TX - Austin Metcalf - 17 - fatally stabbed at track meet, 2 April 2025

This is horrific and senseless, yet I am already seeing posts on social media actually DEFENDING and PRAYING for he murderer, saying that Austin should have just "minded his business." One in particular was infuriating to read.
Oh how horrible. If the victim should have 'minded his business', so should the killer. What in the world is going on in people's minds nowadays?

Bolded by me: IMOO absolutely not. You bring a knife to a track meeting for what?? Then sit in the wrong area, where you are not welcomed, for what?? IMOO he was there looking for trouble and self defense is an absolute no in this situation, "touch me and find out" - really? WOW. He killed a kid. He should be locked up for a long time, imoo etc
I agree, this wasn't self defense. Self defense requires a use of force because it was needed and the force used should be commensurate to the perceived threat of harm.

Self-defense may be claimed in certain circumstances, including:
  • The individual used only the level of force needed to defend themselves
  • The individual needed to use force to stop someone else’s illegal violence
  • The person didn’t goad or prompt the other party to use force
  • The individual wasn’t in the process of performing criminal activities or committing a criminal act
Understanding Your Right to Defend Yourself in Texas.

I think he is going to have difficulty with the bolded by me.

ETA in case anyone took my previous post to mean I was defending the accused. I wasn't, I was simply quoting a news article. Doesn't indicate I agreed with the quoted text.

This was cold blooded murder, straight up. The punishment should fit the crime, 100%.
Hoping that it will.

As a side note, the murder occurred in Collin County.

As opposed to Dallas county, violence is rare there. The crime will not fade into the statistical background. Over worked prosecutors with a clogged court system are not likely to offer attractive plea bargains.

In short, wrong crime at the wrong place (youth sporting event attended by many instead of say, wild party attended by a few), and in the wrong county.

"Wrong spot" may need to explaining to those not from the USA.

With violence in mind, parents from opposing teams in many school sports here are told to sit in separate designated sections, or on the other side of the stadium. These seating arrangements are near mandatory and police will look for, and question parents who violate these seating norms.

The student with the knife was sitting under the other team's tent type of "wrong spot".

As with stadium seating norms, a male especially (higher statistics for problems) sitting under another teams tent with out being welcomed would be seen by many coaches as potentially provocative in a country where violence can happen fast.

Even with being welcomed the unusual seating would probably have been noted by alert coaches. The student would likely then be told just to not violate the seating norms (there for reasons) even with good intentions.

In short..... the "wrong spot" was a spot where all participants know that sitting in that type of "wrong spot" is frowned upon given the potential for problems. The level of frowning can vary by area. For better or for worse, it is very frowned upon in my area.
It’s very different in my area. We have large public high schools with diverse class and ethnicity. My kids’ track team included nearly 200 kids. By the time the team captains are seniors, kids from all schools essentially know each other. I cannot imagine a kid sitting under another teams’ tent, but if they did, there would not be a major issue. Perhaps a coach would address the kid and tell him to go sit with his team, but 2 kids would not get into a verbal altercation about seating. Kids from opposing teams are all either relatively friendly and flirting/goofing off, or don’t know each other at all and keep to themselves.

In other sports, I can definitely see this type of altercation occurring, but not in track & field. The kids are too busy getting ready for their event or too tired after hanging out in the sun and wind for 8 hours. I’m surprised to hear they need to strongly enforce separation in your area. I’m certainly not in a sheltered or idyllic city by any means.

Some people have wondered if the (alleged - he hasn't been convicted yet) stabber had the twin in mind, and got the wrong person, not knowing that his target had an identical twin. Who knows, as of now?

Same here.
Why would a student, or anyone for that matter, sit in the other school's area? Even if it was a mistake, wouldn't the student realize it and move? (Maybe not, but I doubt it.)
We had a "home" side and a "visitors" side, so it was easy to see the difference WRT the students.
Maybe he sat there on purpose, for whatever reason? Anyway, he is in Big Trouble now.

And a family has lost their son.

Has anyone from a relatively unbiased source come forward and said what kind of kid the stabber was beforehand?
I'm not sure it much matters.

The fact is he brought a knife to a track meet, then took it out and killed someone with it. The deceased might've been acting like a jerk, he might've been playing a tough guy - but it sounds like you had two teen egos colliding and now 1 person is dead and the other has his life irrevocably changed and will likely spend a large chunk of it behind bars.

I've seen it discussed on other forums that the individual team tents are used for storing personal belongings during the competition.

