Coronavirus: Queen thanks healthcare workers for 'selfless dedication' in 'testing times'

In a statement released on Tuesday morning, Her Majesty said: "On the occasion of World Health Day, I want to thank all those working in the healthcare profession for your selfless commitment and diligence as you undertake vitally important roles to protect and improve the health and well-being of people across the commonwealth, and around the world.

"In testing times, we often observe that the best of human spirit comes to the fore; the dedication to service of countless nurses, midwives and other healthcare workers, in these most challenging of circumstances, is an example to us all.

"My family and I send our enduring appreciation and good wishes."

Lovely words from Her Majesty.

Very much echoing the Be Kind vibe from her address to the nation IMO.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have today been criticised after revealing some of the details of their plans to launch a new not-for-profit foundation, with one royal watcher describing it as 'the worst possible timing'.

The couple last night said they 'look forward' to getting started with the foundation, named Archewell, which will replace their Sussex Royal brand.

But royal biographer Phil Dampier has described the reveal of the details, which came as Prime Minister Boris Johnson was moved into intensive care with coronavirus, as 'appalling timing'.

The details were revealed after the Telegraph uncovered that The Sussexes had filed paperwork to trademark Archewell in the United States last month.

Bbm: it’s kind of a theme.

For Harry, who has not had that much press, and even great press before getting married, it must feel strange to be QE2’s beloved grandson, having sentiments like “we were so moved” by Her Majesty’s message plastered all over the press...

These grand public announcements are not necessary in families. And for Harry, it just seems to highlight the distance, and the disconnect. I imagine he might be feeling quite torn about being so far away from his family, and country right now. I know I would.

To announce all these future machinations at this moment is in really poor taste. How about set it up, get funding for something, anything, and then make the pitch that you’ve done something? I’m sorry, but Archewell sounds like an insurance or accounting firm. And it’s hard to feel special about the name considering what a sequestered baby Archie is, has always been. Especially from his family.

For not wanting to be hounded by the press, protect one's family, one’s child, all their roads lead in the opposite direction.

And this is my criticism of them. What they say and what they do are opposed, and purposeful.

Royals wish Boris Johnson a 'speedy recovery': | Daily Mail Online

I love this picture. As rumpled as Boris is, he’s got some serious charm by the way Her Majesty is beaming!

—Wishing him a speedy recovery, too.

I believe it was stated that it was a non profit foundation but I'm sure the tabloids will put a spin on it shortly.

Non profits usually pay their CEOs.

Goodwill is a non profit. Their CEO makes almost $750,000 per year. Churches are non profits, they usually pay their pastors. Any non profit has expenses including salaries. Jmo

Non profits also get to deduct "expenses" for fundraising, travel, housing, etc, etc, etc.

And if their board approves it, well then it's all legal.

I am sure Oprah will be associated with it. Their Apple TV mental health series is to be included with this new charity

Private Foundations vs. Public Charities: An Overview

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has allowed for the creation of tax-exempt charitable organizations. These groups manifest in one of two ways: as private foundations or as public charities.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A private foundation is a non-profit charitable entity, which is generally created by a single benefactor, usually an individual or business.
  • A public charity uses publicly-collected funds to directly support its initiatives.
  • The only substantive difference between the two is the manner in which funds are acquired.

Private Foundations vs. Public Charities: What's the Difference?

Both entities I believe are required to be transparent with annual reports.

501c3 are required to have a board. Whereas foundations are under the auspices of an individual, family.

I worked for a non profit that received two major grants “endowments” from foundations, Mellon & James Michener (family foundations). This seed money’s interest provided working operational capital, and the other income was generated through public contributions for the nonprofit mission.

These entities have different tax structures. So, while there’s no direct profit making there are salaries, in kind contributions, there are different tax advantages to each.

It looks like they are setting up a foundation. Will they use their own money as initial seed financing to launch it? There may be a tax advantage to structuring it that way. And it has the prestige of their name.

Wonder if they have consulted Prince Charles who has a ton of experience with successful trusts in the UK.

The article linked above says it's a not-for-profit -- which is different than a non-profit.

For your encouragement (reminds me so much of the tenor of HRH remarks.)

Some raspberry filled would be so nice right now.

Long, long ago I was a kid in Indiana.

My Dad was a small plane pilot.

The Archway Cookie factory outlet was across the taxiway at the Fort Wayne airport.

A brown paper grocery sack of broken cookies was a buck! Seriously!

Yeah, kids always wanted to go if Dad was flying into Fort Wayne. As adults, Sis & I figured that the counter ladies had an airport radio, they never seemed surprised when we walked in.

My Mom would call them & ask for specific cookie types to make a crumb crust.

Gingersnaps for pumpkin chiffon at my house, yep.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled BRF thread!

Archewell sounds like a company that makes orthotic insoles to me.

I suspect they will be getting a salary, travel expenses etc.

In my opinion this is a terrible time to launch a foundation it just doesn’t look good from a public relations perspective. They should have waited.
