"There's no escaping bizarre causes of death in Florida," says the Sun-Sentinel

Am jealous that you got to know the "real" Keys. More than 20 years ago we vacationed there, watched sunsets at Hmmmmmmm, was it called Mallory Square ?

I think the Sun-Sentinel also did, first in the series, an article about the human terrors in FL. I could have sworn I did a thread on it but maybe not. Good though that an FL paper is up front about the oddities of the place! That says a lot - it's weird but it's us, in effect. I admire that.

ShowMe, I spend 6 mo. 30 miles south of Tallahassee, on the gulf. They are sure they are sometimes having terrible winters, but I bite my tongue. One time the pipes did freeze though. I love this god forsaken area, Tis just my speed.

I wish you could be a snowbird too.

Me too.

Keys look lovely but are too crowded for me...at least I don't know the best areas to escape the crowds. And so expensive....I decided hubby and I will maybe drive it down and back someday, but can't afford to stay more than a night.

I'd like a mild winter area of the panhandle. Kills off some of the bugs. Just don't like our bone chilling winters with the snow and ice.

Want it just to snow mildly on Christmas day....but nature won't listen to me.

Hi neighbor!
Today we drove beautiful 98 coming home from a wedding weekend in Appalach. I love the" Forgotten Coast". Our beach house is on the opposite side of St Joe from your place; I am there about a week of each month, year-round. It's ok with me for people to fear bad little bugs in the water. We don't need any more people there! My favorite days are when hardly no one walks down my beach... maybe a jogger & a couple dog-walkers.

By the way folks, bears are the real menace around the little beach towns. If I can find it, I'll post a pic of a bear sign with the beautiful blue gulf in the background.

I love St. Joe. Hubby was stationed at Tindal in Panama City so loves to visit up that way.

Born in Miami, raised in Hollywood before the first condo was built on Miami beach. Growing up most of my time was spent in the brush or beaches with an archaeologist and his sons preserving old indian burial grounds or recovering old spanish anchor chains before the building explosion across South Florida.

I'm with you legalmania, I left because of the over-growth and population explosion down there. Spent a good deal of time in the Keys camping, skin-diving and fishing. Too many cool stories to tell out loud lol.

BTW: I grew up down there before I-95 was built and they built it on top of Crystal Hill in Hollywood. (Only hill I can remember)

Oh, so now I am all jealous again about you being on 98 today. That stretch from Panacea to Appalach. is breath taking. My favorite gumbo is at Caroline's and we like Papa Jo too, oppppps - love Papa Jo.

If I could get in gear here and pack to go I would not be green with envy. We are Alligator Point Peeps.

Ps- we have bear proof garbage cans, hahaha

My father was in the service and he was stationed at Boca Chica Naval Base. I have to say it was a beautiful place in the early 70's then I went back in the 90's and couldn't believe the difference. I will never go back, it just isn't the same place I remember.

Reality Orlando,
We are smack in the middle between St Joe & Tyndall. The Air Force often gets the attention of people on the beach.... screaming jets put on quite a show. Our little fishing village has become quite urbane, We now have 4-story condos & a Dollar General Store we call "the mall", but I would go back to the way it was 10 years ago. It's been my beach for all my life.

ohoh, I love that stretch of highway too. If you have to travel, you may as well have the water 10 feet away on one side & booger-bay-bottom woods 10 feet on the other. We ate at Boss' Friday night (which is now the same as Caroline's) & had a wonderful salad & crab cakes at a sidewalk cafe for lunch on Saturday. I've never had a disappointing meal in Appalachicola. And I love the city-kitties & their trap, neuter, release program! ( I thought you must be in the AlliPoint/Panacea area.)

And I have to agree about the Keys. On our beaches, you can walk 20 miles or more. Down there everything is private.... but I do love the Conch Republic.

Ok, am wide awake since 5am and packing. thanks for the push and shove, really needed that! Lol
I'm a crab cake person too, not so much oysters, I know that's a little sad. Just a few years ago we used to buy gulf shrimp off the shrimp boat docked in Carrabelle. Our beach is always deserted in winter too. I look for shark teeth now, there has to be a limit on how many shells you can deal with. I think I may have already acquired the "Sanibel stoop" from years ago when I was young.
