At their schools, aren't HRH George & HRH Charlotte known as Cambridge, indicating this child will use (be styled?) Sussex?

The Royal Baby’s official name and the day to day name he will use will be totally different. You’re correct Sussex is likely going to be his surname at school. Can you imagine going to go school with the surname Mountbatten-Windsor? It is so complicated and confusing.

My thoughts on the baby’s name...

I think the middle names will be some combination of - Philip, Charles, Spencer, Henry, Alexander, and Albert.

First names...

Arthur - possibly, will the fact that Pippa Middleton’s son is named Arthur make a difference?

Albert - possibly, but I’m really not a fan of this name and hope they don’t use it.

Alexander - possibly, but George Clooney has been listed as a potential Godparent and his son is named Alexander - hmm.

James - don’t see it. Prince Edward’s son is named James.

Edward - don’t see it - Prince Edward is alive and thriving.

Philip - possibly. Traditionally the Royal Family does not give a first name that is the first name of another living relative, but Prince Philip is fairly old.

Spencer - Nope. Not as the first name. I see this as the last middle name of the baby. JMO

Charles - Nope, it will be a middle name. MOO

Oliver - possibly, I really like this name. It sounds regal and also is a nod to Oliver Tambo (look him up).

Christian - possibly, it is a Royal Family name and underused.

Nicholas - possibly, it is a name from Prince Philip’s Family.

Frederick - possibly, it is both an underused Royal Family name and a possible nod to Frederick Douglas (look him up).

Malcolm - a nod to Malcolm X?

Stephen - an underused Royal Family name

I like the spelling for Steve as Stephen. My first love of my life was Stephen.

That’s a good question, I assumed the same as Steven, but then I’m in the US.

So much joy and excitement with this story today. I adored Harry's interview. My paramedic partner at work who never cares for any of the gossip that I enjoy was the one who messaged me at 8am telling me she was in labor. I was asleep after working all night. I thought it was adorable that he was the one who messaged me cuz he even seemed excited. Probably excited cuz I will shut up about it now, but who knows. Lol on a website such as websleuths, having these joyous discussions is so heartwarming. That royal baby was needed more than they will know

I worked with a lady whose son was name Stephen and she pronounced it as Steph-en. I also worked with a lady whose daughter was Marcia and instead of pronouncing the name like Marsha, she pronounced it as Mar-ci-a.

I do think Charles, Spencer and Philip will be in the name some place.
Why do they have so many middle names???

I would question this. The way that the labour announcement had the ending of standby for a further announcement makes me think they already knew and were giving media a chance to get in place for Harry to go out with the birth announcement.

I also feel that Harry doing that personal announcement to the cameras was a lovely touch and I think the tabloids should feel rotten for all the nasty things they have said and implied. Harry was very gracious considering the media behaviour over the last months with their demands that the birth be announced pronto when baby wasn't even here!

Yeah the U.K is 6 hours ahead of Central Time it is 4am here. I would expect an announcement from noon onwards U.K time on Wednesday. It might be earlier but the time should be announced tomorrow evening so please check in here tomorrow when you can to find out the time.

I’m wondering if we will find out his name at the same time we see him or if it will be officially announced with his title beforehand what do you all think?

I sure hope we find out the baby's name. Picking a name for a child is so hard, I cannot imagine picking a Royal baby name.

I think the child's surname is Wales. Harry was known as Henry Wales in the army, so I think that's the family name.

Of course the real surname is Saxe-Coburg Gotha but that was changed during WW1.

Harry and William were known as Wales but that was because their father was Prince of Wales. William's children go by William's dukedom of Cambridge. So that might mean Harry's son would use Sussex as a surname at school. It's not the same as our surnames, it just represents whose child they are. Andrew's daughters used York as their surname. Presumably Edward's children use Wessex. If a daughter were to marry then her children would get their father's surname, so if Eugenie and Jack have a child, as Jack doesn't have a title their chldren would take the surname of their father.

The current royal house is the House of Windsor. This is like the house of Plantagenet or Tudor. Queen Victoria was of the House of Hanover but married Albert of the House of Save Coburg Gotha. That was changed to the more English-sounding Windsor due to the first world war. Queen Elizabeth is of this line, but she and Margaret would probably have been York when they were children if they needed to use surnames?

So Elizabeth married Philip who was of Greek royalty and didn't have a surname, but he was of the House of Battenburg. That was anglicized to Mountbatten by Philip's uncle and is the surname Philip used when he became a British citizen. So by the normal way of things the marriage of the queen would make a new House of Mountbatten, but that didn't happen. Instead the Queen retained the House name of Windsor and there were rules put into place to say which of Elizabeth and Philip's descendants would be surnamed the compound Mountbatten-Windsor....unfortunately I have no idea what that rule is. A daughter would surely be Lady xyz Mountbatten-Windsor of Sussex? So therefore she would still use Sussex as a surname at school?

If Harry and Meghan's son is made Earl of Dumbarton, then what would that make him? Lord xyz Mountbatten-Windsor, the Earl of Dumbarton. But would he use Dumbarton or Sussex for his school surname?
