Generally they try not to say anything until the medical examiner makes an official pronouncement. We've seen cases where remains have been mistakenly said to be a child or a female because somebody on the scene thought a blanket or other item looked feminine or childish.
Also, when there's a high-profile case like Summer's in the vicinity, most LE will try even harder to keep all information confidential.
