TBI now assisting Milan Police in search for woman missing for three months

Police do not have any evidence to support foul play or criminal activity connected to Phillips' disappearance, so TBI cannot take on the case in an official capacity. Instead, they are providing technical support and advice as the Milan Police Department continues to investigate.

TBI has confirmed they are assisting in the case. Sellers said TBI has resources that MPD doesn't, like agents that can give polygraph exams, forensic resources, and technology. TBI also has agents that have worked similar cases that have offered advice.

Phillips was last seen in Trenton with an acquaintance sometime in early January, Sellers said. Multiple people confirmed seeing her there.

"We feel confident that she went to Trenton on her own, spent a night there, and then the next morning was the last time that she was seen that we can confirm," Sellers said.

Police at first believed that Phillips had traveled to Jackson with some friends, but their investigation revealed this wasn't true.

But though police have no evidence to suspect foul play, Sellers said Phillips, a diabetic, has not had her insulin for more than two months, and that's not normal.

Sarah Phillips has been missing since she left her father's home in Milan on Jan. 9. She was last seen in Trenton sometime in January, but her sisters said they don't know of any close friends that Phillips had in that area. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agreed to assist the Milan Police Department in the search for Phillips in March.

Her oldest sister, Moriah Leem, said the last time she talked to Phillips was via Facebook Messenger on Jan. 9. It was the tenth anniversary of their mother's death, and Leem wanted to check in.

"She said, 'I'm OK. How are you?'" Leem recalled. "I wrote her back and said I'm OK, and that was it."

Milan is 45 mins from where I'm at today. I have many friends and family there.
I grew up in Jackson TN and I know Milan TN very well.
The other lady that sits w my mom lives in Trenton TN.
Flyers are everywhere.

Sarah is still missing, and there have been no major updates in the six months since someone last saw her. There are now billboards up of her that will be in several locations in Tennessee. If anyone has any information, please come forward. I am including more pictures. Thank you.

Oh man, I can't believe it's been six months! I am glad to hear that investigators still have leads to follow, though.

Oh no! This is awful. Prayers for her family and loved ones.

Noting:

• The skull found in Gibson County (near the Gibson-Carroll County line) has been identified as that of Sarah Michelle Phillips.
  
• Sheriff Thomas said that a dog brought the remains to its owner in a wooded area on Saturday.
• LE searched the area for additional remains/evidence but didn’t find anything.
• The ME’s office in Memphis identified the remains using partial dental records.
• Authorities will continue to search the area and investigate the circumstances of Phillips’ disappearance.

Rest in peace, Sarah.

Gibson County sheriff: Skull found Saturday identified as missing Milan woman

• Gibson County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and searched the area with the help of cadaver dogs, but found nothing.
• "I hate that a young person's life has been taken, but it helps us now to go from trying to find her to trying to find who did this or what happened to her," Sellers said. "The sheriff's department and Milan PD are going to work together and do everything we can to try to figure out what happened to her."
• The TBI and Trenton PD are also involved in the ongoing investigation.
• The TBI have assisted the Milan PD by providing technical support and advice.
• Because Milan investigators did not suspect foul play or criminal activity at the time, the TBI could not take on the case in an official capacity.
  
• Police confirmed that Phillips was last seen in Trenton in early January.
• Phillips' sisters told the Jackson Sun in April that they were not aware of any close friends Phillips had in the Trenton area.

“The family first reported her last seen in Milan,” Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas said. “So Milan Police Department originally picked up the investigation”

Sheriff Thomas says she was then placed in Trenton by surveillance video, cell phone records and eyewitnesses.

Then on Saturday, a man was walking his dog and found a skull.

“They were playing, running in and out of the woods, running up on him, he turned around and one of them had it in their mouth,” Sheriff Thomas said.

Law enforcement have interviewed people who knew Sarah.

“People that were last seen with her or around her or knew somebody that was with her, so there’s been a multitude of interviews conducted but we don’t have anyone I would call a suspect at this point,” said Sheriff Thomas.

Sheriff Thomas says they aren’t releasing the exact location of where the skull was found, since they’ll more than likely have to return there for the investigation.
