Every time I read about posting armed guards at stores and malls, I am reminded of my daughter who, during her travels in Turkey and Bulgaria in 2001, described armed guards checking everyone entering shopping malls. Armed guards were everywhere, but that is not the USA. There must be a better solution.

My first trip to Mexico, many years ago, I was shocked to see barely-uniformed teens with automatic weapons positioned outside markets and churches. It made me really uncomfortable. When a group of armed, uniformed men stopped the bus on the way into Guatemala and had us all get off for an identity check, it seemed more like we were just being detained and scrutinized. A friend of mine traveling in eastern Europe was stopped in a similar fashion for a "routine" check and she was not permitted back on the train, her travel companions were forced to go on without her.

The only other solutions I can think of...are long term and politically impossible, IMO. People I know in parts of Europe and Latin America think we're headed in the same direction. Public resources to fight crime are already stretched, and I would label the incident in El Paso an act of domestic terrorism. MOO.

appeared frequently write about their belief in a coming race war, plus anti-immigrant, racist and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

So did Charles Manson. So did Adolf Hitler. These ideas are not new - but, they have been frequently used as cover for incredibly evil deeds. Free-floating hate attaches itself to this malignant ideology easily.

Yeah. No point or value in sweeping it under the rug.

I'm a middle-aged white women living in a city with a huge Hispanic population. I could be collateral damage any time one of these freaks take it upon themselves to do whatever delusional thing they think they're doing.
There was an ex FBI guy on Fox or CNN yesterday that said the things these shooters have in common is a base level of narcissism, few friends, frustration and a desire for attention and a “cause”. He believes the “cause” is the justification they use, and any cause they can glom on to will do the trick.

The El Paso shooter chose Hispanics. Pulse shooter attacked non-heterosexual, gender-fluid individuals. Last year’s congressional baseball shooter went after Republicans. Religious groups can obviously be targets (synogues/mosques, churches). And we still don’t know if the Vegas shooter was targeting country-music fans, music lovers, Republicans or maybe just happy people in general. We’ll never know.

The bottom line is no group is safe. There’s an alarming resurgence of Hate in this country (and others) —righteous indignation” has become socially sanctioned and encouraged in mainstream society.

IMO It is going to get worse before it gets better, as people seem increasing inclined to build relationships online instead of in person. it’s a trend particularly prevalent among teenage boys from financially secure families. I’m amazed at how many prefer to stay home online instead of going out with friends, are indifferent to getting a drivers license and have little interest in getting a job. Just a subset of course, but a much bigger subset today than in previous generations. Not a lifestyle that fosters understanding, tolerance and/or communication/conflict- resolution skills. Add violent video games to the mix and oh-boy, here we go.

There is an explanation of why there are more socially outcast kids. This is at the core of why the US has more mass shooting.

I am re-parenting a child who is currently almost 12 with a trauma and neglect history. This has led to deficits in his brain chemistry and I am working hard to NOT see a psychopath leave
As far as I know, none of the shooters have been foster kids. I've not heard any parental abuse/neglect issues, many were privileged.

Its not, ADHD meds, middle names or environmental issues at the root imo. There is something wrong with these monsters that they were born with. (again , imo).

Over here, we still interact, in kind, friendly ways, with people in places of business, and even just that we greet when we are out & and about every day. This is a choice still. Even in the age of tech.

My Daughter is young teen, she's a Computer Native, grew up with internet and is very active in many supportive, loving ways. She and her friends love and support each other on and off line. They also participate in Animal Rights groups, LBGT groups.. Art, music, ect. they have many other fun, loving, healthy online internet interactions .

The internet is not the problem. Child abuse can't explain this. The guys are hardwired imo.

Oddly enough, my BIL commented that this number of people are killed by gun violence in Chicago each week. No one even acknowledges this.
9 Killed, 39 Wounded In Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

One of the big differences in Chicago is that most murders are committed by a person known to the victim, not random. And most of the murders happen in areas of the city known for drug dealing and high crime. If you go into those areas you should expect to be in danger. If you go to the shopping mall or out to a country western bar and sit on the patio in safe areas you should not expect to be in danger.

I saw the video of the women frantically searching for news about her mother, Angie Engilsbee, yesterday. It saddens me that as of about 6 hrs. ago the family still had no news about her. Angie was in the check-out line around the time of the shooting according to this news report. I wonder why it is taking so long for the families to be notified. Praying for all of the families and people affected by this horrible tragedy.

Sorry this will be petty.
But I hope everyone on this monsters case from his defence team to the judge and prosecutors all be Hispanic.

Not at all.. saying ‘Hispanic invasion of Texas’ is a specious argument. Until 1848 Texas was part of Mexico. It was Spanish Colonial territory from mid-1500s until 1823. More like the other way around..European invasion of Hispanic territory.

In his book ‘Guns, Germs, and Steel’ Jared Diamond considers what would have happened had the First Nations of the Americas not suffered depredation: they would be defending North, Central and South America and the Caribbean against illegal immigrants since 1492.

These guys can reach out to any soul on the internet and poison them,” he said. "It's digital hate."

Its just hate. Its organic hate. They would spread this hate in other ways if their was no intenet. Maybe not as fast, or wide, but the internet is not the problem.

It’s so odd to me when these shooters state they have hatred towards a particular race and then kill indiscriminately, shooting at all people of all races. Like how does that make sense whatsoever? Not that anything they believe makes any sense anyway. But wow.

Do we know yet the races of the deceased in El Paso? I know that in Dayton, all but one of the deceased are black. Not sure if that is related to a motive yet or not, we should find out more in a few hours

By looking at Snapchat videos of that night, the majority of the people in that area were African American, so it may just be more of that particular race in that particular area. But not sure as to motive either

The mother that was killed was white. Hence what spurred my post.

PC so far

Shooter has been cooperative
Domestic terrorism will be pursued
Firearm purchased legally, but they do not know where yet
Little pansy when he has no gun. I am so over this. I want to leave the US, but I have to convince DH and children.

That is the scariest thing. I remember the mass shooting in Las Vegas, and hoped that my family was okay. So scary.

I believe it's part of the problem. Access to things and people is easier today because of the internet. People can find out anything about anybody if they tried hard (criminal or not). People can influence others in ways not imaginable. Overall I believe there are more negatives than positives because the ease at which one can do harm today is much easier.

Sadly, one of the unintended consequences...
