MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Two days after a woman's body was found on a barge floating down the Mississippi River, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) is still trying to piece together what Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner called a "complex puzzle".

"We have far more questions than we have answers," Bucker said in the start of a press conference along the Mississippi River on Monday, October 23.

People visiting the Shelby Forest waterfront over the weekend reacted to the grim discovery.

“It’s very sad," Gabe Boyd said. "Just a random body found that nobody knows what happened to and to the family it happened to. You never want to lose someone that is close to you.”

“I can’t imagine a body being found on a river, what that does to a family,” Sissy Harrison, who’s been visiting the area for the past 30 years, told FOX13.

“It’s sad," said Julie Simmons, who was also visiting Shelby Forest with family Saturday. "I pray they find out who it is."

The mother says she sent her a picture from the bridge with a barge in the background. There was a man in the photo with her. She spoke of going to sing karaoke and showed her mom her new boots. But, if she fell accidentally, where is the man and why didn't he report it?

Heartbroken doesn’t begin to describe the emotion LaRena Darrow is feeling after finding out her daughter is dead.

“I don’t want to think about my baby being hurt like that and nobody being there to save her or being there to help her,” Darrow said.

“I have no idea. I had spoken with her Thursday night and she had send me a couple pictures of her on a bridge and she looked so happy,” Darrow said. “And she was about to go sing karaoke and that was the last time I talked to her.”

But West Memphis, Arkansas records show that Silas was taken into custody by police on Oct. 15. A police report says she repeatedly called 911 from a gas station across from Southland Casino, asking police to give her a ride out of the city because she was scared of something.

When police arrived she told them she was having a “panic attack.” They took her to the station in handcuffs. She asked to talk to her mom and dad, said she was scared and confused, and asked to be taken to a “psych ward.”

Silas pleaded guilty last Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of communicating a false alarm, a charge similar to filing a false report. She was given a suspended sentence of time served, according to records.

“She was an amazing mother. My grandson is missing out on such a wonderful person. She was such an angel,” Darrow said.

Officials say Silas was not found with any identification, but Darrow says someone has Silas’ phone. She said when she tried to call it, a man answered but she doesn’t know who he is.
OK woman found dead on barge called 911 before death

An Oklahoma woman found dead on a Tennessee barge had been arrested for repeatedly calling 911 for help just days before her body was found.

According to Arkansas court records, Silas pled guilty in court to the misdemeanor of communicating a false alarm on Oct. 18.

I'm sorry, but arresting someone for calling 911 when they are scared and being asked to be taken to a psych ward because of a panic attack seems down right wrong to me! And now she has an arrest record - not that it matters now, (sadly) but dang, I'd have taken her case for free!

Oh this is very sad. I wonder if the feeling scared and panic attack was actually her instincts warning her about danger. The ’gift of fear“ concept.

I've been wondering how she landed on top of the barge, a question @Teche also asked earlier today on the Tamia thread. My feeling is she jumped onto it from either the I-55 bridge or from the Big River Crossing walkway on the semi-adjacent Harahan Bridge to the north. Was the barge idling under the bridges at the time? Or could she have jumped onto the barge while it was underway?
ETA: while the 55 bridge is hardly ideal for pedestrians, it does have narrow walkways on both sides.

They need to determine a cause of death.

From the article:

Deputies said the barge left a port near the Interstate 55 bridge in Memphis around 11 p.m. Friday.

They said an inspection of the barge had just been done. Investigators said the barge idled in the middle of the River for a little more than three hours, allowing traffic to pass.

Deputies said the barge received clearance to move down the river around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

They said crew members discovered the body around 7:15 a.m. Saturday.

unless the was the only way LE could transport?

Agree that taking this person to a hospital would likely have led to a different outcome.

I would love any help dealing with my baby girls death. More recent events are the detective is refusing to allow me to confirm evidence he allegedly has that my daughter supposedly drew before she "jumped " landing on that barge in a five minute window. The autopsy report says the manner of death was multiple blunt force trauma to the head and torso. How does that happen? She also had a four inch cut across her dominant hand on the palm? How does that happen when jumping off a bridge only to land on a barge? Please I have contacted as many attorneys I can find but none are willing to take the civil rights violation that lead to her wrongful death case?? I beg anyone who can help to do just that please? This is literally eating me inside feeling as though I can't get justice for my baby girl through no fault of my own other then not having the money to retain a lawyer? I can't squeeze my blood to sell ?? (Can't squeeze blood out of a turnip)?

Yes it most certainly would have had a different outcome considering I would have been there to see her walk out of the hospital or the police station if I had been aware of the situation.

Because he left town when she was arrested leaving her in the hands of his identical twin who killed her three days later.
