I don’t know about Britain but in the USA there are an inordinate number of celebrity gossip news shows. TMZ must have camping rights at LAX.

All of them, potentially. In the US, they can, and do, largely get away with pretty much any nonsense due to extremely broad (overbroad, if you ask me) 1st Amendment protection. Here's a snip from an article about the difference between US and UK libel law:

"I did not live in England, I do not live in England, the book was not published there, so why not come and sue me in the United States?" she asks.

The reason is simple.

"English laws are much more favorable for someone looking to protect their reputation," says Jenny Afia, a lawyer in London who often represents people making libel and privacy claims.

Ehrenfeld's case was an example of "libel tourism," where someone brings a libel claim in a country where he is most likely to win. Often, that country is Great Britain.

"Crooks and brigands from around the world come here to launder their reputations, where they couldn't get exculpation in either their home country or indeed in the United States of America," says Mark Stephens, a London lawyer who often represents media companies in these cases.

In American courts, the burden of proof rests with the person who brings a claim of libel. In British courts, the author or journalist has the burden of proof, and typically loses.

"So you've got the rich and powerful shutting down and chilling speech which is critical of them," says Stephens.

That's very interesting, and explains, for eg, the National Enquirer. But IMO no one takes the NE seriously, or look to it for actual 'news' the way they do the British tabloids.

IMO, while they could potentially be scandal sheets, the news media in the US choose to be much more reticent and respectful about people's personal lives. That includes TMZ, who will try to be first to verify facts, but doesn't invent or feed elaborate soap opera stories like palace feuds. The last story they had about MM was when she and Harry took a private jet in September.

The US press have, for example, been very respectful of Trump's family, however much they criticize him. Melania complains about being 'bullied' for what is really very mild commentary compared with what MM has faced.

The Cambridges today. Wouldn't have thought brown would be so nice on Kate but it really suits her, like the cut of the dress too

that is one of the few dresses I like on her. That is a great color on her

Meghan Markle arrives for first public appearance since ITV documentary as she attends Royal Albert Hall – without Prince Harry – just hours after source close to the couple told how they have 'single-handedly modernised the monarchy'

It's a lovely colour and an interesting choice. Purple is a very regal colour. It doesn't fit so well though. And it seems a bit informal for an evening occasion.

Like the queen, Kate chooses a style which suits her and sticks with it.
She looks great in this style dress and the coat-dress. Perfect.

Prince Charles seems to have gone without Camilla but theres lots of photos of the other European royals in fabulous tiaras (the ettiquette seems to have been long gowns and hats during the day which I think looks rather odd) in Japan for their new Emperor to be enthroned. I think Maxima's evening look is my favourite
See Japanese Emperor Naruhito's Enthronement Ceremony in Photos
This is FASCINATING !

But I really want details and a narrative about the significance of the outfits and the ceremony

This is really a once-in-a-lifetime ceremony. So unusual

One thing - I ‘m struck by how sad the Empress looks. Is is just bad camera angles, or allergies, or sleeplesssness? She looks exhausted.

And I am very embarrassed that the USA sent secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao as the US representative. At least Melania Trump and the Vice President should have attended. This is a real slight to Japan

Yes, I think that’s pretty accurate. Plus, they came down hard with some laws on photographing children without permission. They cannot show their identity.

Still, TMZ will follow, film people being followed even if they have no comment that day... so, there’s an in one’s face aspect.

Daily Mail has a whole U.S. branch. I’m often impressed at their regular reporting, they are there faster with the story than many U.S. papers.

There are some second and third city papers like the NY Post which has a dishy section.

FLOTUS, both recent First Ladies have gotten raked over the coals. You name it, they’ve said it. In fact, Meghan could get some good guidance by watching both First Ladies, their interviews, responses, as to how they handle the brutal press and SM world they endure pretty regularly. —FLOTUS definitely lives in a fish bowl while in the WH.

If I were to define bullying on SM, I’d have to say twitter is where so much happens. In fact I read that Meghan’s sister got banned from twitter.

TMZ did all the stories in her father. Now today it seems the National Enquire has decided to join the fray.

I'm certainly under the impression that the US press make stuff up. I'm not saying the UK press don't, but l think generally there is some element of truth in it.

I'm a bit surprised Meghan is out and about at all given his awful life is for her at the moment. If l had caused such a fracas l would want to hide for a few weeks :D

What Happens When Celebrities Speak Out About mental illness.

More individuals in the spotlight—be it professional athletes, authors, musicians or social influencers—are opening up and disclosing their mental illnesses and experiences with seeking treatment.

We’ve learned that one of the most effective anti-stigma agents is a face-to-face experience with a person’s story of lived experience. And face-to-face is now in the palm of your hand, and accessible at any time.

I agree Twitter can be vile. But then so can Instagram. Both platforms enable anonymity. Hence posters can go to town.

Yes. This is what I was trying to convey. US tabloid journalism may seems more truthy because it's rarely called out -- as it's pointless for the targets to do so. But it's really more fictional for that same reason. In the UK, otoh, it may seem more sensational, but there's usually truth to it because, otherwise, they're subject to expensive lawsuits.

Petty, I know, but it’s hard for me to take any woman who wears hair extensions seriously.

Yes, Patti Duke was courageous, so was Carrie Fisher - Bipolar, substance abuse.

And, First Lady Betty Ford on both breast cancer and substance abuse.

And, Rock Hudson on AIDS.

High profile people can often be the game changers.

All the above people came before social media. With young people today, when I think of fragile, I think of those very young kids, teens, ending their life because of an online SM world that is vicious. The lines are blurred from playground to SM. It is so tragic.

I think we are just as heavily medicated and self medicated here in the USA. Doesn’t matter if you air it all out or are stiff upper lip.

The Queen of Sweden has begun a campaign to try to address online bullying.

So, H&M have some good company in helping to raise awareness especially to this younger generation of kids who do not know life without social media.

BBM: Both Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Obama have been on the receiving end of some abhorrent press and social media commentary, and have dealt with it admirably. They are a prime example of people construing certain commentary as "bullying" when it is aimed at somebody they like and "fair criticism" when the same behaviour is directed at somebody they don't.

It sure did not seem Meghan and Harry were fragile in Africa. I doubt if William gave a comment on Harry.

When media does any kind of interview, miles of interview are cut and spliced. The media is trying to make a good show.

Harry and Meghan are engaging as people, to me.

Camilla, Charles, Kate and William have all adjusted to the media in a slower fashion. Harry and Meghan were right into the onslaught of social media.

I imagine they think of themselves as nice people who do no harm to anyone. Rather they want to do positive things.

The ugliness must be unreal.

I would find it unusual if the Queen and Charles did not know all about the program. I doubt If Harry would do anything to upset his beloved grandmother
