The Talent show

  • #281
Now that it has been confirmed I am wondering if this shy child had reservations about performing in the talent show. Obviously he never mentioned it to his father. I have wondered about what looks like a drain pipe in the canal next to the parking lot, it looks on google like it runs under skyline dr. At least it looked that way on google earth. Would a shy child hide in a place like that, so deep he wouldn't be discovered?

Yesterday on KOIN there was an article about the 9 year old that was supposed to be performing with Kyron in the talent show. The article stated that he was called to testify before the GJ. I can't find this article now and the link I saved for it doesn't pull it up this morning. Does anyone have this link or any ideas on why it "disappeared"? TIA

I cannot answer, but I have noticed a lot of articles have disappeared. The ones I was looking for were older though.

Beyond Belief,

The drain pipe is a good question. I would hope LE would look through there.

Have we ever gotten the talent show really "confirmed" yet though?

I'm going to try to find the drainage pipe in the school photos we have here.

The 9 yo who was to perform with Kyron in the talent show testified he never saw Kyron that day. They were to practice at the 10:30 recess. Was Kyron dreading the talent show and decided to skip?

This was about thier school activities 2009 and about the talentshow...

Any Skyline student can sign up to share their talent during this entire week. Talent Show previews will be held in the gym during recess on Thursday and Friday. June 5th is the day of the talent show. Acts must sign up and have their act approved during the previews in order to perform in the show. We welcome any and all talents that are appropriate for K-8th grade students. Acts will be limited to 2 minutes or less in order to make sure we get through the talent show in a reasonable amount of time.

Good catch, Bean. This is hard to verify because the old handbook is poof. But if this was not a typo (and it doesn't seem to be based on the practices mentioned on Thursday and Friday), then Kyron would not have been in the talent show anyway because he would have been with DY and TY.

The link that gliving provided is giving information about last year's talent show (2009). Friday, June 5, 2009, was the talent show date last year, and this year it was Friday, June 4, 2010. But the information regarding what the children did to sign up and prepare for the talent show would likely be very similar from year to year.

Am I the only one who finds it surprising that Kyron was in a talent show? His parents keep describing how quiet and timid he was. I don't get the impression he was a "ham". He just doesn't strike me as the type of kid who would volunteer for a talent show. He strikes me as the type of kid who would have a great time watching a talent show.

Me too KariKae. I don't think Kyron would have enjoyed the talent show. I remember hating to get on stage. Hated it!

I was trying to find a link where Desiree and Kaine describe Kyron's shyness. I'm working an a new theory about his absence and the talent show.

I suppose it's possible Kyron decided to "skip" because of the talent show, but imo, very unlikely.

How many children that age skip school?
Was Kyron the type to do something like that?

Impo, a sheltered seven year old is highly unlikely to "play hooky" unless an adult he trusted suggested it and facilitated it.

Could he have wandered off alone because he didn't want to be in the show? Sure, anything's possible. But is it probable?

"Is it probable?"

Actually I think it's more probable than some of the other theories I've read. :)

He's described by family and friends as shy and timid. He's younger than most of his classmates, starting school a year early. We simply don't know if stage fright was more of a concern to him than the consequences of skipping school.

Kyron supposedly told his SM that he was going to his classroom. But, he was seen in the gym with his friends, and his SM was not there... He was then seen last,by another child, at around or just after 9 ;00 am around the front entrance to the school... As per LE. So, we can see he may not have always done what he was supposed to,or what he said he would do... It so comes with 7 year old boy territory .... IMO

I don't think Kyron was scheduled to be in the talent show. I just haven't seen anything that convinces me he was, and that he didn't mention it to Kaine that morning (nor Kaine to him), as excited as he gets about all things school related according to Kaine, convinces me more that he was not scheduled for the talent show.

All I've seen is a couple or three parents of other students claiming that Kyron was supposed to be in the talent show. That's not enough for me.

I think Kyron wandering out of the school on his own is a contender for what may have happened to him. I haven't seen anything that convinces me he's shy at school. I think he's more likely social and energetic, as Capt Gates said. I think wandering out with the flower bed kids, for example, is a contender.

... snip...I think wandering out with the flower bed kids, for example, is a contender.

And not wandering back in...I wonder how many groups of kids actually went out during the course of the morning. GK only mentions having seen one group, and since he left before 9, he probably would have seen only the initial group.

I don't know if Kyron was to be in the show or not. I was a shy kid myself, and never in a hundred years would I have participated in a talent show, unless I was forced to, as something the entire class would take part in, as a group.

