Tsunami Warning for Hawaii after 8.7M earthquake hits Russia; evacuation zones in place

No one does. One fact to confirm that nothing bad has happened so far, though. The local government asked the Kamchadals (the inhabitants of Kamchatka) not to stay on the shore waiting for the tsunami waves. Big destructions would make people busy and such warnings would not be needed, methinks. So I assume the locals have enough time on their hands. However, everyone is afraid of the aftershocks which will likely follow.
No likely about it. Aftershocks always happen, and they've had some so big that they warrant being called an earthquake in their own right. But I get it, they are still called aftershocks since they are coming after the initial shock.

And there ya go. Orange are aftershocks for today, red is within the last hour.

They are all up and down the fault line and all in the 4's and 5's. Yesterday they had a 6.3 and a 6.9, which was bigger than the 1989 Loma Prieta I witnessed live!!!

They had a similar one in 1952, that one was 8.0 and closer to the shore. This time it was 8.7 in the epicenter (in the ocean).

The largest earthquake recorded was 9.5 per Richter scale in Biobio, Chile in 1960.

A 9.4 hit Alaska in 1964.

Certainly thinking of our WS members that may be impacted by this!

I have friends traveling in Hawaii, they had to evacuate their oceanfront condo yesterday afternoon and have now safely returned. Very grateful that it wasn't as dire as the first warnings sounded. They're used to hurricanes, which brings high winds, torrential rain, tornados, etc... - evidently this Tsunami was opposite, very little wind, misty rain and mostly a nonevent. All grateful for the alert system that got folks moving to higher ground!

I also saw this online, Oprah denying that she didn't open her private road for evacuation. Her team made a statement about that. Glad to know it was false reporting that she didn't open it - Oprah Winfrey responds to claims private road closed during Hawaii tsunami

Are you out in deeper water? How stressful! Hoping for the best for you!
Actually we were told that cruise ships in deep water, open sea are safe. They said if cruise ships are too close to shore they will move out away from the shore to be safe.

But it was definitely scary in the first moments when our phones were getting the tsunami warnings, because we didn’t know. And someone mentioned The Poseidon Adventure movie, which wasn’t helpful.

I’m on a cruise ship off the west coast and our phones blew up with tsunami warnings. One of my friends received over a dozen alerts on his phone. Mine didn’t receive that many.

Definitely everyone on this ship was talking about it.
I thought about you and your travel companions when I heard the news. Hope you arrive in SF safely and on time.

Looks like they've had 119 aftershocks 2.25 and stronger since the initial quake. Their nerves must be frazzled. :(

Looks like they've had 149 in the past 7 days. I don't have a way to see the last 2 days (it's 1 or 7), but I'm going to guess most of those 149 are in the past 2 days. JMO

I remember shortly after I moved here how unnerving I felt when I drove down the coast and saw signs like this up and down the highway. I couldn't wait to get back home (inland)!

That fault line is basically a tectonic plate boundary, part of the “Ring of Fire” that rims the Pacific. Bigger quakes are usually on plate boundaries, but not always.

The photos of the damage of that earthquake were astonishing and horrifying.

Entire plates of soil with buildings and highways were upended and lying in random situations as if something huge had erupted from the center of the earth.

After you posted, I read up on it because I saw the movie the Poseidon Adventure back in the 70's. Modern day cruise ships are built now to withstand 50 foot waves.

I grew up in Alameda and my Mom moved to East Oakland after I graduated from high school. DH is from Berkeley. Good memories! 😊
Actually, I'm over the hill. We were fine here. No damage where I live, just a very unnerving night and unable to get the updates I wanted.

Now 155 that are 4.5+. Also interesting is there are approximately 20 that hit last week (yellow) up around 1:00 on a dial (NE), and they are moving SW down the fault line.
