Tsunami Warning for Hawaii after 8.7M earthquake hits Russia; evacuation zones in place

Yes, but I read that it was shallow (12 miles deep). I lived through the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. Here is the difference between them Hard to wrap your heads around it!

It should be pretty accurate as that tool is on the USGS site: "How Much Bigger…?" Calculator

Yes, because the Richter magnitude scale is logarithmic.

A lot depends on the area, too. The Spitak earthquake of December 7, 1988, was about 6.9, but it was in densely populated mountainous area so the amount of deaths was close to 25000. The Mexico earthquake of 1985 claimed over 5000 lives.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines issued the following statement:

“We are monitoring a tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands and portions of the state of Alaska and assessing our flight operations. We are holding flight departures to the Islands on Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

“As a safety precaution, flights en route to Hawai‘i are returning to the mainland or diverting as needed. Guests with travel to, from or within the Hawaiian Islands should check the status of their flight before heading to the airport. We are monitoring airport conditions with government agencies and could see operational impacts. A waiver is in place allowing guests to adjust their travel plans. More information can be found on alaskaair.com.”

In Hawaii? Or California?

Technically, could be all of it. Too many faults.

My favorite one at Taipei 101. A mass damper that prevents the high tower from swaying during earthquakes.

I’m on the central coast of California and got the emergency text notification, four hours ago. Also set to hit at 12:30 AM.

ETA - local news just said it has been downgraded to an advisory.

They had a similar one in 1952, that one was 8.0 and closer to the shore. This time it was 8.7 in the epicenter (in the ocean).

The largest earthquake recorded was 9.5 per Richter scale in Biobio, Chile in 1960.

The 1964 Great Alaskan Earthquake was a 9.2.
It is my favorite earthquake; sorry if that’s weird.
National Geographic had a whole issue about it back then. My Dad had years and years and years of National Geographics that my sister and I donated to our local library after his death. Except the 1964 issue about the Alaskan earthquake. I still have it. Couldn’t give that away!

Supposed to hit Hawaii about 10 minutes from right now.

And the west coast at these times:

The National Tsunami Warning Center said the tsunami, if it materializes, would reach Fort Bragg in Mendocino County at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, Crescent City in Del Norte County at 11:55 p.m., Monterey at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, San Francisco at 12:40 a.m., the Los Angeles Harbor at 1:05 a.m., Newport Beach at 1:10 a.m., and Oceanside and La Jolla at 1:15 a.m.

The tsunami’s first waves, if they arrive, would hit the Oregon coast starting around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday and in Washington state, as early as 11:35 p.m.

Keep us updated on what happens in Hawaii. We have at least an hour 1/2 before we know what happens on the West Coast. Just turned on the 10:00 news.

Interesting.

Hawaii-bound that are more than half-way there are all being diverted into Honolulu. The last few flights into Kauai, Maui, and Kailua-Kona are now beginning descent for arrival and all subsequent flights are going into Honolulu.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be a bad as it sounds and that everyone in the affected areas stays safe.

A California woman called into the local news from Kauai. They are expecting the waves to hit in a few minutes. Everyone was evacuated.
