Toronto, Tunnel found near sporting venue

  • #81
A place for two 20-something men to "hang out"? Sorry but that makes no sense. There have been a lot of pictures both online and in the news showing the inside of this tunnel and the way it was constructed, all by hand............it would have taken a lot of time and effort. And look at the lumber that was used, nobody saw them transporting this lumber and other supplies through the fence?

Curious that two men can enter a regional Conservation Authority property and without permission covertly dig an large tunnel in the middle of a secluded wooded area adjacent to a site that will be soon be secured as a PanAm Games venue, using planks supposedly stolen from the Rexall Centre’s stockpile for auxiliary seating and not have committed a criminal offense.

The “man cave” explanation sounds hollow given all the work involved and its location and direction, but perhaps that explanation was conveniently chosen the many theories discussed in the media. This project for “personal reasons” involved an incredible amount of work and expense (building materials, a generator, gasoline, compressor, sump pump, extension cables and waterproof
light fixtures). Using the dimensions reported in the press, it required hand
excavation and removal of around 20 cubic meters of earth, weighing some 30
tonnes. Using construction estimate tables for skilled laborers, it would have
taken 2 men around 300 man-hours to complete this project including shoring and
dealing with drainage. That’s a month of full-time work each!!!

Good to know it is legal to build underground bunkers on public property. I could use some extra storage space, and heck, since it is free land, I might as well build my own doomsday bunker. Just in case ;)

If it was built for a man cave why such a long tunnel? I would think short tunnel into a roundish " room". Heck of a lot of time and energy just to make a hallway.

Except that the 2 guys who constructed this tunnel, according to LE, were in their 20s.

Okay. The thread title finally made me curious.

My vote goes to an older homeless hermit with mining experience.

From what I'm reading, a lot of Torontonians feel that LE are covering something up. I agree. One has to wonder if LE has apparently concluded that this was just two 20 yr old males simply building themselves a 'man cave', in an attempt to trivialize this all, so as not to draw more negative attention that could impact attendance and the $$ that will come to the city with the Pan-Am Games. There has to be a reason that the names of the 2 men haven't been released. There has to be a reason that LE aren't going to even charge them with theft (theft of the lumber they stole from Rexall) or mischief. LE must know a lot more but they are trying to downplay this all for a reason. I agree.

You have the man ours and tremendous time and effort involved. And the knowledge. How many 20somethings know how to dig an underground bunker that will not cave in on them? It's not that easy.

I agree. Even if they do have some construction skills, who spends days on end digging this thing?

Yes, different people have different tastes, but do they really expect us to believe some guy lent a part-time worker expensive construction equipment; which they more or less dumped in the woods after doing a stealth job building a 33 foot bunker like set-up in some Toronto parkland?

It may not be at all terrorist related, but come on.

I find it odd that the police are saying that this is an honest mistake, and the guys are just a couple of blue collar individuals who are very apologetic, now this will all go away.

If there are charges for digging on Crown conservation land or any municipal bylaw offences, I am sure their names will be a matter of record soon. Or, if there are no charges, and nothing is heard from this again, I will be really suspicious.

I wonder how the Toronto police would have handled Jodi Arias. "Ohhhh.. Ninjas did it. Put out an APB on two ninjas.

From the link (pictures, video and more at link):

It really was intended to be a man cave after all.
The final pieces of the curious case of the Toronto Tunnel are finally falling into place, like the last few pages of a Hardy Boys novel.

via FacebookThe mystery man behind the Toronto tunnel has stepped into the light: meet 22-year-old Elton McDonald.

Elton McDonald, a 22-year-old construction worker who grew up nearby, sat down with the Toronto Sun to tell the story of the tunnel that the CBC discovered and outlets as far flung as the BBC covered.
So why did he do it? To flex his skills and find some peace and quiet.
“It was a secret for sure but it was not built for nefarious reasons,” McDonald said in the Sun interview. “It was a place that no one knew about.”

BBQ in a tunnel? CO gas danger? Was his tunnel vented or did he keep the opening to his tunnel open?

Now that he has come into the open, I can't see anything even remotely nefarious. :blushing:

I sincerely believe that he was naive about the environmental and legal implications of tunneling in a conservation area.

A tip of my hat to Elton and his friends.

wow. We need some work done on our house. I wish Elton and his friend lived closer. I would hire them. I like his effort and determination. And it looks like they work cheap. lol
