Human remains found in North Side near search area for missing mom | KTSA
[...]

A man walking on his friend’s private property off of Specht Road discovered the bones and called the sheriff’s office around 7:30 Thursday night.

“Deputies came out and verified that they were in fact human remains consisting of a skull and several bones that were scattered around,” said Sheriff Javier Salazar.

[...]

His deputies had been up and down that road on horseback last March after McDonald’s disappearance, but the remains found Thursday were on private property behind a gate about 20 miles from the road. He says there are several sun-bleached bones that may have been scattered around by animals.

[...]

It usually takes awhile to identify skeletal remains, but Salazar says it shouldn’t take long to determine if they are those of Andreen McDonald.

“With Andreen, we do have dental records,” he said.

[...]

Wow, I wasn't thinking the remains would be found that far from the road. 20 miles?

I almost dare not mention it but in an abundance of caution that it might not be her, this area where the bones were found is the same area known at least one suicide victim whose case we also followed here on WS.

I think that was a mistake. This article says 20 yards which sounds more reasonable to me. Hoping this is Andreen.

Human Remains Located in Andreen McDonald Search Area

“It was off the beaten path. This is a very desolate road to begin with, but then you add to that the remains were found about 20 yards deep on private property behind a fence and gate,” Salazar said. “It’s not a very accessible area. Someone would have to be looking for a spot.”

Thanks, that sounds much more likely.

Definitely a mistake and thank you for correcting it. It's too late to edit my post or I would delete that sentence. MOO

Just catching up with the news here. I pray this is her. While I would rather have hope she is alive, in this case, I think we knew it was unlikely and the next best thing would be to find her so she can be laid to rest by her family and to put this miserable excuse of a husband and father back behind bars and keep him there this time.

After discovery of skull and bones, friends of missing San Antonio woman express hope, shock
[...]

Thirty to 40 deputies with the assistance of the FBI and other state agencies continued to comb the area Friday with the assistance of drones. They also were photographing the evidence.

So far, searchers have not discovered any other personal belongings, such as clothing.

Salazar said he hopes to collect the bones Friday afternoon after the medical examiner says it’s OK.

[...]

FT, a local volunteer who helps families organize search groups for missing persons, said the condition of the bones leads him to believe that they don’t belong to McDonald.

“If the bones are sun-bleached, that indicates that they have been out in the sun for much longer, perhaps two or three years,” said FT, who has conducted dozens of searches over the last 20 years. “That doesn’t make sense. We’ve had a very wet June and July.”

[...]

NB, whose sister lived at one of McDonald’s assisted-living homes, cried Friday morning as she talked about McDonald, whom she described as a beautiful woman who “made a difference in the world.”

“(I’m) very emotional right now,” she said while just feet away from where the discovery was made. “You want it to be her and you don’t want it to be her. But at this point,we want justice.”

Specht Road, San Antonio is right by Camp Bullis Military Reservation, according to Microsoft Maps (I don't know how to link it, it's just an app):

Google maps doesn't label the miliary land but here's the google maps with link:

Search group hopeful remains found in north Bexar County belong to Andreen McDonald
[..]

RG is one of the members of Chain Breakers. The group has performed more than 150 searches, most of which were close to the area where the remains were discovered.

Members of the group hope the remains found are those of McDonald.

[...]

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar hopes that with the use of McDonald's dental records, investigators will be able to determine if the remains belong to her in a couple of days, once the body is removed from the scene.

[...]

Texas State University anthropologist Daniel Wescott said bleaching of bones would indicate exposure to the sun. He said bones are more of a yellowish color, but that can change quickly given the right conditions in the Texas heat, even in a matter of weeks.

[...]

RG and his group had already planned on performing a search Saturday, and they'll continue to do so because they can't waste any time if the remains don't belong to McDonald.

[...]

The group asks that landowners go out and search the properties they own when people are reported missing near them.

Waiting for answers: BCSO working to identify bones found scattered in North Bexar County
[...]

FT, one of the local search volunteers who has been following the case since March, has also been a resource for other families with missing loved ones for more than 20 years.

[...]

Trevino said he's also been answering calls from other families, holding onto to hope that this could be their missing loved one.

[...]

He said at least 20 cases he's worked on in recent years could fit this case, but with more questions than answers, the remains could be anyone.

"I've wondered. I've called it too soon and I was wrong, and sometimes officials can be wrong too," Trevino said. "It does give people false hope and so it sort of brings to light that when things like this do happen names should be kept out until verification is made."

So sad for the families that are left waiting and hoping for their lost loved ones to one day be identified.

So some people are saying the bones could have been bleached from the sun pretty quickly and some are saying it would probably take longer.
I think it’s quite possible this is Andreen mainly due to where it is. This is around the original search area, Camp Bullis (where his phone pinged, right?) and not too far from their home.
It’s mind boggling to me how many times remains turn out to be someone else. How many human remains are just lying around out there!? But I feel in this case Andreen very well could have been found. I want peace for her and her loved ones.

I'm putting my faith in the anthropologist's opinion that the bleaching could occur in weeks. I'm also hoping identification is made in the coming week. MOO

Ummm... this is approx a 10 minute drive from Andreen's home... praying they found her, so that the criminal (sorry had to delete words that are not so lady-like) in this case can be held accountable for his actions, finally. Justice for Andreen and her daughter!!!

I became discouraged when I read someone thought they were too bleached to be her bones, then I read the opposite opinion.

It will never feel right wishing for remains to be found as it erases all hope but in this case, I do hope this is her because I think there just comes a point in some cases when it is fairly obvious the person is likely deceased and LE said as much in this case quite awhile back if I recall correctly.

I too am flabbergasted by some cases in how many bodies are found that end up not being the deceased and this is one of them. How many bodies are laying around that area unclaimed?

I want this man back in jail and then prison. I want whatever solace finding her may bring to Andreen's family. I do not include the person living with him in that statement...

True that it doesn’t feel right thinking this way but she’s never been seen as other than an excellent and attentive mother so I’m certain we’ve all suspected he murdered her

I have now read it. Thank God he is back behind bars and charged with her murder.

I am so sorry for Andreen's family and yet am glad they can lay her to rest and see him where he belongs. Very bittersweet.

I don’t pray often BUT OH MY GOODNESS UNIVERSE THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I’m elated.
I couldn’t believe when his bail was reduced and he was able to post...
I so so hope that Andreen’s daughter can get so much emotional and mental health care and support after this, and I hope she can remember her mother so fondly and happily.
I can’t imagine how her family feels, but I hope the bit of justice helps them heal just a little.
