I am possibly the only poster who is staunchly against the DP, and that includes him, nobody has the right to take a life and that includes him, he did so and is therefore on trial and will be punished,

state sanctioned murder is abhorrent to me
You're not alone, I agree with you. I think a whole life stuck in prison is a bigger punishment for him than a relatively peaceful death anyway. It's not like he's going to have it easy in there.

Maybe martial arts should be taught as PE in elementary schools.
Yes, great idea but I don’t think it would help here. She was a 67lb child up against a 250lb monster.

Yes, Cherish. Shaniya Davis and Cupcake, too.

The people who hurt them should never be free. They forfeited their membership in the human race.

MOO
Add Jessica Lunsford to that horrible list (kidnapped from bed by neighbor and buried alive).

There’s nothing the defense will be able to do, it’s his right but he’s an absolute monster and thankfully the video and audio weren’t deleted.

Like others have said this case is extremely upsetting I have a daughter around the same age, it’s not a consolation to the parents but at least he won’t do it again (I’m not convinced he hasn’t done it before).

Hopefully technology keeps capturing these killers, a lot of unsolved Johnny Gosch cases in the past

I'm against it too, and am very glad to have never lived in a country which has the DP in modern times.

I see it as a Texan issue in this particular case. Partially because it’s absolutely proven, which is not always the case - which is one of the reasons I'm glad my countries don't have the DP anymore, no state killing the wrong person in my name, bad enough that some people are wrongly imprisoned for decades.

it’s the whole death row experience that’s part of the punishment though. Decades of solitary confinement with only 1 hour outside a cell. Nobody to play cards and pass the time with. Limited visits behind layers of plexiglass- can’t hug his kid. This loser would do just fine in prison- he’d love chatting all day with the other chomos and not have to stress about anything. If he could be hung in the public square I’m down with that.

There's nothing wrong with that. I feel the same but at the same time I don't care whatsoever about the people like this guy who clearly did the crime. Timothy McVeigh was another one that got a sarcastic "oops, sorry about that" from me.

Separated for 60 years.
No contact. No answers.
Until a cold case changed everything.

In 1971, a young woman was found barely alive in a quiet Maryland field with no ID, and no witnesses. Succumbing to her injuries, her case went cold.

For 54 years, her identity remained unknown, until advances in forensic DNA and a determined investigation finally uncovered the truth, revealing a family torn apart for decades and reunited two siblings who had not seen each other in 60 years.

In Episode 2 of Trace Identity, a new series from Othram Studios, we explore how DNA can transform uncertainty into identity and change lives in ways no one expects.

I am not "victim" blaming, but I don't understand why Athena was going to visit her father that weekend, and he was gone on a hunting trip? Leaving the stepmother in charge of Athena. It is like, he wasn't even there to be with her that weekend. It doesn't make any sense.

I believe her stepmom testified that Athena's mom was sick, which is why Athena was there for that weekend.

Athena's parents had, by all appearances, a balanced and mutual parenting agreement. Not tinged with acrimony like we might expect, and although Athena's dad's marriage didn't survive, all three parents appear as of one mind, against one enemy.

Athena's daddy sadly will beat himself mercilessly for things he didn't know, didn't do, couldn't have known, couldn't have done.

I don't think we need to add tension or question to blame the hasn't been raised. Like I said, I'm sure they all blame themselves, more themselves than each other, remarkably.

This is such a brutal crime. A thousand times deliveries were made to that addresses without so much as a suggestion of crime. In fact, if there was risk at all, it would have been in getting hit by vehicle. Omen that it almost did happen, hence Athena's dad's caution to her, to look out for vehicles for that very reason.

And thousand upon thousands upon millions of deliveries made, completed without incidence. Protecting your children from the Fed Ex guy? Whose radar was that even on? Not then, it is now.

I'm sure her daddy wishes he hadn't left but that's no guarantee TH would have known or been deterred.

It isn't possible for even the most helicopters parent to keep eyes on a child at all times. School, a run to the mailbox or bus. The Scouts, a park, daycare, babysitters, relatives.

It's just a devastating reminder here that, for all the places children spend their time, even in their own homes/yards, they aren't safe. Because TannerHorners exist and prey.

only EVER one person to blame and he's plead guilty already - nobody else should recriminate with themselves over anything here

I don't think she was visiting. She attended school in Paradise. She lived in Paradise. With her father and stepmother. She had half siblings in that home I believe. When Athena's stepmother testified it was very clear to me that she adored Athena just as much as Athena's mommy did. She was a child blessed with a lot of love. She had a sissy at her mommy's house and a couple at her daddy's if I am not mistaken.

I think November 30, 2022 fell on a Wednesday. The week after Thanksgiving. I believe she had just recently returned from a visit with her biological mother.

Athena’s mom testified it was to be a short visit because there was a Christmas light show of some sort Athena wanted to see.

while killing seven-year-old Athena Strand
in back of his truck after abducting her."

I am sure they have already decided. That being said, the defense has an opportunity to present the affirmative defense with expert witnesses, others, maybe even TH himself. To give evidence why TH should not be given the DP.

Who knows how much evidence they will present? Maybe a full day? A few days? Half a day?

TH. Beyond belief. That anyone can be so lacking in humanity. A true psychopath.

FORT WORTH, Texas - The sentencing trial for Tanner Horner will resume on Wednesday, with the defense working to spare his life following the murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand in Wise County.

An eye for an eye.
Make his death as horrendous as dear little Athena’s.
