The parents weren’t all that helpful either to be fair. IIRC from previous links Candus said she walked Summer the 15 or so feet from grandma’s trailer to the house and inside. She told the boys to watch her and left, only to return a few minutes later. Summer was nowhere to be found, upstairs or downstairs. “She was just gone.”

And Don’s focus was mainly on how much Summer loved him and how he’ll see her again in heaven. He insisted she had been abducted.

IMO the fact that they lost parental rights of the three remaining siblings and subsequent behavior by both Candus and Don - drunk driving, constant YouTube interviews, the revelation that Don had sexually abused a young relative - doesn’t describe a stable, healthy environment.

For those reasons I can’t place all the blame on LE if the parents themselves may or may not have been as forthcoming as they could have been. MOO of course but I sometimes feel like this is too similar to the familiar “woke up, child gone, door open” story we read about all too often.
