First revolver:
.22 caliber long rifle Clerk double-action revolver (Cobbins') - it was missing a cylinder retaining pin which keeps the cylinder retained in gun and aligned with barrel... works, but without the pin, you had to line it up manually.

[couldn't get a good image of it - she's not holding them up]

Second revolver:
(Davidson's)
.22 caliber
high standard revolver
"Single action-double action" (I think she was correcting herself)
Has a firing pin - works fine
6 lans and grooves in barrel
Lans & grooves cause the bullet to spin - unique to type
Individual features like use, abuse, etc. create marks on bullet that are unique to gun itself

Bullet casings found on shelf in front porch and top of fridge of Davidson's house matched this second, "High standard" gun.

The bullets recovered from Chris Newsom's back and neck came from a high standard revolver like the second gun - similar class characteristics, but lack of sure agreement on individual characteristics- can't say certain comes from gun - can't identify or exclude.

Compared to test fires from the first/Clerk gun (Cobbins'): signature disagreement between the characteristics - didn't come from that gun.

Pics of second gun (Davidsons - high standard revolver):

So if I understand correctly, Davidson's gun is the closest match....Cobbin's gun not so much. Both are 22's

TY that one is working

Muffet, thank you for the gun recap. I was struggling with it.

Pointing out how many brands of guns have the same rifling characteristics......75K revolvers in a year by three manufacturers.

Well if they can't be sure which gun fired the shots... Rome's gun must have been a .22 also.
Yep, but remember Cobbins didn't do it (according to Cobbins.) Davidson did. That brings us to now where Davidson didn't do it, Cobbins did. Two bad the jury doesn't get to hear the whole story, where they accuse each other.

I believe the 'darker' gun is Davidsons and the 'lighter' gun is Rome's.

Pros recross, which of the two guns would go pop pop pop in quick succession. More likely the high standard gun, fired more automatically.

Which gun is this?

Defense recross. Talking about rotation and advance. Don't understand the answer.

Another point showing why they should have all been tried together! :furious:

That would be Davidson's gun.

Ohhh good - which would be most likely to go "pop pop pop" in quick succession? Davidson's, because Cobbins' Clerk almost always required him to manually rotate the chamber between each shot, since it lacked a cylinder pin.

Juror question. Were the first two bullets more than likely fired from.....jeeze cutting out bad here.

  • #117
Juror question - what creates individual, unique marks on bullets (not the class characteristics shared by guns of that type)

Answer: Use, abuse, corrosion, erosion.

  • #118
Pros asking about the house measurements.

  • #119
Basically, she's been saying the third bullet, found in Chris' skull, had been too squished by the soft lead hitting the skull for her to really find the identifying marks.

Witness excused. Break for lunch.