They're not going to be sprinting about with their cell phones, wallets, and keys in their pockets, so there's practical reasons to be concerned about someone that doesn't have business there.

Yes, good point. There are many reasons for the seating norm of not sitting in other teams areas.
Fights and phones, and likely fights related to phones.

Yes, I feel that he absolutely sat there on purpose.

Not only is there the general "violation of seating norms is frowned on" guideline to keep teams separate, but many teams have small pop up tents in their school's colors. All the teams have different uniforms and some even show up with school color coordinated back packs.

So.... he very likely intentionally sat there.

My son told me that his team has had two shoving / pushing matches after "tent / area crashers" and his team mates had profanity fueled "chats" about sprint performances. So, the idea of seeking out a confrontation by sitting and waiting in the other teams area is not unknown.

Your area and track meets sound alot like Frisco. Which is why the attack is so shocking having occurred there. And like you emphasized, Track has a different ethos than other sports. Thus, adding to the shock

Some of the difference might be due to state culture. Texas takes sports seriously. Maybe more confrontation fuel due to more juiced up parents and more students who are athlete- students in their glory days and not student- athletes?

Then factor in even slight differences in our areas. Our school is over all low income, led the state in Fentanyl deaths, and has had students shot (off campus) We mostly play schools with similar problems to our own.

So....coaches are more proactive and tend to apply the "Little good happens after midnight" approach to violations of seating norms and team areas- especially with boys.

No active shooter type response. Rather, just a: "Male student(s) sitting in another teams area? They just don't need to be there. Nothing productive is likely to happen." type approach.

Likewise, as @daybreaking pointed out, there is the gear. Lower over all income in our area makes phones, ear pods, cool shoes and Nike stuff that more tempting. Thus, one more reason for the "They just do not need to be there" proactiveness.

This is a horribly sad story. I had to read a few posts to understand where Karmelo was sitting. I know at some high school games, fans of the opposing team WILL sit on the "wrong side" to agitate the other fans (with heckling players, etc). I've even seen this done at some recreation

Was Karmelo sitting there alone? Did he have previous "beef" with Austin or any other players?

I wonder if this was premediated. Why did Karmelo have a knife in his bag? Was he planning to engage in a fight with someone? Is there some social media history with these teens?

Two wrongs here, one deadly. Austin grabbing him. And Karmelo stabbing Austin. He is likely to do some hard time behind his deadly crime. MOO.

Please understand, I am in no way blaming Austin. You simply can not argue and fight with people these days. Someone is always so willing to escalate by bringing deadly weapons (guns, knives, etc) into the mix. And so many people just don't have any conflict resolution skills and are unable to appropriately regulate their emotions. :(

I am curious when he asked the police "is he going to be all right?" if he was 98% sure he was dead or if he naively thought it was not a big wound he inflicted. And I am curious if he was "troubled" or if this was the first time he ever did something like this. He bragged about being the attacker so it seems he wanted to go to jail... TX has the death penalty right? (answering my own Q: think he is 1 yr too young to get death, and it was not one of several "capitol" situations- Tarlton Law Library: Texas Death Penalty Law: Introduction)

Comments by KA’s dad -

“Everyone has already made their assumptions about my son, but he’s not what they’re making him out to be,” Andrew Anthony to The Post.
(…)
“He’s a good kid. He works two jobs. He’s an A student, has a 3.7 GPA,” the heartbroken dad said.
(…)
Anthony also extended sympathy to Miller’s family.

“I feel bad for the other parents and family, and words can’t explain how both [families] have been affected by this tragedy.”

wonder if he ducked under the closest tent when it started to rain and that is how he wound up where he was
Yes, I can see that.

There are other places to stay dry, including tunnels and in many stadiums, the areas by the concession stands are also roofed over. Subjectively, even with the rain, I still give weight that he was in another teams area.

Our area is largely low income. Though we do play Frisco schools in some sports, we usually compete against other low income schools. At many of our events, there is already enough confrontation fuel with out adding to it.

In addition to taunt drive physical confrontations from close contact, theft temptation can take hold fast. Lower income means also means that pricey shoes represent real sacrifice, not just an after thought purchase. So, more willingness to defend property- possibly to an excess.

As a result, there is a higher expectation in our district that unless one is invited, one stays out of other teams areas and away from their possessions - simply to avoid trouble. Don't want to get wet? No tent? Go to a tunnel.

Frisco probably does not take the "stay out of" idea quite to our district's level, but I would not be surprised if they have the same general expectations. And... the apparent perpetrator would have known that.
