Toronto, Tunnel found near sporting venue

  • #61
What sort of terrorist would hang a rosary and a Remembrance Day poppy?
The kind that would want people to ask the exact same question you just asked.

Red herring.

I like CoolJ's theory better with the Catholic extremists. :giggle:

Call me crazy. But. Has Toronto LE investigated other venues for the games to confirm there aren't any other tunnels being built?

" Has York U. tunnel been there 'for years'?
Police get 'hundreds of tips' since mystery revealed"

" Meanwhile, Toronto Police would neither confirm nor deny if officers are looking into a link between the mysterious tunnel near York U. and a similar discovery in Mississauga in 2012.

Mississauga Councillor Pat Saito said Mississauga's own mysterious tunnel was 20 feet long, 12 feet wide and 8 feet high and was dug into the ground in the woods near a dog park near Meadowvale Boulevard and Hwy. 407. Stairs had been built into the structure, she said.

Peel Police were called to investigate, she said. Eventually, the structure was filled in by city crews and Saito said they never determined who built it or why.

Toronto Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu told The Mississauga News she couldn't confirm or deny whether investigators are aware of the Mississauga tunnel, which is about 35 km west of the Rexall Centre along Hwy. 407."

Okay. The thread title finally made me curious.

My vote goes to an older homeless hermit with mining experience.

No, it was not clear. It was reportedly very close. And there is time to build a tunnel that moves closer, I think.

I don't think it was finished yet. The lights were on and it seems like someone had been there recently. If they were done I think they'd shut down the generator. People around here use generators and they are loud. They use them during power outages. They usually have to run them just outside the garage for venting. If you drive by a house with one you know it.

Of course there could be quieter ones, the loud ones are all I know.

Call me crazy. But. Has Toronto LE investigated other venues for the games to confirm there aren't any other tunnels being built?

I think they need to take a team and walk around the entire area near the venue and look for more. JMO

A few random thoughts:

Southern Ontario is full of heavily forested land. A lot of these venues are surrounded by bush, I would imagine. Maybe more of these things, connected to the Games or not?

I like the cadaver dog idea. It would be prudent to check the tunnel and surrounding land, just in case.

It appears from the tone of the original press conference that the tunnel was not booby-trapped, which is good. (But then again, no traps make it appear more innocuous, and that is good for the criminal, if this is a crime.).

I think we are playing with semantics when we describe it as a "tunnel" vs. a "chamber", or whatever. The point is that we don't know whether it was going to be extended outward any further, or just worked on in some other way on the inside, to completion. It had elements of both. What I find troubling is that a long "hallway" is a good way of trapping intruders who drop down from the entrance, while you are in the "pod" portion at the end, possibly with a weapon.

I had read that police found evidence that people were hanging out at the tunnel, eating and drinking. So, people were there. What exactly they were thinking or up to, is a mystery.

Theft is never a good thing. The fact that the beams were possibly stolen from the Rexall Centre is not a good sign. It may be just petty crime, but taken with everything else, it is not good. JMHO.

Breaking news: two men have stated that they built the tunnel for personal reasons. Case closed. No further investigation. Can't link from my phone.

Poor guys. All that work for nothing. ;)

Oh well, I guess that settles it. Nothing suspicious here to see. I'd like to know how they reached the conclusion that this was done by two guys just for fun. :banghead:

I'm sorry, but I call BS on this supposed "man-cave". Please.

Yeah, because a couple of younger guys that want to build a "man-cave" always bring a wooden rosary and poppy with them.

They won't name the people and they're not going to charge them. Case closed. How convenient.

Not buying it.

rbbm.

"Toronto tunnel dug by 2 men as 'man cave', police say
Police say no criminal intent behind construction of mystery tunnel near Pan Am Games site
"

"Two men in their 20s dug the bunker-like tunnel found in north Toronto as a "man cave" to hang out in, police say.

The tunnel, which was discovered in January but first reported by CBC News last week, was dug near York University’s Keele campus and the Rexall Centre, a major tennis venue that's set to host part of this summer's Pan Am Games, as well as the high-profile Rogers Cup tournament.

"It is simply two guys who just wanted to dig a cave," said Toronto police spokesman Victor Kwong.

Alright, nothing to see here, lets go home. (sarcasm).

So, no provincial offences charges for digging in a conservation area? No municipal bylaw infractions?

We just have two dudes and their "fort". One hell of a structure for two guys to build for what amounts to s...s and giggles.

I can't quite understand this ending either. Something stinks here, and I think anyone with any intelligence can see that, too.

...In a brief news release issued early Monday morning, police said they received several tips about the case that allowed them to identify two men.

..."We contacted them, interviewed them, and are satisfied with all the information we received," Kwong wrote.

..."Investigators have verified their account and are satisfied there was neither criminal intent nor any threat to the people or city of Toronto," he wrote.

:gaah:

...Police said the two men were "very apologetic" for what they'd done.

...Investigators believe the men began working on the tunnel last September.

...Kwong said the men were not connected to York University, Rexall Centre or the Pan Am Games. He also said the men didn't have an engineering background or any formal training in this type of construction.

Police said "enormous" interest from the media generated a tip that allowed investigators to identify the two men.

Their investigation into the tunnel is now closed, police said.

Thanks for the update! That's hilarious! I'm not surprised.

When I was a teen, a big group of us ranging from 18 to 22 years old cut down trees and built a real honest to goodness log cabin. It took us two summers of solid work. Then whoever owned the property discovered it and tore it down.

One of these guys had a pretty decent boss...one who would loan him expensive gear for long periods of time. I hope he is okay now that he knows it was sitting abandoned in a public forest for extended periods of time.

Yes, I get the idea of a man-cave. Seriously though, generators, sump pumps, tonnes of earth, all this sneaking around. I am not saying that there is a terrorist waiting to pop out of my dessert, but honestly, this is pretty weird. It doesn't have to be terror related, but it is really peculiar behaviour.

"It was professionally done". Then, "These guys had no formal training". One of them worked in construction. You can get the general idea of how to build something through experience, without understanding the physics or structural engineering practices, or how to read blueprints, etc. This guy had the knowledge.

I just can't think of what was going through their heads. Maybe these two are just a bit loopy. JMHO.

  • #78
If they were making a "man cave", then why did they need to dig a 33 ft tunnel first?

I'm not buying the official story at all. Either the two guys were LE (hence no names, charges, etc) or Toronto LE has had the wool pulled over their eyes (which wouldn't surprise me considering their handling of a few other serious cases over the years)

That is a tremendous amount of work and effort and resources for 'nothing.' Makes no sense to me. whatever, lol
