Tom was last seen leaving his girlfriend's home in Palmdale, California at approximately 10:00 pm on December 5, 1979. Authorities believe he made it back to his own apartment, but disappeared afterward. The police were notified of his disappearance 3 days later, but waited another 3 days to go to his apartment to investigate.
Tom's vehicle was found two weeks later, when Craig Moore was pulled over driving it into California from Nevada. Tom's jacket was in the trunk, and the pink slip had been signed over from Tom to Moore. But there was no sign of Tom. A recently fired handgun was also found under the seat. Moore was arrested but eventually released for lack of evidence.
