Question: Does this mean mom and dad lied about the second phone? That it was BR who gave her the second phone and they knew about it because she called them on it? Does that mean they misled the officers that were searching for her because they had had contact with her?

I'm going to nervously re-read my postings on him. They had to know this all along. Why they only released those details in the CC, and made no mention of this? I have no words right now.

It sounds like the FBI showed up and had no knowledge about the SD they sent.
IMO he was still in protective mode for her.
It sounds clear that it was sent now.
Which is what he should have done. I can't blame her for not trusting local LE. I feel certain that her adopted dad would have killed her had she been returned to the home!

I can sure see a young girl in that situation begging him to keep her hidden and not turn her over to police. She must have been terrified that they would return her to her mom and stepdad.

If I'm reading everything right his attorney is saying that there was a timing issue. It was unknown to LE a letter and SD card was delivered to the FBI office in St. Louis. They found SLP through her social media accounts. So they arrested him. Later the validation of the FBI delivery was made.

That makes sense.

One item of caution is that this is just a document filed by his attorney. I am sad to say LE may have another view. But I am hoping and praying that this guy was "well-intentioned and flawed in execution" until I hear otherwise.

I logged back in after quite some time specifically to comment on what I think was a possible scenario but then chickened out because I thought I'd be run out on a rail, but here was what I thought could have happened in regards to BR:

"What if BR is one of those fairly creepy dudes I've met who looks at Barely Legal pr0n and is attracted to teen girls but would never in a million years consider himself a child molester. What if he's flirting in this game with a teen girl and the flirting/friendship turns weird and she starts confessing all these horrors that seem too terrible to be true but he doesn't know what to think. Part of him believes her but a huge part does not. He decides (weird dude that he is) that he needs to find out for sure whether she is telling the truth because he doesn't want to walk away if there's really something terrible going on, but he expects there isn't. When she actually sends him the video of her rape he is so horrified and disgusted he can't think straight and decides he needs to immediately rescue her, and on the long drive there starts grappling with wth he's going to tell the authorities given he's been chatting with a 14 YO and has had a rape video sent to him. Maybe dude's enough of a creeper that he even fantasized about dating 14 YO girls at some point but the rape video sickened him so much that he doubly felt compelled to prove that's not what he's about and be the hero instead."

I admit I did not think that BR actually helped get this info out to the FBI, so that's a surprise twist to the potential motives and actions I was leaning toward.

Also early on something *really* bothered me about the reference to SLP caring so much for animals and how much that was stressed once we found out about her adoptive father- it immediately read as a *threat* to her- and I am fully sickened to find out about the dog and that my instincts on that were right. This poor girl and her siblings. What horror.

I'm happy and relieved to hear that BR might not have harmed SP. He still broke the law with the recording coercion and taking her across country. Good Lord man, you're a college graduate with a job IRL. How could he have been so foolish??

My hinky meter is still up, but it will be interesting to see if LE and FBI will negotiate on his charges.

FTR, I don't follow SM so I was not privy to all the rumors floating around <nor do I want to be>. I wondered where the thoughts were coming from that he might have been just a jughead.

And if LE is following the example of JC (no charges in the County she was found in thus not much disclosure of her 88 days) perhaps there will be no further detailed charges for BR? I don't know. Perhaps one of our attorneys may chime in? @gitana1 ?

I think the situation is different for JC. Assuming that they have plenty of evidence to convict her kidnapper of murder, it’s not necessary to try him for anything he did to her in his home county—the sentences for double murder should be enough.

In this case, where the crimes have lesser sentences, there’s more of a desire/need to charge people with everything. (I’m still not sure where BR falls on the spectrum between—sexual predator/well-meaning & terrible idiot

SLP needed time to write out her six (6) pages of detailed abuse. They needed to make the video on the burner phone. Dang I said it before, that is one brave young girl!

Much of the information seems to be based on her written story. Those written words and her verbal statements to LE if they are taken seriously will go a long way in helping her regain her sense of control over her own life. He seems to be the first to believe her and to act on that belief. She said even her friends would have ratted her out. He made a series of not so wise decisions but it is apparent that it was not a clearly thought out plan in any sense of the word.

It feels like her let her take her time. Maybe not pushing her too soon was the correct thing to do?
They drove to St. Louis from WI to mail the letter and SD.
I'm not familiar with the area, would that be a day drive?
Letting her get her ducks in a row before writing the letter makes sense.

Maybe with work/school? He probably couldn't stay by her side 24/7. Then had to plan the trip down to St. Louis. 5 1/2 hours each way. That's how I read that anyway...

I can see something like that, although I would speculate social development issues rather than a creeper. But my 23yo son still builds worlds on RoBlox, so I might be a little biased...
