I'm sorry, but I just don't find this to be mitigating. There are many people out there who don't know their fathers, who have "unstable" mothers, even endure horrible abuse, who don't go on to brutally rape and torture and murder TWO PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

My Mom had 4 kids before she was 22. My father left her when when I was 2 and she was pregnant with my baby sister. She worked four jobs at one time and ALL of her kids turned out to be successful children, never did drugs, and never murdered anyone. It makes me so mad when people use that as an excuse. We rose above the poverty and anyone can do it. HE CHOSE NOT TO!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok sorry my rant.

My father died two months before my birth and I was their fifth child. I never knew my father either. My Mother had to raise five children in poverty also. This is no excuse for what they did. MHO

Me and my family were homeless for six months and lived in a small truck camper because our house was foreclosed on....next!

ETA: and the camper for four of us had no bathroom or shower either!
