That she was self harming and family was aware is disturbing. Unknown if they had some outside help for that.
it’s tricky, i think. we just don’t know what her mom and camila herself had tried already. we don’t know if she was in therapy, had tried different therapies, had tried different medications, was receiving help that just wasn’t helping (enough), was on a waiting list, etc. and there are limits to what you can do to protect a 19 year old. often people actually seem to do a bit better once they have decided to end their lives, so she might not have been in a situation where she would realistically get commited because she seemed like a danger to herself or others, even if her family had tried. jmo.

Family of Camila Mendoza Olmos speaks out after her body was found in a field. She is 'with the good Lord,' says relative

Also interesting - from the same article -

'Cami loves God. She loves her mommy, she loves her brother, she loves her family,' added her aunt, Nancy Olmos, with whom the family first lived in San Antonio when they moved from California 13 years ago.
'That's why we know she wouldn't hurt herself.'
SBM
Sadly love does NOT conquer all.

Sorry if this is kind of jumbled! My stepmother killed herself in 1996. she was 45. She had bipolar disorder and was manic for days. My Daddy was working on getting her committed when she disappeared. We live in Louisiana. She was found in a church parking lot in Oklahoma a week later with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. My Daddy did not keep any firearms in the house because of her condition. Unknowingly, she had purchased a gun from a neighbor. She knew no one in Oklahoma. We will never know why she went there. Because she was listed as missing and in possible danger the police in Oklahoma figured out pretty quickly it was her. You can't make sense of it, especially because of her mental illness. If she had been single and estranged from her family, maybe they wouldn't have figured it out. When I see something like this poor child it breaks my heart. Life can be so cruel. Thinking of Camila's family and I pray that they may find at least a little peace.

Is that a valid reason not to mention it if it were known, though? I rather like the idea that it wasn't until they found a body with a firearm. Then LE might have asked if anyone in the family had seen the firearm and that was when they discovered it missing. I just took a different impression from the press release, but perhaps I was wrong.

Thank you for the thought.
This entire case is lousy.

Now you are free Camilla but you’ll never know how many strangers cared for you and were hoping you’d be found
Would this have made a difference, I don’t know but I certainly wish that this bright, beautiful girl didn’t feel such depth of dispair
Wherever you are Cami I hope you are at peace
