11)Husbands DNA should also be taken as when he arrived to IST, she was still lost.. her body was found a few days later. just as a precation. everything is possible as there is this cheating stuff in the middle of the case.

WELCOME TO WS AND WELCOME TO THIS THREAD!!!!!

We are one big happy and occasionally dysfunctional family!!!!

You raise some good questions, but you also include some misinformation and misinterpretations. I'm sure others will go through some of your questions.

On #11, I will just say, it is totally impossible that her husband was the killer.

Turkish LE has stated that based on the autopsy, she died Jan. 21 or 22, long before he was anywhere near.

And the entire time he was in Istanbul, he would have been protected by Turkish LE agents. There's no way he had any freedom of motion to be off by himself anywhere. No way at all.

Yashim confirmed just a minute ago that Turkish women would wear their wedding rings on the ring finger on the left hand. Seems like it's the same as we do in America.

 I didn't realize that Munich was walking about women in Germany...

Think if you are US Customs office in NYC: you have a single women, who made side trips to 2 European countries, traveling alone... Of course 99% of women in that scenario are not smugglers but the 2 side trips would raise more suspicion of smuggling if they found something illicit than if she just stayed in Turkey the whole time. That is why any sophisticated smuggler would not have her make those 2 side trips...nothing to raise more suspicion...

But she is a hot local girl.

That goes a long way with bored agents.

I've never been searched, but they are curt and mean with me most of the time as a white local guy.

They eat out of my wife's hand, though -- she is a hot black woman and not even an American citizen. They literally coo to her and never even ask her mean-sounding questions.

Do Turkish women who are married have the same type of tradition as we do in the US? Do they wear a traditional wedding ring, or do they show their marital status in some other fashion?

I'm not turkish but my husband is. He bought me a patterned gold band for an engagement ring and a diamond solitaire for a wedding ring. His reasoning was that the engagement is tantamount to marriage and therefore the gold band. I didn't need another ring but as I insisted he bought the diamond ring just as a present for his new wife. He said it didn't matter whether I wore them on the left or right hand.

Hi everyone .I'm a newcomer and my English is not that well.sorry for that
Also very sad for Sarai.
I have some questions in my mind maybe some revealed here before ı guess abt the husband and brother .
1)SS's plane should have landed in NJ on 22 jan .Why did husband and brother wait to come to IST until 28 JAN arriving 29 JAN.Waiting for 6 days is a very long period .He could well arrange kids to SS parents , for finding cash use credit cards, borrow from friends or even sell sth. and immediately come..Why is that delay ? His income seems enough to afford it but they got the money from the church??Why
2)Why did the police declare that husband is cooperative but not helpful?
At what point they couldnt get his help?Probably they thought he was hiding sth.some unanswered questions /blur answers maybe.
3)Those cheating messages of him and brother on INST. It may be because of something experienced in US because in my opinion if he ever knew abt a guy in IST ,he wouldnt let her go.
4)When they returned to US the press was in their housefor asking questions.
Why was there the family friend who was an old FBI agent with them?Is there a reason do know for him to be there?
5)I read somewhere here one of very early posts,on brothers INST there is a a msg saying that 'I dont like what the Holland friend said ' that was something like that. I will go back and find it.
6)They know somebody/friend from IST. Who are they exactly?
7)Why is ss's and her husband's being good Christians and their bounds with
the church so much emphasized ?Can this be because of trying to hide some
illegal matters?
All these seem somehow odd to me ..
My opinion is that they were upto make some money from SS journey by some means of making her carry drugs or sth .They had financial problems accompanying marital problems .Maybe they thouht they could save their marriage.Noone would suspect from this pretty woman and her photograhy
passion was just a cover for this.
8)Also why did the neigbors in US say that she was more nee
10)AMSerdam visit may be related to this drug scenario
11)Husbands DNA should also be taken as when he arrived to IST, she was still lost.. her body was found a few days later. just as a precation. everything is possible as there is this cheating stuff in the middle of the case.

As for Taylan guy, if they had an online affair , she would have met him as soon as she arrived. lets say in a few days for certain. But we know so far
she met him on 13 jan and 20 jan twice. Moreover we know from papers that
he comes from a good family, well educated but has no job that means he has plenty of time to see her and go out with her .

