Queen Elizabeth II news: Why did the Queen not stay with Prince Philip in London?

THE QUEEN travelled to Sandringham for her Christmas break on Friday on the same day Prince Philip was admitted to hospital in London.

Queen Elizabeth II arrived at Sandringham today after putting off her Christmas break following the general election. After attending the State Opening of Parliament on Thursday the Queen was finally free to take her annual train journey from King’s Cross to King’s Lynn, Norfolk today.

Will we see Prince Philip on Christmas Day?
While the royal family traditionally come together for a church service in Sandringham on Christmas Day, the Duke has not been present since 2017.

If he leaves hospital in time for Wednesday it seems very unlikely Philip will attend this year’s church service
. :(
Express

I'm not sure what to make of this?

Surely if it was anything serious or of some concern I'd think HM would want to be with him no matter what? o_O
I mean at 97 every minor health scare is potentially very serious thou?
Maybe it is serious & 'they' are preparing HM, making sure she's at home safely with the rest of the family, well away from public view...:(

Or hopefully, Philip's just so sick of the all the ongoing shenanigans he wants to nothing to do with the 'Royal Family Christmas at Sandringham' & is so fed up of the whole the lots of 'em he's planned his own 'Great Escape' ;)

I really couldn't wrap my head around this either. Prince Philip is in the hospital and the Queen just carries on with her luncheons?

I guess that the royals are different. It wouldn't matter to me what my husband was in the hospital for, flu, broken toe, bee sting...whatever. I would be there with him.

This comes off as incredibly cold to me. Stiff upper lip? Carry on? And how would people react if Meghan did the same thing if Prince Harry was in the hospital?

Prince Philip in hospital as Queen travels to Sandringham for Christmas

The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to hospital with a pre-existing condition, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

In a statement, the palace said: "The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition. The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor."

It is understood the Duke, 98, has been under the weather for some time and concerns were raised when he developed a bad cold in recent weeks.

He is expected to remain at the private hospital in Marylebone for a few days. He was not taken by ambulance and it was a planned admission.

It was reported last night that he was brought to London from Sandringham by helicopter before being driven to the hospital in Marylebone. The Daily Telegraph understands he walked in unaided. o_O

...By the time she [HM] arrived on the estate, the Duke had already left for hospital, which sources suggested meant there was "no cause for alarm" over his health.

The Duke's health troubles: From bladder infections to blocked arteries

Prince Philip has been admitted to hospital with various ailments over the years including bladder infections, a blocked coronary artery and for abdominal surgery.

His last scrape came in January when he was involved in a car crash when the Land Rover Freelander he was driving flipped over

In April this year, he was under the noses of medics again when he underwent a hip operation.

He was admitted early - once again to the private King Edward VII hospital - and the Duke of Edinburgh spent 11 days there before being discharged...

The Telegraph

I know some of ^ is repeated from previously posted articles, this is the 'latest' news report at the moment so I've posted all main points just in case any were missed...:p

;) RUMOUR: I'm sure I read he's had a "minor fall", that along with him reportedly having a bad cold/flu recently, it was felt best to have him checked over at the hospital - reiterating it's precautionary, no serious heath issues etc.
It's not mentioned in this article so I'm gonna say it was a premium/subscription?? So ATM this is hearsay!

I don't remember seeing George VI on any coins in circulation, thou I guess wasn't really looking back then :D

What do u mean "older" people?? 'Bob' is still used up 'ere, thou nowadays it's rarely anything other than '10-Bob' (That's £1 to all you non-elderly Brits & non-Brits;) )

Ohh, the most I've heard is five bob (50p), but I also know it was used as "five bob note" .... it's always been a coin since I remember.

I got the coins a little bit wrong, it was the five pence that was the shilling, and the 10 pence was 2 shillings or a florin (though I don't remember anyone using the term florin?)

I'm struggling to find good photos of the shilling/2shilling coins that were in circulation and used as 5pence and 10pence, but here's the Queen side of a 2 shilling with the really young Queen image on it.

After decimalisation this was used as a ten pence coin, but it was originally the florin/2 shilling piece

I think I was born a year or two after decimalisation....I never learned all the £sd (pounds, shillings, and pence) stuff. I just remember the few coins that I saw in circulation, plus some old pennies, ha'pennies, and sixpences from pre-decimalisation.

I know it is difficult to understand but I have got the impression over the years that Prince Philip is very strong-willed about what he wants and doesn’t like any fuss. When I’m frequently in the hospital my family is banned from seeing me apart from my parents as I don’t like people seeing me sick. I’m sure if the situation was life threatening and he did not have long Her Majesty and his children would be with him.

