Rafferty judge warns jury that images during pathologist testimony will be the worst they will see this trial

Carnegie is going through Pollanen's credentials. He's considered an expert witness.

He's been the chief forensic pathologist in Ontario since 2006.

Rafferty wearing a purple shirt, purple striped tie, the same shade of deep purple worn by Tori's family because it was her favourite colour

A long list of very impressive credentials for Pollanen.

Her body was probably preserved from the cold. They had snow that week. I don't know what the temperatures were in 2009 but if I take today's temperatures, I would guess it was approx the same. At night it gets to below zero still.

Also, who expects a dead body to be there? He was probably oblivious to his surroundings, going about doing what he's always done. If she was underneath rocks, he wouldn't notice. :(

Maybe he wasn't aware of the news reports concerning the case, and wasn't aware that police were on the lookout for her remains. The lady in the CFRB 1010am interview stated he is a Menonite. Maybe they are very old fashioned, and do not have radio, tv or internet. :twocents:

If you missed the interview I'm talking about you can hear it here:

Well lots of unusual and nasty smells on a farm ie large composts, chicken coops, dead fish (don't even ask), fertilizers etc etc...it is a term used around here to express don't ask if something smells nice or do you smell that...to a farmer...as they have farmer's nose.

yes I understand what you mean...actually visited a Mennonite farm back in the fall and was shocked at the conditions of the rabbit barn and the chicken barn/coop...poor little buggers never saw the light of day...sure changed my attitude about Mennonites...couldn't keep my mouth shut and had to walk away from the tour guide and the rest of the group...also on that visit I noticed children in the fields and it was explained that they were picking up rocks which they have to do once the fields are harvested and before they are planted in the spring...guess they either grow or are thrown up because of frost...:moo: MOO but as usual I have to say I am still surprised that a farmer used to odours would not have notice something...just saying...

not sure I understand what you mean by "farmers nose" being as I am a city gal ha... but having said that I would think that being a farmer and used to slaughtering animals he would notice an odour of decay...just saying... and JMO

People in the area are used to the smell of a dead animal, very often you find them in the ditches along the sideroads, etc. If he did smell something, he could have thought it was a dead animal somewhere. I have no idea if the smell is different of a human compared to an animal. Anyone know?

Farmers don't usually slaughter animals themselves...in fact I think that is illegal. They would have a truck come pick them up and take them to a slaughtering plant such as that MTR worked at!

Wild animals kill each other. I don't think a farmer would give the odour of decay a second thought. There are probably coyotes in the area. We don't know what we had in our attic last year and it was barely tolerable, i.e. squirrel, bird, mouse. MOO

@cbcsteve shocked defence let that fact slip through their notice, considering they bring clothes for client! #Rafferty #ToriStafford

Derstine has no objection to Pollanen being an expert witness. Expert witnesses can give opinion evidence, Heeney reminds the jury.

Crown enters Dr. Pollanen's curriculum vitae. J. Heeney tells jury an expert witness can give opinion evidence

He also has done a lot of work internationally, including forensic pathology during the Haiti earthquake

Pollanen performed autopsy on Tori Stafford on July 20, 2009. Was at crime scene day before

Pollanen performed an autopsy on Tori in Julyof 2009.

Heeney qualifies Dr. Pollanen as an expert witness. Crown can now ask for his expert opinion in court

Ya, many farmer's :twocents: know every inch of their land and notice EVERYTHING. Sad about the animals being kept in such a state. One of my family members keeps a daily almanac so that you can go back to any day of the year from any year and know what the weather was that day, was their snow on the ground, was their buds on the trees, or any other important thing about that day re the farm.

Heeney telling jurors there is an agreed fact between the legal teams. Which means no proof is nessecary. Carnegie reading the fact.

Pollanen performed autopsy on Tori Stafford on July 20, 2009. Was at crime scene day before.

Dental records used to positively identify remains of Tori

Both sides agree that the body found south of Mount Forest on July 19th, 2009 was that of Victoria Stafford.