Thanks for bearing whats on my mind for weeks and my terrible Eng.
Hope the case is solved asap and may she rest in peace.

Also, they waited 5 days to report her disappearance to the police. In my opinion, that is strange.

I can't get this case out of my head. Just a few things that may or may not add anything.

First of all, a non scientific observation. About half of my friends on facebook are Turkish and half non Turkish. It's struck me in the last few days that the Turkish people on my facebook have been posting what I would call negative things about this case. Complaining about the police time and media attention the case is getting, that if it were a Turkish person it would not be the same. Claiming she was a drug mule, implying she was some sort of immoral woman for travelling alone, etc etc. This has been bothering me a lot. For other people in Turkey, would you say this is reflective of the view on the street from Turks? From where I'm standing, it seems people just aren't that bothered, which I find sad. Why does it have to seem like a competition between the USA and Turkey?

Secondly, regarding the missing ipad and phone. These will not be worth a lot in Turkey. Why? Because foreign-bought phones (or items that use SIM cards such as ipads) need to be registered. They work for a certain amount of time before the Turkish government stops them working somehow, and to reopen them, money has to be paid and they have to be registered. This requires a passport with a recent stamp showing entry to Turkey, and when you register the phone, the IMEI number is taken. Therefore, these items of Sarai's are not going to be worth very much once the signal is switched off. The wifi would still work and I suppose they could be used in other countries, but I'm imagining anyone wanting to steal to order (professional thieves) would know about this. Therefore, I'm going with the theory that others mentioned about the items being stolen due to information or photos they contained.

Thirdly, some people have mentioned that Sarai only met guys and not girls. In my opinion, this doesn't necessarily mean that she was on the look out for flings or the like. I don't use instagram but I do use facebook, couchsurfing and a few other sites like that. As a foreign woman on these sites, you get bombarded by messages from Turkish guys. Couchsurfing, for example, is a site for travellers, not a dating site. When I used to have a photo on there, I got constant messages from Turkish guys inviting me for coffee, to "show me around the city", take me to dinner, etc etc. I never got an message from a Turkish girl. It seems a high number of Turkish guys get excited about meeting foreign women but Turkish girls are not :-). Now I've been here for almost five years, I am totally aware of this over excitement (and the implications surrounding it - usually foreign = "easy"), can spot it in 2 seconds, and know how to repel this sort of attention, but when I first came here, it was different. I also have to say that I know American friends who have got into awkward situations here, mainly due to cultural differences and being open, friendly, smily, etc. Some guys here will see that behaviour as a come on, even though in American culture it is not necessarily so.

Another point I wanted to make it that some of the discussion here has made it seem as though there are crowds of homeless men hanging out in the city walls. As someone who has walked along that route (albeit not within the walls themselves) a number of times, I haven't seen any evidence of this. In fact, Istanbul doesn't seem to have a homeless problem at all in comparison to London or New York.

Last point for now - apparently Taylan said he and Sarai split the bill. A minor point maybe, but this is totally not normal behaviour from a Turkish male. Friend or lover, no respecting man would allow a guest to split the bill.

The US wouldn't necessarily know about her side trips. They weren't likely booked as an open-jaw multi-leg ticket, so she could easily book a round trip from IST to AMS and the US is none the wiser.

I think taking the side trips to see "friends" is a perfect cover. She has fun, she has people to vouch for her.

A lot of times the traffickers will pay for trips so the mules enjoy themselves and likely so they feel somewhat indebted. They also strap them down or their luggage with drugs or whatever material and then escort them to the airport. They know they are constantly being watched.

I mentioned before this could be a reasoning why she said she was single. If I was involved in nefarious things I wouldn't want my family involved.

Also, any word on what hand the wedding band is worn in Turkey? This still has me interested, too.

If her passport was stamped in Amsterdam they would see it. It was my impression someone stated about her passport being stamped in Munich and Amsterdam.

Also, on customs form they ask what countries you were in overseas. I guess you could lie, but perhaps they would want details if they became suspicious. And you would not want to be caught lying on the immigration form...you would only lie and face fines /prison if there were a reason...

Oftentimes in Europe, before I board a plane coming home, they want to know details on all places I have been. This is just for airline security I think, and I am not sure if airlines write it down.