Now, as for seeing Kyron in the video not looking shy at a past performance, I was just like that myself. I was literally the shortest kid in class, and was ALWAYS stuck front and center, much to my horror. There was nothing I could do, and I always found it unfair. I don't think I ever ONCE stood up with my classmates and "really" sang over the years. I was a big lip syncer. I was too scared to do otherwise. Now I think I was kind of lame, but back then, I would have died if somebody could pick my voice out from my classmates, or if everyone suddenly stopped singing and I accidentally carried on for a couple seconds - or even, god forbid, the kids standing on either side of me could hear me, as I could always hear them, being so near.

Also, I dislike(d) my mom greatly. She causes me embarrassment. We simply do not get along. There are events at school that I would never mention, just to keep her from showing up. Even now, with my own son, I keep things from her. She wanted to go to his kindergarten concert last year, and I just sort of conveniently forgot to give her the date. I know this sounds awful of me, but please dont judge, as you dont know how she is, and I am just giving this as an example.

Perhaps Kyron didn't want Terri there, and so he didnt mention the talent show. I dont think this would have extended to Kaine, but of course, Kyron must have been smart enough to know that he couldnt tell his father without Terri knowing too. This scenario could point to problems at home with Terri, and some of the things TY has said about Kyron's recent relationship with his SM.

I also remember deliberately keeping my baseball games from my dad. I felt bad about this, as I pretty much adored him. But my parents were divorced, and they argued often over custody issues and child support and other things. My mom was my baseball coach (she inserted herself into EVERYthing in my life.) and I just wasn't keen on the idea of them being near each other in front of all my friends.

I post all of this just to try to give you guys an idea that it might not be so uncommon or far fetched for the parents not to know about something - Kyron was at an age where he could effectively keep secrets if he wanted to.

personally, I lean more towards the talent show not being a huge deal and perhaps a lot of parents didnt go to that sort of thing. But I dont think it would be too far out for the parents not to know about it, either way.

Desiree and Kaine on the talent show

Desiree: There's been some rumor that he was supposed to be in a talent show. I don't really know if that's credible.

Kaine: Yeah. We, we were, we didn't have any information that led us to believe that initially, but (shakes head negatively) we've heard some things since then, so we're not certain.

This is not a child who was shy at school. This is not a child who would not tell Kaine and Terri (and Desiree if he talked to her on the phone) that there was to be a talent show, and to want to be in it.

@ 10:10 Kaine (smiling throughout):

He's very enthusiastic about school. He was really excited about the science fair.

He loves, he loves going to Skyline, just going there, doing things with his friends, the different projects, the field trips, the exercises in class, just is always enthusiastic about going to school, riding the bus - one of his favorite things to do of the day.

So yeah, tons of enthusiasm, just really excited about all the things related to school and the projects and everything.

I think Kyron told Kaine and Terri and possibly Desiree about the talent show, and a collective decision was made that he would not be in it. Perhaps because of the tree frog project, it was decided there was not enough time to practice, prepare, and make a costume, and the tree frog project was given priority because it was academic.

I think it is more likely that after having been told he couldn't be in the talent show, that Kyron decided himself he wanted to, because of his enthusiasm for all things school-related, and told other children he was going to.

I wonder if Kyron ever told Terri that he didn't want her at certain events or even blurted out, "I hate you!", as kids sometimes will do? Perhaps he blamed her for sending J away?

8 a.m. Skyline Elementary, 11536 N.W. Skyline Blvd., opens early so students and parents can tour the science fair. A billboard outside reads: "June 4, I.B. Inquiry Expo, 8-10, Talent show, 1-2:45." Kyron was to take part in both the expo/science fair and the talent show.

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/06/kyron_horman_chronology_of_eve.html

Nora Schreiber, a Skyline parent and volunteer, said the school has three main entrances and one secure exit. Two of the doorways are near the main office and are monitored, while a third on the north side of the school is not. Kyron's classroom is adjacent to that door, which opens onto a rear parking lot.

Schreiber said she and her son, J, 9, were interviewed Sunday by a federal agent. She said she told the agent that Friday was an especially hectic day at Skyline.

"On a normal day, seeing a stranger will make you go, 'Hmm. I wonder who that is?' On such a hectic day as Friday, there was such a lot going on. To tell you the truth, I was focused on looking at the (science) project and helping Jacob fill out his (evaluation) form and not on the faces around me."

Schreiber said Kyron was supposed to perform in the school's talent show at 1 p.m. but she didn't see him there.

So, why do we have the difference in reports? Very confusing.
