An AMBER Alert has been issued for a missing Texas teen who has not been seen since Monday morning, after leaving the Bexar County jail in San Antonio.

*****
Authorities said she is in “immediate danger,” with possible mental health concerns, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.

*****
Guerra attended a Community Bible Church convention on Saturday before her mother picked her up, San Antonio Express News reports.

Police later arrested her on a family assault charge, then released her “in the midst of a mental health episode.”

“We begged them not to take her,” her mother, Raquel Guerra, told the outlet, adding that she left her money and home behind when arrested.

*****
Briana’s father reportedly went to the jail with Briana’s medication, but the jail informed him she would be released soon. At around 1 a.m. he returned and and was told she would be released in a few hours.

Upon release at around 3 a.m., Briana vanished.

She's Matthew Guerra's sister.

Matthew was Savannah Soto's boyfriend. Both Matthew and Savannah were found murdered in his car a week after they went missing in Dec 2023. Savannah was nine months pregnant.

ugh their poor parents. First their son is murdered and now their daughter is missing (and has clearly been dealing with mental health issues).

I thought AMBER Alerts were for abductions. Is there any evidence she was abducted? Is there any discretion in releasing a 17 year old on their own? I would agree she is an At Risk person is her mental state. Wearing shorts and crocs is probably not enough clothing - even in San Antonio.

Shorts and crocs in San Antonio right now probably wouldn't be too worrisome if this is based on temperatures. I've spent a lot of time outside (my DD plays softball) and it's comfortable, at most a little chilly but not cold by any means. The highs are in the 80s and the lows are in the 60s or 70s most nights. We do have a storm system moving in this weekend that will drop the temps to the lower 70s during the day and 50s at night.

In 2023, after 7-year-old Athena Strand was kidnapped and murdered, Texas passed legislation to make changes to the state's Amber Alert system. The new law ("Athena Alert") allows an Amber Alert to be activated by a local law enforcement agency if the head of that agency believes the child is in danger, even if the Amber Alert criteria has not been verified.

New Law Makes Changes to AMBER Alert System

June 30, 2023
AUSTIN – Newly signed legislation is making changes to the existing AMBER Alert system to allow local area activation under certain conditions. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed HB 3556 into law on June 13, 2023, and the law immediately took effect.

This law has been referred to informally as the “Athena Alert” bill, in honor of seven-year-old Athena Strand, who was kidnapped and murdered in Wise County in 2022. It allows law enforcement to request activation of the AMBER Alert system even if the criteria have not been verified. However, it is important for Texans to understand that the legislation did not create a new alert, and all alert messaging will continue to be referenced as an AMBER Alert.

Under the new law, a request for an AMBER Alert may be made by a local law enforcement agency that knows a child is missing but has not verified the AMBER Alert criteria, and if the chief law enforcement officer of the local law enforcement agency believes that activation of the alert system is warranted. Under these circumstances, a local area AMBER Alert would be activated in the following areas:

  • within a 100-mile radius of the location from which the child is believed to have gone missing or the location in which the child was last seen; and
  • in all counties adjacent to the county from which the child is believed to have gone missing, or the county in which the child was last seen.
Law enforcement agencies seeking to activate a local area AMBER Alert will use the AMBER Alert Request Form, which was updated shortly after the new law took effect.

When an alert has been activated, DPS asks all Texans to pay attention to alert messages and to be observant of their surroundings. If an alert is posted either on a highway sign or information is shared in other formats such as broadcasts or social media, take time to read and digest the information. Once the description of the child, suspect or vehicle is shared, be aware of possible matches. Texans should immediately call 9-1-1 if they have information to share with law enforcement.

I'm very worried about this young lady.....
I don't know what happened leading up to her going to jail or what she was up to after she was released.
The Bexar County jail is in a rough part of town. (Fortunately, it is only about 1/4-1/2 mile from downtown.)

It also is fairly close to UTSA downtown. (In other words, close to civilization). Anyone who lives here knows this.
If anyone has visited San Antonio, the jail is west of Market Square, west of I-10 (35) on the city's near west side.

Jail is at the red pin on the left.

Supposedly someone saw her near Lackland AFB and Pearsall Park (Maybe, maybe not) Lackland is a rough area. Pearsall Park is near Lackland. Think: gangs.

Her parents live in NW Bexar County. There isn't much for a teen runaway to do in that area however. It's pretty quiet. Lackland is not near the home, but kids in gangs tend to gravitate to the area.

I wonder if this tip was due to friends she keeps or if it was just a "sighting"?
I don't trust sightings.
I would trust a tip from a friend.
Lackland is about 10 miles from the jail and you can't get there easily by walking.

Brianna is a sophmore at a charter school near 410 and Culebra.

Where would she go without a phone? I assumed she likely hitchhiked if she got a ride.