The Queen would probably also be in close contact with the Duke's doctors so that even if he said "don't worry you silly woman, no need for you to stay in London!" she'd be able to get the doctors' opinions on how serious it really is. I guess it's not far by helicopter if he did (God forbid) take a turn for the worse.

Very well, who knows, maybe the coot planned this event to just get out of the whole mess at Sandringham. I don't blame him a bit. He can hang out with young nurses. Probably much more his cup of tea.

He spends his time at his estate so they are not together anyway. If it is no big deal then it is no different than the distance they already have

Im fairly sure the same thing happened in 2018 or 17, right before Christmas. I suspect my husband is tempted to pull a similar stunt to get out of present wrapping!

History may be kind to you, but not the wind, the sun, and the cold! It’s one thing to keep a stiff upper lip. It’s quite another when your lips are dry and sore. No one can think clearly or sensibly about this vast and burning topic, so remember the inspiring words of Sir Winston Churchill, and never surrender! :p

More about Prince Philip's domicile at Sandringham:

Spartan cottage and visits from loyal friend Penny

By Jo Macfarlane

For all the grand Royal palaces at his disposal, it is a rather more modest address which Prince Philip chooses to call home.

Wood Farm, an unassuming cottage on the edge of the Sandringham Estate close to the Norfolk coastline, is where the Duke has been whiling away his days since retiring from official public life in August 2017.

The red-brick, five-bedroom property with its spartan furnishings and cosy open fires has for years been a bolthole from stuffy palace formality.

Royal observers note that the Queen and Philip have been able to feel – and, indeed, behave – like normal people while staying at Wood Farm rather than in 'the big house' a few miles away across the estate.

While the Queen continues to carry out official duties around the country, Prince Philip spends his days in Norfolk reading history books and biographies – he is said to regard novels with 'suspicion' – painting watercolours and entertaining friends and family who arrive by train from London.

His most recent visitors were Prince Charles, Prince Edward and Edward's son, 12-year-old James. The Queen stays occasionally, although they are said to speak on the phone every day. Philip's most regular visitor is one who also shares his greatest and most perilous passion – carriage riding.

Penny Brabourne, 66, the estranged wife of Earl Mountbatten, is a long-time friend and confidante of the Duke. The pair also share an appreciation for the Mountbatten family's Broadlands home, which Penny is running due to her husband's ill-health.

Carriage riding involves sitting on a vehicle being pulled by horses and, while it may sound sedate, it is done at speed and requires considerable nerve and skill.

Royal biographer Hugo Vickers said: 'Prince Philip and Penny have been doing this together for years as a mutual interest.

'He absolutely loves it and will do it every day, including Sundays. He took it up when he was forced to give up polo in 1971 due to an arthritic wrist.

'He terrified his guests. Once, he took someone on his carriage and told him, 'Horses get used to the way they normally go and usually they'd turn right here. I'm going to make them turn left – and they won't like it.'

Wood Farm, an cottage on the edge of the Sandringham Estate close to the Norfolk coastline, is where the Duke has been whiling away his days

'He was right. The guest was thrown from the carriage, while Prince Philip was thrown the other way. After they were rescued and safely in the back of a Land Rover, the Duke simply turned to him and quipped, 'See what I mean?'

'I've seen him do it and it looks terrifying but his former private secretary says it's relaxation for him.

'If you're doing it at speed and going around obstacles, you have to concentrate so hard you don't have time to think about anything else. That's the point of it for him, I think.'

Penny and the Duke 'get on very well together', he added.

'I've seen them all together – the Queen, Prince Philip and Penny – at Windsor and she stays at the castle. They spend a lot of time in each other's company.'

Wood Farm was once the home of the so-called Lost Prince – Prince John, the youngest son of George V and Queen Mary.

His tragic story was turned into an Emmy award-winning 2003 BBC drama.

The Prince, who had epilepsy and learning difficulties, was sent to live in the cottage with his nanny to shield him from the public gaze, but he regularly saw his grandmother, Queen Alexandra, who was living at Sandringham. He died in 1919 aged just 13.

Wood Farm had been occupied by a tenant until it was turned back into a Royal residence.

Mr Vickers added: 'Wood Farm is more practical than opening up Sandringham. It's not tiny, but it's a normal house that anyone could live in. It's very un-Royal.'

Just, perhaps, the way the Duke likes it.

Kate Middleton and Prince William expected to make 'big announcement' over Christmas

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE are expected to make a “big announcement” over the next week, after a briefing by Kensington Palace confirmed there would be a festive surprise from the couple.
