This is an interesting move by the prosecution, to put HF out there, front and center as the trial begins. There's no question that the defense is going to try to make this trial about HF, build him up into some sort of major drug dealer who was a giant kingpin with enemies everywhere like the movies stereotypes, and invent an invisible unnamed boogeyman who was mad at HF, and hope that the jury falls for the distraction and/or gets confused. I'm guessing that the state has decided they will confront the nonsense directly, rather than let it ride in the background through innuendo that the defense might insert via its questions to other witnesses.
Make no mistake, this is going to be a tricky situation, because HF did indeed deal drugs and he really comes off as a weasel when he talks. Without the prosecutors keeping the jury focused in the right direction (as in, CM was IN EAs TRUNK, not her boyfriend's), the defense might have a clear angle to get the jury wondering. And the defense's goal will merely be to offer and look for "alternatives" that really are nonsense in relation to the evidence, hoping to be given something to work with, looking for a mistake to build a defense on. So the prosecutors will earn their money if they navigate this HF minefield properly, but imo it's definitely doable if they are careful.
