It is OK everywhere. An estranged wife is a wife who has separated from her husband (but not divorced). A common law wife is any woman living with a man as a couple (they are not married).

So, if a guy separated from his wife (who is now estranged) and then shacks up with his new girl friend (who is now his common law wife), that is what you have.

A common law spouse is one you live with, but do not have a marriage contract with.

I thought there are certain legal aspect to being "common law" which include a period of time spent living together. Here is a texas link.
I also read on wikki one must not already be married,as that would prevent them from being able to marry.

I think it is interesting that the world is as small as it seems. I think he did kill 2 someones already. How did he know he would be able to actualy murdeer someone ?

I do not think I am to a point where I think he did anthing to Hailey but I am at a point to where I think it would be silly not to question if he could be involved.

He is known to Clints current girlfriends family. (per post here)
He has murdered people.(media link.
He enlisted a g/f help to murder family member and innocent person.(per posted media links)
He is abusive.( per post here)
He has threated people in clints gfs family and caused them harm and fear. Hailey was arround this family
He has children who Hailey might know. (information from this thread and MIGHT know is an assumption as it is PTS sisters kids I think it is a fair one )
He may have a grudge agaisnt anyone who is related to his ex because his kids. I am assuming he likes to be in control like most abuser.

So I have not been able to say he isnt involved, because I think he looks like an interesting suspect.

How many people can one know that commits abductions?

:goodpost:

I think that anything in Hailey's case is within the realm of possibility. There was too much drama surrounding Billy and CD and those they were associated with.

At least the wife, not the commonlaw wife, can move on and divorce now. Her abusive ex is not going anywhere.

I think we have to disagree there. As someone who has been in a abused marriage to me Melissa was also a victim. Regarding your remark that she " Knew people who could do things" if thats the case its curious why her own sister lived in fear for so many years. I agree that its something for Le to determine whether or not Carl had anything to do with Hailey going missing which is why the link was reported at the time.

BBM I am aware of abusive marriages, spent time in the hospital and then over 6 months in a DV shelter recouperating from my injuries. For Melissa, it is now a moot point; her 'husband' isn't going anywhere and she is free to divorce him and move on. If she has financial difficulties, she can receive help from the DV system. There are lawyers who do pro-bono work. I hope she does well with her new life. As for Hailey, even more, I wish she were able to move on in her life...Hailey deserved so much better than the dysfunctional family she was born into. Hailey was given no choices.

Perhaps you can pass this info along to Melissa: 1-800-799-SAFE [7233] they can help her with finding a local contact. thehotline.org

I would have to look it up but I don't think Texas even recognizes common law marriage anymore, but even if they did, they would not consider this legal because he was still married to the other woman. So no matter how long he and the girlfriend were living together, she is not his wife in any shape or form and would not be entitled to any of his assets.

I doubt seriously this has any connection to Hailey. This Harkey guy just wanted his stepmother's money and the grandson saw a way to make a little money himself. What would he have gained by killing Hailey?

Possible, but not very probable, IMO.

Just saw your link, thanks. I guess it is recognized but since he was still legally married to his wife, I don't believe the courts would recognize this as a marriage.
