was just about to post, as i read the latest, that i think the random stalker/killer was a transiant and not tied to a job or business activity. i also believe the killer is the one who turned on Sarai's electronic device days after she was killed. an enraged, frantic killer probably wouldn't notice small pieces of jewelry on a dying or dead victim. that's why it was still on her, where as a bag is larger and as a thief, he'd be more hip to swipping it. anyway, lets hope they nab the right person.
Edited to add: It remains to be seen if the perp is a Turkish national. I suspect not, but we'll see.

One more thing, if LE fails to establish a bio match with Z for some reason, if he did it, he will break during interrogation. Even if he denies it, he will screw up under cross examination.

So, the purported perp is a displaced villager who is forced to rely on going through garbage for recyclables in Istanbul to exist?

This is a slightly different perspective than the alcoholic/druggie who does this for substance abuse money, and makes the purported perp (PP) sound less schizophrenic/labile.

So a robbery gone wrong is likely. SS may have had her ipad out, and the temptation was too great for Z. She fought back and sadly he didn't back down.

That footnote appears extremely political rather than a mere sociological observation. Eastern emigration to Western parts of the country is a reality and not at the greater scale, an enforced state policy.

It is true that village evacuations were the case in late 80s until mid to late 90s as a part of counterinsurgency operations going on in the area under martial law. However it was not a systematical deportation program.

When I read that the suspects initial was a Z, I tried to make a joke out of it by replacing the T in Taylan and Tarkan's names.

UPDATE FROM ISTANBUL


Istanbul Police is closing in on the perp.


LE said the main suspect is a garbage man. (Garbage men, as the name suggests, collect paper, bottles and cans out of garbage bins in order to sell to the recycling plants.)

(They are usually OK people. But some of them can be really dangerous.)

LE said his name was Z. (And a male of course.)

LE is still looking for him.

(I am thinking a Zaylan or maybe a Zarkan.)

They believe Z. first mugged Sarai and then attempted to rape. And ended up killing her in the attack.

They believe that killing took place in a nearby location and he then dumped the body in the cave.

He is 46 years old.

On the day SS went missing, he was seen covered in soil and mud. He told he had fallen off the city walls.

Just a side note: They took DNA samples from a total of 53 people. 23 are homeless and druggies.

To be fair, most of us posters did give this random stranger murderer at least .05% probability. lol

I hope they find this perp. I hope the DNA under her fingernails matches him and that his DNA wasn't accidentally transferred onto her body by some odd coincidence, and that DNA wasn't planted. Oh, and that he wasn't wearing gloves.

Or perhaps he didn't even hide the body away, he simply panicked and ran. Afterwards, another opportunistic individual of a similar background came by the body, took the purse containing electronics, hid the body into the cave.

It is even possible Z might not be alone as it is common for garbage collectors to operate in small groups.

This is a great idea except that it'd be an arduous, voluminous task for the mods/admins on WS. Every single thread of every single case have speculations that are wrong, and many innocent people have been inadvertently/intentionally slandered to some degree.

Do you think the Z refers to a surname or a first name, or does it matter?

ie: For USAnians, the surname is a family name from the father's surname which is much more linked traceable than the first name, which is given at birth and may or may not have any reference to the family?

I know in Saharan and sub-Saharan Africa, the first name may be the family name and the surname may be a given name at birth, causing confusion for us westerners.

Z will be apprehended. There is no question about it.

Turkish ID records are highly centralized and accessible to authorized organizations. Turkish citizens and even permanent residents all are assigned unique ID numbers. Every aspect of the life, including banking, social security, taxes (every possible GOV related errand) is handled through your ID number.

Except for assuming the identity of another alive person, forging ID is impossible as even running into a LE checkpoint will turn up a non matching ID and raise a red flag, getting you apprehended in the process.

If Z is a scavenger and as Yashim guessed, a native of Eastern provinces, he will be caught, sooner or later.

A profile like the scavenger does not have the resources to go completely off the grid, UBL style. He might have a strong ethnical identity and might try to get help from his tribesman, but they will be at best unwilling to aid him as they will well know he is a wanted man and LE will be relentless. He also will not be able to escape through Eastern Borders, he doesn't have the money, he most likely won't speak the language, and he is bound to make mistakes even if he manages to cross into, say, Northern Iraq.

Just from his name and surname, LE should have had his ID number by now and with that, they will also know all his blood relatives.

Only way he can evade getting apprehended is getting himself killed, commiting suicide. Even so, his body will be identified.

His days on the run are numbered.

I agree. Attempted rape and robbery. If he had merely tried to take her ipad, being a street savvy New Yorker, she would have known the safest thing to do was let him take it.

If you were guessing about Z, I'm 99.9% sure he is a Turkish national. You can't find any non national homeless or scavengers in the country, first time they run into a simple LE ID check, they'd be taken under custody and when found about their foreign nationality, be deported back to country of origin, or be placed into a refugee camp if they are from a hotspot such as Syria.
