***UPDATE***

As of 10:00am on 01/21/2025, no contact has been made with Gary Joseph “PJ” Marcantel, Jr.

An extensive search was conducted of the canyon area, along with several other key areas along highways that were suspected. The Armstrong County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the assistance it received from many surrounding agencies and landowners who helped search on foot, via ATVs, with K9s, drones, via personal and professional helicopters, etc.

Our deputies and dispatchers have worked tirelessly around the clock for days to ensure information is exchanged and cell phone data is collected.

Officials say his vehicle with identification was located on HWY 207, approximately 18 to 20 miles south of Claude in Armstrong County, but he was not with the vehicle.

Is it common to call 911 for car trouble? Maybe in a weather event?

If I can use the internet correctly, it was 25 degrees and cloudy, with a 14 mph wind at the time he reportedly called 911. And from there, it only got colder with not just wind, but also pretty steady wind gusts, from 24-33 mph began around noon and lasted throughout the day/night. I wonder if there was snow on the ground? These are not good conditions for a missing person.

I wonder if he called 911 and requested assistance with his vehicle but he was just requesting assistance and saying it was his vehicle for speaking out loud purposes or couldn’t bring himself to call 911 because he needed help (mh or something) and said he needed vehicle assistance

does mh here stand for ''m*th high'' ?

If you want to post as a family member, you need to get verified. Websleuths has rules and you cannot state such things without a media source for the information. It is to protect the person missing. You can find "verified insider" information on the home page I imagine. Hope PJ is found soon, but there has been some very cold weather there. Is he from the area? That area is pretty densely populated isn't it?

I'm a member of the family, this is just what was told to me from his parents. Sorry I can't show a link or anything like that.

Here is the link to use to become a verified insider. Your personal data will be kept confidential.

Best wishes to you and your family. I hope PJ will be safely located.

**UPDATE**

January 25, 2025 at 8am.

NO unauthorized individuals or teams are allowed access to the canyon area off of HWY 207 for search purposes. This is private property only accessible with the consent of the land owners. The weather and terrain are not conducive for a public search at this time.

The Armstrong County Sheriff’s Office continues to ask for any information or tips regarding the whereabouts of
Gary Joseph “PJ” Marcantel, Jr.

What we know:

PJ was traveling alone through Claude, Texas in the early morning hours of January 18, 2025 via HWY 287 on his way from Louisiana to Colorado. He may have mistakenly taken HWY 207 South out of Claude believing he was still on HWY 287, thus ending up in the canyon area with vehicle problems and little to no cell phone service.

We were unable to obtain a solid location using cell phone pings and records, and there has been no communication with PJ since January 18th. The large-scale search was called off, but the Sheriff’s Office continues to actively investigate and run down any possible leads that come in.

The picture below on the right-hand side was taken at a gas station in Harrold, Texas around 2:28am. It shows what PJ was wearing on January 18th just hours before he left his vehicle, a gray Toyota Camry containing his belongings and identification, on the West side of HWY 207 in the canyon area approximately 18 miles South of Claude.

Gary Joseph “PJ” Marcantel, Jr. is a 38 year old white male, 5’9, approx 200lbs, muscular build, with hazel eyes and a bald head.

He was last seen wearing a green/white trucker hat, pink Magellan long-sleeved fishing shirt, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes.

If you saw PJ, spoke with him, or know anything that could be of importance, please call the Armstrong County Sheriff’s Office at 806-553-6933. Please do not call just to ask for updates on this case, as Dispatch has been overwhelmed with such calls already.

You may also submit information or tips via email to: [email protected] or by messaging me here on this Facebook page.

At this time, there is no evidence of foul play, but please note this is an ongoing investigation. Thank you for all of the information and support thus far.

If his car broke down, why did he call 911 instead of a tow truck? If someone offered him a ride, why did he leave his ID and belongings in the car?
If the area was hazardous, or he believed it to be so, he might have called 911. I once called 911 when I had a vehicle breakdown in the middle of a highway, and I had a vulnerable individual with me who couldn't have gotten to safety quickly. The dispatcher informed me that I'd done the right thing, as LE could often get a tow truck dispatched more quickly than a private individual can. Obviously, he didn't have anyone with him as far as we know, but maybe he believed there was some sort of hazardous circumstance going on. It may also have been as simple as him being able to remember the digits for 911, but not having access to any for towing companies. I couldn't tell you the numbers of any towing companies in our area- I'd have to have access to Google- but I certainly remember 911. OMO MOO

The KFDA article has a major error. They say that no unauthorized individuals or teams are prohibited from entering the canyon area -- they should have said that no unauthorized individuals or teams are allowed to enter the canyon area. There's a big difference!

The exact statement from the Sheriff's Office is:
