I don't get what's so unusual about driving the baby around and why everyone is assuming the baby was sick?
At that age, they're cutting their second year molars and always yanking on their ears and fussing. She probably wanted to go work out so she drove the baby around to get her to go to sleep so she could carry her in the gym asleep and put her right in a crib at the day care.
I agree with the above.
My older nephew we called "Little Buddha" because he was so calm and always smiling. My younger nephew was different. He was a colicky baby and then he went through a period where he had some ear infections.
There were times when it seemed like he was maybe about to get an ear infection but maybe not. Not sick enough for my MD sister to take him to the pediatrician but not quite 100% normal, either. One test was to drive around for awhile with him. If he fell asleep, he was good to go and would stay asleep for hours (he had just gotten over excited). If driving around didn't put him to sleep, then there was something going on, usually an ear infection.
So, in Kyron's case, she went to the science fair with baby K--an event filled with new people and new kids, lots of motion and excitement. Then she went shopping, which meant more unfamiliar environments.
I could believe that baby K got into that fussy, could-be-earache-but-could-be-overexcitement mood.
And if all of the above were true, then I'd put on NPR and cruise around for awhile, see if the moving vehicle magic worked.
I've actually seen a lot worse things happen than taking a cranky toddler with an earache to the gym. We were waiting in line, in the pouring down rain, freezing our @sses off for 3 hours waiting for the mall to open on Black Friday... there was this lady with 3 kids ahead of us. All 3 were under 5 y/o and one was a 6 month old baby... dressed in a pair of thermal pajamas. No umbrellas, no baby bunting or coat or even a hat.. just the jammies and a blanket.
Every time I go somewhere, I always see someone with a young toddler with a trail of snot coming out their nose or hacking everywhere. People DO take their sick kids out to places... it's really not that uncommon.
ETA: She might have taken the truck to bring the project to and from school... but what if the teachers told her that they wanted to leave the projects up until the end of the day? She thought that she could bring it home after the science fair, but they could have told her that it was going on until late morning so they wanted them to stay set up until the end. She had no idea what time Kaine was supposed to come home so maybe she wanted to keep the truck in case she had to pick up the project later? Just sayin..
Long ago, when I was in a very unhappy first marriage, I got to the point where I just didn't want to be at home. I developed a hobby that allowed lots of travel, I took every chance I got to go places and even when I was at home, I got into the habit of just driving around aimlessly.
I'd put NPR or good music on and just drive around so that I didn't have to show up at home. I didn't want to be home and I would do anything to avoid it.
This was before cellphones were so common (and affordable). I had a beeper but darn, that thing, the battery panel was loose and it tended to jog loose when I set my purse down.
This is speculation only but if she didn't know when KH was going to be home, maybe she didn't particularly want to be home either.
The problem with this timeline is the same problem with the rest of the case: there are obvious holes and suspicious areas but all of them could have an innocent explanation as well.
ARGH.
