Jury sentences man convicted in horrific case of children chained in backyard

A jury has sentenced a man found guilty for his part in a horrific child abuse case in Bexar County.

Deandre Dorch received 65 years in prison.

Last month, Dorch was convicted of two counts of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury by omission, and two counts of abandonment of a child.

After the sentencing, the adoptive mother of the two children and their sibling gave a tearful victim impact statement.

“I had a conversation with (the boy) yesterday, and told him, ‘You have to make a choice with everything — you could do good, or you could do bad. There are consequences,’” LaKenya Shaw told Dorch. “I gave him examples. It’s no different for you. Receive Jesus in your life. God still performs miracles. They (the children) are a gift to me. God bless you.”

Shaw, who will finalize the adoption of the children May 31, said after the sentencing that the children are doing “wonderful, are full of life, and are healing from their wounds,” Shaw said.

“They aren’t scared anymore,” she said. “They are safe and happy.”
