I think Waggoner is just answering the accusations that he was/is being untruthful, when it was a matter of when he knew what. Lavit is trying to paint him as intentionally misrepresenting the facts, but by using facts Waggoner didn't know when he wrote them.

IOW, Lavit is conflating the interviews into one event, so he can discredit Waggoner. Waggoner is protecting himself by clarifying what he knew when.
