They seem to have escaped my attention, somehow; pace the NYT headline, they operated in a time when the term 'serial killers' (see 'murder series') did not yet exist.

Serial Killer Takes His Own Life
On Aug. 23, 1971, the body of Leeora Rose Looney, 20, of Thornton CO, was discovered in a field in Weld County just south of the Wyoming state line.
Looney was kidnapped from a Mister Donut shop on West Colfax Avenue in Lakewood CO by Sherman McCrary and his son-in-law, Carl Taylor. The McCrary-Taylor clan, which comprised three generations in all, were Texas carnival folk who preceded Ted Bundy as the first coast-to-coast serial killers.
Looney was the second of at least 22 victims killed in nine different states during the McCrary-Taylor clan's killing spree in 1971 and 1972. When her body was discovered, there was evidence she was raped and strangled before she was shot to death with one bullet to the back and two to the head.
The McCrary-Taylor family was finally arrested in November 1972 following a botched grocery store robbery in Santa Barbara, CA. McCrary and Taylor were indicted by a Colorado statewide grand jury and extradited to the state to stand trial.

Five members of a family of wanderers were questioned today by policemen seeking links with a crosscountry series of murders and robberies.
“The case involves multiple homicides and robberies and kidnappings in numerous Southwestern states,” said Police Capt. Charles Thompson.
Earlier, investigators had mentioned 22 murders, but Captain Thompson told newsmen, “We don't know the number that might be involved. We're concentrating on just five.”
