CNN reporting Ator was fired that morning. Had previously called 911 about his job and called the FBI both previously and that day.

The guy appeared to be having a lot of problems with his job.

In the prior weeks when he called 911 and FBI over fights at work, maybe he should have been referred to some kind of crisis counseling or something. In this case, he was sending out warning signals.

Its also a little surprising that a guy who worked driving a truck for an oil drilling company wasn't making enough money to live somewhere a little better than that old metal shack.

I think every country has their own specific problems.
Comparing countries is not going to help to solve the problem in the US.

True, we're far from being among the countries with the most homicides committed each year including killing victims in mass.

In fact our overall homicide rate has steadily declined in the past 6 years or so even though the population has grown, and more firearms are legally purhased, and legally owned no more than any other time in our history.

No matter what weapon of choice each one uses in varying countries, the weapons were just as deadly, and all of the victims just as dead by homicide.

Imo, it's always the individual mindset of each individual who decides to murder, carry it out, who makes it happen ..no matter where it takes place in the world, and it always will be.

That's why we have to find out the reasons its happening here in our own country.

My hunch is that 15 minutes was too short a time for any alert to have reached patrol officers. They just saw a truck turn left without signalling.

I am just reading this updated info! The employer and the shooter were calling 911 and the shooter made a "rambling" call to the FBI after he was fired. My first thought was that there was a BOLO leading the troopers to pull him over. A poster upthread heard a rumor that he was on the police 'radar' before the shooting began and LE was tailing him... hmm... I wonder if he flat out threatened to shoot up the employer when he was fired.

It's odd because the authorities stated that the shooter was travelling westbound on I-20 leaving Midland en route toward Odessa and he was already armed at that time... but he lived in West Odessa, west of the initial shooting point of the DPS troopers?

The logistics of this event have been so hard to grasp. TIA

FBI special agent Christopher Combs said the gunman had gone to work that day "in trouble."

The failed "background check" was for a gun, not related to his trucking license. So maybe he went to Midland to get the gun, from wherever. FBI is checking the source.

Many developed countries have policies to provide full employment for everyone who is able and of age. Make sure to provide everyone who can work with some kind of job with a living wage. If they have mental illness or personality disorder, make sure they have access to the care they need. Insecurity, inadequacy, fear of job and/or home loss, social isolation, etc. are all factors that can breed hostility and violence in some people.

There's something else driving the increase in this particular type of murder.

The relatively cheap access of assault rifles.

Used to be - back when the shooter shot up the Texas university w/a rifle - one had to be very good shot. With an AR-15 one can shoot randomly into a crowded area. It's simply easier to accomplish.

That said, our society has become much harsher - the workplaces more toxic, the standard of living expectations more likely to go unachieved. Moreover, the economic insecurity workers feel in today's companies is real, stressful and affects not only them but their families as well.

Slightly O/T, I saw the latest edition of Dateline last week. They found John Hinkley Jr’s diaries from when he was in the mental hospital for 9 months after shooting Reagan and 3 others. Wow just wow, how he was obsessed with infamy. I guess it’s common knowledge that he was beyond obsessed with Jodie Foster, but I didn’t remember that.

Hinckley is free now btw. Active in his church. They were saying how if that happened today an insanity defense wouldn’t have worked.

JMO, but he's sounding more like someone who had real mental illness, perhaps not a personality disorder. Paranoid? Maybe not always in touch with reality?
