I too was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt before jumping to conclusions.

Respectfully, when the Feds charge a person as the evidence of that person's coercion is spelled out in their conversation with a desperate child who they coldly manipulate into sending child , ignoring her frantic pleas that to do so will break her, I don't think believing he's likely a predator as charged is jumping to conclusions.

Instead, for me it was a steady, logical march.

Yet- right now he’s in federal custody I believe rape would be local jurisdiction And am not sure what constitutes a federal rape charge ? JMO

They could charge him with trafficking at the federal level.

Judge finds probable cause in case of Madison man accused of child exploitation
Authorities say there’s evidence a Madison man who brought a missing 14-year-old Tennesee girl to Madison, may have sexually assaulted her.

Rogers sat quietly in court in jail clothes as Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Pfluger conceded he may have initially had pure motives of helping the girl get away from danger. But Pfluger says Rogers lied to the FBI about the girl’s whereabouts and kept her in a closet of his mother’s Madison basement or in the trunk of his car.

Pfluger also says medical testing on the girl found injuries related to sexual activity not involving her father. The prosecutor says Rogers may also be charged with transporting the girl across state lines for sex.

A federal magistrate ruled there is probable cause to believe Rogers produced child and decided the 31-year-old Madison man remain jailed.

Tuesday’s court appearance was attended by Rogers’ mother and other loved ones.

Bednarek says Rogers has no criminal history and is a recent college graduate with two jobs. Authorities say Rogers’s mother was unaware of the teen’s presence in her home over the two weeks she stayed there, until investigators found her and Rogers was arrested.

I wanted to give BDR the benefit of the doubt, but haven't been able to dismiss the fact that Pfluger said a week ago that he would be charged with taking a minor across state lines for sexual purposes. This, unfortunately, just confirms that.
I think in his mind he felt he was doing what he could to save her, when he went and got her and took her to WI, and helped her write the 6-page letter and send the evidence to the FBI. I even understand why he may have felt it necessary to lie about her being there since he didn't want her returned to RP, and didn't know yet that the FBI had the evidence and RP had been arrested.
But he made a series of bad decisions along the way.
And this latest news cannot be dismissed. His lawyers said intent was relevant. But good intentions cannot excuse this.

What I like the most about the threads on Websleuths is that we can listen to what each other is saying, respectfully.

You state in your post (above) that you"feel that he groomed her." And that's your valid feeling. Just as each of us share our opinions. Valid as well, of course.

I don't care to make an opinion or share a feeling until we hear the case as we have little factual information/evidence to go on.

The reason I come to Websleuths is because of the rules here. Posters don't argue or ridicule others' opinions or feelings. Websleuths is a respect-based community.

My interest is in the legal arguments and this case, which, I believe, may set a legal precedent. It's the legal aspect of this case that truly intrigues me.

I am curious if your opinion remains in light of this latest hearing news ? Regarding legal precedent?

I was speaking of myself trying not to jump to conclusions. Prior to this case, I usually assumed they were guilty until proven innocent. I was all for arrest, trial and execution. This year I'm trying to keep an open mind and "not jump to conclusions" like I usually do.

I mourn her loss of innocence. It's been stated that SP said the rape occurring in the home had been going on for nearly a decade. Did she ever have a sense of self, has her body ever really been hers? EVERYONE did fail her-- I pray that Lady Justice won't.

I’m hoping for guilty pleas but am probably foolish as these two men (RP and BR) never had her best interest in mind IMO - I’m curious what BR told his lawyer and if they were blindsided in court today ? This new information was not in the complaint and one of our sleuthers with PACER Access (federal court online portal) said no new documents were filed before the hearing IIRC - strategy by the prosecutor ? JMO

It is possible that BDR did at least partially have that motive, but also felt compelled to help her after he saw the tape. Maybe his motives were all predatory, but maybe they weren't. It is so hard to tell. Nonetheless, what he ultimately did was wrong.
The more details that come out, the more I worry about SLP.

The bolded part - could this mean there was no semen to test? Could this be why no rape charges have been filed? They cant determine for sure who assaulted her the most recent time?

I too understand the need to think he wanted to save her but as soon as those conversations regarding the making of the video were released - I felt this was a predator. I hope that she is surrounded by fully vetted loving people who may or may not be related to her - I’m so afraid she asked for help from others and was not believed or the abuse was allowed IMO - I hope I’m very wrong but I don’t think so and I hope TN allows a child a say in who she lives with JMO
