She wore jewelry that made the figure go high, not the dress

The jewellery was £139,000, so the dress was about £1000 (less if you're taking shoes and bag into consideration). Bargain :p

Well I'm going out on a limb for this & I might never post again: there's a hole in the ozone layer, there are children who go to bed hungry at night, there is human trafficking of babies & children.

I cannot approve of clothing worn by people who should set a more proper example. When you wear a 6 figure dress: if it's given to you by the designer--acknowledge it. Otherwise whatever you say, how ever you feel about the very real horrors occurring in the world: it's hollow and has no meaning.

Even though it was the jewelry, not the dress, that was six figures, I get your point, Tony. Personally, even if I had that kind of money I couldn’t spend it on that bracelet. I guess someone could argue that the money spent on the bracelet wouldn’t make a dent in solving the problems you mention. True, but it might make some lives easier. I might have advised Meghan not to buy it or wear it, given her history of activism and the contrasting symbolism of the extravagant bracelet.

On the other hand, the British monarchy and its jewelry, etc isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Their role is complex and debated. Much of the jewelry has been “in the family” for years, has some historic value and can’t really be sold, so it might as well be worn. Does the service and support the Royal Family provides to worthy causes become a counterweight to the gems and other symbols of the monarchy? I think we could discuss that for a long time without getting anywhere. I do think it’s noteworthy that when Meghan wore the beautiful black velvet dress to an event recently, she wore metal jewelry made by indigenous people IIRC, rather than gems.

This is a “fluffy” thread, a respite from the other heavy, horrible threads and even world events. So I set aside my discomfort with the showy display of wealth and allow myself a little enjoyable distraction without thinking too deeply about the valid points you make. But I do get where you’re coming from.

It’s not a lot of money when you think of how many millions of pounds the Royals jewellery is worth. Even Princess Diana’s engagement ring is considered priceless due to its significance.

I think they do try to show some restraint which is why dresses from the past are being worn again.

Duchesses BOTH delve into their wardrobes and recycle dresses for the Queen's Christmas lunch - with Kate choosing a frock she first wore SEVEN years ago

Meghan and Kate both recycle dresses for the Queen's Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace | Daily Mail Online

Today’s Christmas lunch fashion.

I’m all for this epic fashion “recycling” competition! The world needs something lighthearted. I’d love to see them in ratty sweatpants.

I am not a fan of Me-Again, but Kate has grown on me over the years. I believe she has found more confidence in her role recently. Initially I thought Meghan was refreshing, now all I see is ego flaring.

I love the outfits that Kate wears. Her clothes are very classic and she always looks well put together.
I can remember saying to my daughter quite a while ago how much I love the way she dresses.

Samantha is in the press again begging Meg to heal the rift with her father as he could drop dead any moment. She has even posted photos of the Christmas card she sent such is the desperation for publicity.

Fun fashion article. What are your favourite looks? I think the Oscar De La Renta dress is the nicest.

Thanks for sharing that article. I hadn't seen the Burberry tartan coat previously (#7). High 5!

OT - I don't want to get too busy tomorrow and forget to wish everyone on the Royals forum a very Merry Christmas. As dear Lilibet said so eloquently in her above response to Tony1902, this is a "fluffy" thread that provides a much needed respite from the many sad and sordid discussions that are commonplace on Websleuths. I check the Royals forum several times daily and enjoy everyone's contributions and media links. I hope all of you have a lovely Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with loved ones.

Yes Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year to all. It is a fun thread, especially the Royal Wedding in real time. Next big event with be the Royal Birth! As time gets closer we will have to have a guessing pool. I know a few of us posted such right after the announcement. I don't even remember my guess but surely will change it as time gets closer.

Queen to urge Britain to put aside its 'deeply held differences' in last Christmas speech before Brexit

“Even with the most deeply held differences, treating the other person with respect and as a fellow human being is always a good first step towards greater understanding,” she will say.

As head of state, the Queen remains publicly neutral on political matters.

Do they show Her Majesty The Queen’s speech in the States and around the world after it has been broadcast in the U.K? I imagine it will likely be on YouTube.
