RC, we have 6 Belgians. Mother and 4 offspring plus one Belgian filly from Canada. We also have 2 painted drafts. We currently have 8 Suffolk Punch drafts, one mare is in foal. Also have one Standardbred, one miscellaneous good old horse that will pull a buggy also. One Quarterhorse 2 year old (still not cut) out of SS Diego and in direct lines to Weiscamp Skipper W. Two Palaminos (registered paints), two cremello half suffolk/half paint colts from this Spring, one donkey (Bob the pest) and 1 very smart Apaloosa. The Ap is the one that opens gates and knows her way around the barn. It's nothing to be in the barn and find her wandering right in. We've given up trying to figure how she gets in from the pasture. She's also my Parelli horse and works at the sale barn with the BarnGod. There her gate opening trick is an asset. Currently we also have 5 calves.

The grain is a special mix we get from Colorado Soy. The soy is so important this winter. Extra protein. It's mixed to order for our horses. Every horse on the place is gentle and easy going. All are approachable. Babies are gentled as soon as they are born and mothers don't mind our being around. The interesting thing is when I open the gate to the paddocks and they all come in for water, each horse will stop and acknowledge me. They stop for a little pet. Donkey follows me around and if I'm not careful, he'll push me down. He follows so close, his head is constantly in my back.

We love all our horses and I have a hard time when one is sold.

It was ;James', and English Springer Spaniel. He was drop dead perfect. They all were exceptional in the last 7 going for best in show. The German Shepard was masterful, and he was the only dog that was chosen both by America calling in and the judges in his working dog category.

America still wanted him for Best in Show, but the Spaniel, seen in so many classic turn of the century paintings, took it all.

Last year it was the Malmute, the Bloodhound before that and that little Terrier with the smiling face who won the previous year. Always a great competition to watch.

So, very pampered AQHA quarters huh ? Reining, barrels, western pleasure ? Great horses and we have a few diva quarters here! Australia - holy smoke, I'm thinking that would be a great place to have horses and just take off for days. We do have a few foals around here from time to time but it is not something I encourage our clients to do. Those little buggers make me worry for sure - but wonderful to be around.

We have a wide variety staying here, mostly warmbloods: Holsteiner, Danish WB, Dutch WB, an Andulasian, a Clydesdale (huge fellow), and some Trakehners. We also have a Peruvian Paso, a Paso Fino, some Missouri Fox Trotters, a few Arabs, a Tennessee WH, and several Quarter Horses. My wife and boys have fox trotters but I have to have my thoroughbreds. So that is the lot here, and not to forget a donkey named Sam who believes he is quite human and talks to me all the time...did you know if you clothespin a donkey's ears together they get quiet ?
Sounds like donkeys everywhere are generally sweet little things. I'll have to try the clothespin thing with Bob. He wakes up everything around the second he spots us. It's really a hoot.

Please deliver the Pasos to me as soon as you can, ok? I rode one once and would dearly love to have one. At 62, I would love to have that smooth ride.

A good friend of ours, an attorney, has Arabians. The awards are so numerous for them. They travel all over and I believe La Contessa is again Western Pleasure Champion in this region. Such beautiful creatures.

BG,

I like those Belgians, there is a fellow about 30 miles from here that has a whole herd of them and they are gentle and passive, even about their young. Beautiful coloring as well and I like their heads, nice face. He does use his for pulling and they are amazingly strong. Nice babies they are.

I get to hack those Pasos out a couple of times a week and they are a nice ride. I prefer the Paso Fino over the Peruvian though. The only thing about them, the Peruvian in particular, they seem to have suspension problems. Lots of rub downs for them when you get done riding or they pull up touchy. Otherwise - beautiful ride.

The clothes pin - just the fur luv - you get the flesh and you will definitely being hearing about it ! Donkey's are neat little ones - never have met a quiet one. I get tickled watching him with my thoruughbreds - he just runs right under them and just hehaws the whole way - too funny! He does like to play...I laugh a lot.

The lady that bought my diva, has changed business directions now...and is selling her 300 acres in Australia...and all the horses, etc. I'd absolutely love to be able to buy my mare back, but I couldn't afford to purchase her, and pay the $$$ for quarantine and shipment back! I should have bought Reba's (the mare) embryo when it was still in a test tube, LOL. I could have paid for the shipping back for that, haha.

Pictures of this absolutely gorgeous Australian ranch...and my mare (with me on her from 2002, LOL) are on their website. I'll PM you with the website addy if you're interested.

Wow! You have got a mix goin' on at your place. I bet it keeps you busy! I've only been by warmbloods once in my life. They are just huge! A co-worker had a barn specially built for the warmbloods, whereby everything was much larger than normal, or higher than normal. I went back to my 15.3 hand mare and thought she was a pony, I swear.

Ahhh, Sam...how cute! We have a little herd of donkeys down the road from us. They're all so cute and friendly. I think they'd do quite well in my backyard, they just look like big dogs, haha.

