At the point in the interview when the photographer was asked if H and M could have learned from King Edward VIII’s abdication, I was quite struck by one comment he made to the effect that the mistake H and M are making is to believe that their feelings matter more than the monarchy...and they don’t actually, he said.
Kind of a “suck it up buttercup” remark that saddens me. The photographer earlier compared their lives to a gilded cage. The surroundings may be great, but it’s still a cage IMO. Although Harry is a Royal by birth with no choice (as Phillip, Diana, Camilla, Catherine and Meghan had), he has carried out his responsibilities admirably. He is still willing to do so in a lesser role, but not at the cost of his own health and that of his wife and child. I believe these feelings do matter more than the monarchy or any other institution. He isn’t leaving his responsibilities as a member of the RF. He’s just stepping back a bit. I think he and the monarchy will be the better for it.
