Boy who disappeared 11 years ago arrested, charged in father's shooting death

A boy taken from Houston considered missing by family is in jail for manslaughter in Baton Rouge, La.

The now-17-year-old is accused of fatally shooting his father.

Anthony Templet was 5 years old and with his dad Burt when family in Houston last saw him.

One decade later, authorities in Baton Rouge found them. Anthony shot Burt, investigators said. His sister told CBS affiliate WAFB the teen’s mugshot tells only part of a violent story that started in Houston.

“After 11 years of waiting to hear if my brother was alive, he is found,” said Natasha, the sister, according to WAFB. “He has been secluded and abused all these years by his own father. My brave brother had to defend himself for the last time against that evil man.”

Between 2001 and 2002, officers charged Burt Templet with assault three times, according to court records. A judge dismissed two cases.

Five years later, Templet’s ex-wife filed for a protective order. Within two months, family in Houston saw Anthony for the last time. He was with his dad in Burt’s red Silverado.

Weeks later, Burt Templet’s ex-wife file a custody case that was transferred to another district. It was eventually dismissed, according to court records.

After the shooting, Anthony Templet claimed his dad got drunk and started a fight, according to East Baton Rouge Sheriff deputies. The teen grabbed two handguns, in case one failed to fire, investigators said. Anthony shot his father three times then called 911.

Burt Templet died from his injuries days later.

For now, the charge against Anthony Templet is manslaughter. However, a grand jury could choose to upgrade the charge to murder or decide it was self-defense and let him go free, said East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore.
That decision could take months.

The family of a teen accused of killing his father say the dad kidnapped and hid him for 11 years

July 26, 2019

"The family of a 17-year-old who shot and killed his father last month says the boy had been kidnapped by his dad when he was just 5 years old and that they didn't know where he was until he was arrested....

On Wednesday, Templet's half-sister, Natasha, spoke to WAFB, revealing that her brother had been kidnapped by his father 11 years ago and that neither she nor her mother had seen him since....

She said they didn't know where Burt was keeping Anthony until the teen was arrested.

"After 11 years of waiting to hear if my brother was still alive, he is found," Natasha told WAFB. "He has been secluded and abused all these years by his own father. My brave brother had to defend himself for the last time against that evil man."...

"I can only imagine what Anthony's been through. When he was a baby, Burt would hold him in his arms while abusing my mother," she told WAFB....

While Anthony is currently charged with manslaughter, a grand jury could choose to upgrade the charge to murder or decide that he acted in self-defense and drop the charges, East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore told KHOU. That decision could take months."

Was this kid on official missing lists?
I don’t believe that he was:

Natasha said she and her mother, knowing Burt Templet has parents living in Baton Rouge, posted missing boy flyers around Baton Rouge eleven years ago.

The ‘missing boy’ posters had photos of both Anthony and Burt on it along with a phone number for a sheriff’s office in Houston.

WAFB has contacted the sheriff’s office in Texas that the family says was investigating the missing child’s case to get more information.

There was no missing person report for Anthony listed with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office said Monday.” (BBM)

Was Anthony going to school? Was he living a somewhat normal life? Did he go by his real name?
Poor kid. This is sad.
All I was able to find about Anthony’s life up to his arrest:
“Neighbors say Burt Templet was very secretive about his son, Anthony, and told them the boy was home-schooled.

In recent months, the teen had started a job at a local plant nursery, neighbors say.” (BBM)

According to his attorney:
“[SBM]

Attorney Jarrett Ambeau said Anthony Templet's father, Burt Templet, had for years isolated the boy from other family members, did not allow him to attend school and often physically abused him.

[SBM]

In November, his wife filed a temporary restraining order against him after a particularly violent episode where her lip was busted open and her teeth damaged.

[SBM]

She wrote that Burt Templet had also punched her son in the head during a prior event; however, she did not mention Anthony Templet.

Burt Templet's wife later dropped the case against him in January.

Ambeau also said Anthony Templet's mother, who lives in Texas, has not been in contact with him for more than a decade since he had moved with Burt Templet against her wishes. Family court records in Baton Rouge show a custody case for the child in 2007; however, it's unclear from those records exactly how the case was settled.

[SBM]

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore III said he has received multiple calls about the case and about possible mitigating factors, like abuse or neglect, which are weighed more heavily in cases where the defendant is under the age of 18. However, Moore said his office has not been able to corroborate such allegations.

Moore did note that Anthony Templet was arrested on a count of manslaughter, a less serious charge than second- or first-degree murder.

‘Something's going on,’ Moore said. He said his office remains open to any information relevant to the case.

So not exactly a normal life, IMO :(

Baton Rouge teen accused of killing father now faces second-degree murder charge

AUG 7, 2019

"A Baton Rouge teenager accused of killing his father was indicted Wednesday on second-degree murder — a more serious charge than the manslaughter count on which he was arrested in June....

Templet's attorney, Jarrett Ambeau, has alleged an extensive history of child abuse, which he said could become central to the case. He said Burt Templet had for years isolated his son from other family members, forbid him to attend school and often physically abused him.

Ambeau said Wednesday his client has been "grossly overcharged." The teen was arrested on one count of manslaughter in June. ...

Ambeau said he's worried the grand jury received limited information about the crime from prosecutors and therefore was unable to make an informed decision. Grand jury proceedings are confidential. ...

District Attorney Hillar Moore III said he has received multiple calls about possible mitigating factors in the case against Anthony Templet, like abuse or neglect, but his office had not been able to corroborate such allegations. He said the grand jury was presented with all the evidence that has surfaced in the case and decided that second-degree murder was the appropriate charge. ...

Moore said his office will continue to review evidence and could ask the grand jury to reconsider its indictment in the future based on new revelations. "

Baton Rouge teen pleads not guilty to shooting father; faces second-degree murder charge

AUG 26, 2019

"A Baton Rouge teenager accused of fatally shooting his father during an argument in their Shenandoah home on June 3 pleaded not guilty Monday to second-degree murder.

Anthony Templet, 17, was arrested on a manslaughter count after the shooting death of Burt Templet but was indicted earlier this month on the more serious murder charge.

Templet is currently being held at a juvenile facility in Lake Providence, but will be transferred to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison when he turns 18 on Sept. 13, prosecutors and defense lawyers said in court Monday....

A second-degree murder conviction could carry a sentence of life in prison without parole for the teen. Manslaughter is punishable by up to 40 years behind bars.

Templet's next court date is Nov. 5...."

I don't understand why they would overcharge him like this. I hope they reconsider.

That’s ridiculous. There’s a documented history of violence by this man that supports his story. So because he didn’t videotape the abuse first he’s screwed?

I am partially commenting to keep this thread up-front. I can't understand why this boy is still in custody. At the very least, there is a good-faith basis for self-defense, based on the boy's statements, plus the fact that he was isolated for years, and that the father was abusive enough to cause recent, serious, physical harm (loose/knocked out teeth, "busted" lip) to his wife. I see he has an attorney, likely a public defender, who did make the "overcharged" statement, but why hasn't there been a bail or bond hearing? I'm an attorney (civil) and unless there are serious facts I don't know about (and there is almost no media coverage on this- why?!?), I can't for the life of me figure out why he is in jail (and Fotis Dulos is not!). I probably answered my own question, money.