RC, you are definitely right about Belgians. Definitely gentle giants. We had a really rare occurance, I think. This Spring, Ginger, our Belgian mare delivered a dark colt. I mean chestnut brown with black legs, mane and tail. She was bred back to the same stud. She's been bred to "Mike" owned by an Amish friend for the fourth time. He swore up and down she wasn't near any other stud the entire time she spent there. She's blonde with flaxen mane, tail and feathers. This colt is a cute little think though. I have heard there are such things as throwbacks in all breeds. Now the Canadian Belgian is one of the Sorrel colored Belgians. She's going to be absolutely huge. Our draft horses pull a wagon or sometimes two. The BarnGod takes them to Burlington's Old Town Museum every summer weekend and drives between the museum and our historic carousel. He also does special tours. The paint drafts look spectacular doing this. We have to get busy and get the younger Belgians started pulling soon. One Suffolk mare and one gelding also pull.

I will be very careful pinning Bob's ears. Ok, hair only. He was given to us by a friend to keep our QH young stud company. However, I think we'll geld him this Spring. He's not fully dropped yet. I was on the phone one day to my stepdaughter while I was playing with him and I wondered if he had been gelded. He wasn't supposed to be. While I was on the phone to her, I reached under and felt around and found he just hadn't dropped yet. She was shocked that I would put my hand under there to find out. But all the horses we have are touchable anywhere. One of the first things I do with a foal is to scratch their butts around and under their tails. They love it. Stepdaughter was horrified one day when Hidalgo (the young stud) backed into me. She was sure I was going to get kicked, but he just wanted a little scratch.

That would just kill me - having her sold away. Yes, please send me the addy - would like to see the ranch and your mare. I just think a ranch in Australia has got to be so cool...chasing kangaroos --ye haw - get along little roos !

Yep, everything is a bit bigger for sure and it hurts alot bigger too when you go kablamo !

Hi BG,

I'm "butting" in here for a second, as I'm kinda laughing. My friends and I get a kick out of talking "horse talk" when in public, like standing in line or talking on the cell phone...and your post reminded me of that. You know, going on about when the semen is going to be shipped and needing to be picked up at the airport, haha. Or discussions about whether to use frozen semen or not...that'll get you looks in the pizza parlor, haha. Or talking about shoveling sh**...and meaning it :o

Knowing what you mean about feeling whether they've dropped or not  and scratching their rear ends...they do just love that, don't they?

Sometimes I think horsey people are in their own world. But, I wouldn't have it any other way.

No Charlie, and there is an innocent reason how I got it. My sister evidently sent it to me as a friend gave it to her for Christmas. I thought you had mentioned you love magic.

The Sorrel - with flaxen mane, tail, and feathers ? Beautiful - my favorite ! you know, that little could surprise you - might be off-color right now but they can sure change color in a hurry. One time we had a Lipanzaner mare here, she was in foal and out pops this black as coal baby...thing is all the Lipanzaners (well most) come out this way and just don't change until they mature. You could be surprised in the future !

Isn't that funny - non horse people think we are perverted ! Well if one ever has to clean out the beans or take a temperature, they will understand why such things are done won't they ? I also get them use to things in their noses, nothing wierd just sponges and such, but it sure helps if you ever have to mineral oil one. Sure saves a lot of trouble later... I've seen that look of disbelief many a time :)

I'm teasing with you Scandi, actually my wife watched the whole thing and thought it was hysterical, once the top layer came off however, I wasn't hanging around for the bottom layers to disappear !

I do like magic, but it was a tad difficult to concentrate on the magic - so I pulled my infamous disappearing act!

Not to worry luv - all is good and what I saw was funny and I am not in trouble by any means - she is laughing at me because I do blush quite easily. Laughter is good! :D

You bet Deputy. A co-worker has some quarters and one elderly black stud. Years ago he spent a small fortune to have his semen frozen and sells "straws". This is Comet Chex we're talking about. I purchased my stud for $800 a year ago because I liked his confirmation and attitude. I researched him on line later and found his sire and dam were both there. His Weiscamp - Skipper W lines are excellent. His attitude is laid back and I'll bet he won't be hard to start under saddle. I had an offer that I turned down for $2500, because I didn't like the person making the offer. He has a bad rep for cruelty and I won't tolerate that ever.

Lol@horsetalk about semen. you took me back to my teen years staying with my dad on his dairy farm and what happened when dad and I were in the big smoke (the city) at a coffee shop discussing the artificial insemination of his cows....which for the first time I had participated in earlier that morning and had never seen him do before (mom always 'protected' me from that part of farming lol)...

....so imagine for a second that this little teenager (I was 12) was all excited because she thought she'd done a good job helping out and my dad had just finished saying how difficult one of 'the old girls' was.

Now imagine being the family in the booth behind us as I blurted out excitedly just a wee bit too loudly......

"yeah she was difficult. I can't believe you got your arm right up her twat"

Morning all!

Haaallloooooooooo? YOO-HOO ....

Oh please don't bring this up again - I just about died - I stopped watching when things other than the red hankie started disappearing - Scandi was innocent about this though, she got the link sent to her, thought as you it was a magic thing and did not view it before she posted it - she had no idea what it was. So go easy on her about it pretty please?