I imagine Us customs has certain profiles they look for in mules. From popular culture, it would seem that many mules are attractive females traveling alone on multiple trips...whether that is the profile I am not sure but it seems to be IMO

Also might not have been drugs, might have been something else like gold or antiquities.

Got it. Given that she is American, though, she would wear it on her left ring finger. However, would Turkish folks recognize that?

Alright a couple images...

Did anyone notice that the strap in the lovely face pic looks like the same strap that is on the bag they took from the hotel room, but that the bags look totally different?

So to go back to the bag, if this rucksack one and possibly the braided-strap shoulder bag were found in her room, we really don't know what kind of bag she was carrying on the 21st. Gosh it would be great if they just realized one image of her that day.

We could then at least speculate if she could have been carrying money or dope for some kind of exchange. Or eliminate the likelihood if it was a microscopic bag or a little clear plastic bag that could barely fit a pair of heels...

:welcome:

Welcome - and excellent first post! All very good questions. #1 stands out to me - and not something I had considered before. Hmmm...

I do think that your scenario in # 7 is very plausible. And a possibility that I considered a while back. Not sure what I think now... My head is spinning with all the possibilities.

This has had me thinking off and on too. Originally LE was saying SS' body had been there a week to 10 days prior to being found. So could she have been alive when Steven touched down in Turkey? If one were to follow the theory that her husband had some motivation to harm her, that might be a place to start. I had discounted this in my own brain, but only because it seems like he could have found a less expensive, less mind boggling way to harm her, if he had it in mind to do so.

sarai-sierra-3_4_r536_c534.jpg

Since we're analyzing the photo, I'd like to correct someone (I'm so not going back through this thread that seems like it's been created by labrador retrievers with ADHD (and I'm one of the worst of the pups) to find who said it.) who said that Sarai had been seen wearing "costume jewelry." If the ring in this picture was what they were referring to, it does not appear to be "costume jewelry" in the sense that many people use the term, and especially not in the way artisan jewelers and metal workers use the term.

While I cannot tell the metal used by the photo, I believe the ring is hand formed. It is a modified version of a wire rose ring. My guess is it is NOT gold, due to the intense yellow color in the photo (assuming the color hasn't been tweaked) but that it is either gold plated or a base metal.

Why is this important? It might not be, but it does say something about her recent art awakening. She could be wearing any ring, but she is wear a relatively inexpensive, but handmade, ring in a very prominent spot on her hand. It is a statement piece. And it serves her burgeoning view that what is beautiful is not necessarily expensive or traditional. (Much like her photographic subjects.)

(If you're curious, the ring is somewhat like the one made in this tutorial, however, hers is made from wire that is oval and not round as well as a thicker gauge. The shape and gauge would both drastically increase the skill level needed to make the ring. http://www.julieannart.com/2012/11/wire-wrapped-rose-ring-tutorial-by.html)

Not sure if these photos of TK have been posted? if so my apologies. He's not as charming looking as the image the media are using. Is this the same guy? The link below says it's him.

Are we sure that's when cops were contacted?

The feeling I got was that since her original flight back was on the 25th, some people (maybe even LE itself) were hesitant to go pedal to the metal on her disappearance until after then. Just a feeling.

It's odd to see this bag in many photos during different times, in different places, and yet ironically it is the one found in the room. I don't see an image of her with a different bag anywhere.

Thank you. Were any of these in Turkey/A'dam? Besides the one Ammer took? I see the big ring on her right index finger here and I can't see one on her left ring finger. I small band could be there. It doesn't look like it to me but maybe we just can't see it.

Don't hit me, CMac2, but, even if SS was still alive when hubby arrived, there is no way Turkish LE let him out of their sight for even a split second.

He would have had agents on top of agents guarding him. With agents, Yashim, more agents, and secret police watching them.

There's no way he was let out of their sight. It would have been a courtesy offered for his protection, of course.

Which again begs the question, why did she go out and on the town without certain items on the 21st.

If there was a "Turkish phone", why was it left in her room?
Why leave behind her favorite bag that she always took on photo jaunts?
Would the bag she took have to be big enough for an iPad? Because she wouldn't just have it out the whole time, right?
