I don't recall seeing any media links to support that MR was collecting welfare, or that he is in receipt of legal aid.

I don't have a link, but think about it. He has no steady employment, drives a clapped out Civic and lives at his mother's. He would have had to win a big lottery to pay for his defence. Of course he has legal aid. I imagine his clothing is procured for him by his lawyer and paid for by the defence budget, ultimately, Legal Aid.

The farmer would have added to the main rock pile yes, not to the area under the tree. He would not be able to back a cart of rocks to unload them right at the tree line, doesn't make sense. JMO

Pollanen says they were "depressed fractures," characteristic of focused force applied to the head.

He can also tell the head injuries were not caused by rocks, based on other parts of the skull.

The fractures beg the question of what was the instrument, Pollanen says.
