The Duggar Family: 18 Kids & Counting

  • #401
I'm sure i'll be flamed but i sincerely believe that with children, its quality that counts. Not quantity. I do not believe the Duggar family could possibly give their children what they really need to be successful in life and additionally, I think their motives for having this many children are selfish.

I think it's great that the Duggars are able to give their large quantity family all the quality homelife and love they can. And if one wanted to be selfish they would not be giving up so much of themselves to support such a large family, so selfishness I do not see.

Are you kidding? Yea, because homeschooling is much easier! lmao
I'm fairly shocked at how judgemental this thread is. No way I could have that many children, but they make it work. The kids are well behaved, the parents aren't divorced and the kids get attention ALL DAY from their parents. How many of you get off work, pick up your kids, eat dinner and send them straight to bed? How much time DO YOU really spend with your children. How many of you are receiving public assistance in some way (healthcare, cash, food)? They provide for themselves. And those that bash homeschooling obviously know nothing about it. Just because you saw ONE homeschool family that you thought was odd, doesn't make them all odd.

I find this post to be very offensive. The fact that you begin your post by claiming that this thread is "judgemental" makes it even more offensive. That you accuse posters of receiving public assistance makes it even more offensive. I believe that there are pros and cons of both homeschooling and public schooling. No one should bash you for your belief that homeschooling is better and you definately shouldn't bash anyone else for sending their children to mainstream public schools.

I just answered my own question. It's called Duggar Family Album. Looks like clips from old shows as well as an update at the end and the birth of the new girlie!!

I actually love this family now, after seeing the documentaries about them. OK.. so they have WAY too many kids for this day & age, when the world is dealing with severe population problems that will probably end up being the death of us. And I'm not a fan of religion. HOWEVER.... the fact is.. they are truly an amazing family and they work incredibly hard and are obviously devoted to raising healthy, happy kids. You take a look at the kids and they all seem so incredibly well-adjusted.. which seems to be an ever more rare thing with American youth today....! And I just love how they are all so frugal, not so materialistic.. and are always finding ways to save money... they seem like "can do" people.. and did you see how they made sure every kid was involved, somehow, with the building of that house? They gave everyone, even the littlest one, a job to do. That was pretty cool. I think many parents today could take some lessons from them. I think of the parents that have 1 or 2 kids and complain all the time about how hard it is.. (and I realize,, sometimes it really IS hard, esp if you're a single parent).. but then I think of this couple with 16...?? or is it 17 now...? GEEZ...!! They also seem like (from what I can tell) good, sincere people.. who have their priorities in life straight. Then again, I don't know if they suport the bombing of abortion clinics and things like that.... but, I'm just going by what the films showed. If only we could let parents like these have as many kids as they want.. and sterilize all the crack mothers, abusers, and other assorted psyhos out there. The world might be a better place.

My only problem with families this size is that it forces the older kids to act more like parents and less like kids. Instead of having the life of a normal teen, they're babysitting their little brothers and sisters.

True... but then again, it's still a lot better life than many teens have.. to be with a loving family and socializing with your siblings. Plus, if they have this kind of responsbility, it can help keep them out of trouble. I truly believe that the 'idle hands are the devil's workshop' holds true with many American kids today.. and I think we should bring back child labor (to some degree). It's clear that many of the problems that Western young people have is that they have too much idle time, too much material 'stuff', no responsiblity, nothing to do except go hang out at the mall, and even more today-- play violent video games, watch TV, texting their friends, chatting about nothing on MySpace, etc.
Working on the family farm or in the family business used to keep a lot of kids busy, taught them the value of work... and now so many of these have gone kaput. Now even rural kids often have little to do, so they get a job at Wal-Mart (well at least they are working) or get involved with drugs.
Are we really better off now....? I think work (like babysitting your siblings) gives structure, discipline and responsbility to their lives... and also valuable socialization and child-rearing skills.. and a lot of kids don't have this chance. I can't say for sure but it seems like the Duggars would make sure that their teenage kids are able to mingle with other kids their age (structured, of course.. not hanging out with boys in the Dairy Queen parking lot.. LOL), go to teen events, etc.

I can absolutely see this side of it. There are pros and cons to every situation. There's no doubt that these parents love each and every one of their children and so long as they're able to provide for them without having to receive financial aid from the government, then I have absolutely no problems whatsoever!!!

My mom was one of 21 kids and my grandparents would have had more, but the doctor advised against it. I think I have pictures from an old newspaper article about them posted in the Genealogy forum.

I just love this family and when I watch them on television I am just amazed. They live debt free and devote their life to their children. All of their kids seem to be well adjusted, happy, respectful people. That is alot more than I can say for the majority of children I see today.

I do not know how they do it. Financialy, physically and mentally. Whew they are better thanme, I can barely keep it together with 2!

I don't get the mother home schooling all those kids. All she has is a high school education. But I guess to each his own.

I think the thing that bothers me with huge families like this is that the older kids aren't given a choice on whether to help with siblings or not. It's expected. Kids need to have the choice to be kids. They also need to have friends and socialize outside the family.

JMO of course. ;)

My husband is 1 of 17....he is the 6th oldest, all by the same parents. Crazy huh? Mom started at 15 and had her last at 41...all single births.

With 17 grown kids and 40 something grandkids she still has time to volunteer to help the less fortunate. She won a prestigous award 2 years ago for all her volunteer work called the Hon Kachina. Here she is:
