Switching gears real quick to the "Kathy" angle:
I've seen a lot of debate about her hairline, lips, eyebrows, etc and how they match up to WCJD. But looking at the photo today, I noticed one feature that I haven't seen discussed: her toes. She has a very distinctive "Greek foot" (her toe line peaks at the second toe). In the photo, it's most noticeable on her right foot, since her left is at an odd angle to the camera.
That's a feature that time and her injuries would not have changed. If WCJD doesn't have it, it'd be a solid rule out.
I assume no one has that information handy, but surely LE would know that from the autopsy photos, and they've given out other physical descriptors, so if we asked, they might tell us.
Thoughts?

I thought about that when I first saw the photo. I've never heard of a "Greek foot", but I could see that her toes were distinctive. I haven't spoken lately with the detective, but I do know he is basically yawning at the "Kathy" angle, and saying that until we come up with a full name, he's not interested. I don't know if any photos of WCJD's feet are available.

If I get a chance to talk to him again, I'll bring it up.

I absolutely think he should not rule Kathy out unless there is a hard and concrete evidence that it is absolutely not her. If this clue was the key to getting her name back and if we missed it, then we won't find her name any soon.

Just a thought....Rusk State Hospital is about 100 miles from Huntsville. As a kid I remember news reports of escaped patients warning the public to be on the lookout. The hospital sat on top of a hill and was a huge old building that looked like it came straight out of a horror movie. When my family would travel to Houston we had to drive past it and I would always lay down in the floorboard of the car to keep from seeing it. It was built in 1883 and was a prison until 1919 when it converted to a hospital for the care of the "Negro insane." A maximum-security unit for the criminally insane was a part of the facility. Thankfully the "scary" old building no longer exists and has been replaced. TDCJ's Skyview Unit is located there. I would hate to think this young girl (or anyone else or that matter) crossed paths with an escaped or recently released patient.

Never heard of Greek feet either, but looks like I have them. I have very long, finger-like toes lol. They're longer than ''Kathy's''.

I wonder if she met the prison guy through a penpal program going through a church in Aransas Pass or Rockport.

I just wanted to clarify what I was talking about with the Greek foot thing. I also had never heard of it, I just noticed it and looked online to see if there was a name for it. It’s also called "Morton’s toe". It’s not necessarily just "long toes", but specifically when the second toe is noticeably longer than the big toe.

It’s not exactly rare, but it’s a distinctive characteristic that "Kathy" has. As a counter example, if you view the full photo (the one with both girls), you can see that the other girl (Deanne?) does NOT have it: Her longest toe is her big toe, and each subsequent toe gets progressively shorter.

If pictures of WCJD’s feet are in her file, and she has "Morton’s toe/Greek foot", it doesn’t mean Kathy and her and ARE the same person, but it would be a point in her favor.

OK, I have another question on Kathy.
Is there any way of tightening up the window of time for her picture? Right now, we have "after April", which gives us May-October. IMO, the closer in to October we can place this, the greater the chances Kathy’s our girl. If it was late April or early May, and she’s living all that time on handouts and the kindness of strangers, that’s plenty of time for the sort of nutritional problems associated with that lifestyle to manifest. And we know WCJD was described as healthy overall and having her nutritional needs met at the time of her death.
Since the kids were out school (I assume this since they’re on a week-long work trip with their step-father), can we not at least narrow the time down to June-August? Also, when the mother pulled Kathy’s picture out of the photo album, was there possibly a subsequent picture that had a known date? Like "Ok, so here’s Kathy, that was sometime after April… and here’s so-and-so’s birthday party, that was the beginning of September."

There's been suggestions that she wasn't sexually assaulted but rather assaulted with an object because the perp was impotent or female. I see it possibly that he tried to force her orally and she bit him in an attempt to escape. To me this would explain the object being used instead. It may also explain the anger and viciousness of the way he attacked her. And finally, it may explain the reason he bit her.
Just throwing other ideas out there....

I don't see it as a female perp but it does seem it could be an impotent man.

  • #2,129
maybe he isn't impotent, he just wanted to hurt her and didn't care about whether HE raped her or an object did.

I am curious where did the pic of "kathy" come from? It's lost in so many posts I can't find it now. And how was it decided she was possibly this jane doe? Also "kathy" appears to have teeth that protrude a little, does jane doe? I am saying all this bc I am really interested in how it came abt and just want someone to explain it.

We know it was after April because the brother remembers that he was 12, and she was 14. He says he had a crush on her, and knew he didn't have a chance with her because of the age difference. But because of that, his and her age were very clear in his memory.

The brother's birthday was in April, so if it had been earlier in 1980, he would have been 11.

I would say it was probably sometime between June and August, because (1) they weren't in school, and (2) they spent most of the day swimming in the pool.

The details about "Kathy" can be found in posts #1276 and #1286

I had seen the photo in the last couple of days but it suggests at the top of your link that it was obtained with some items relating to Walker Doe. That is the bit surprising to me because like Springrain has mentioned it was apparently shared with someone to find her name - so thankyou for posting the link :-)

Wow! I wonder what that means? Maybe her necklace? Or something?

The information in that blog is incorrect. There were no "items relating to WCJD" found with that photo, and the photo was taken in 1980 (sometime after April), not the mid-70's.

The photo comes from a brother and sister who were staying at a motel in Texas in 1980 (with their mother and step-father). The step father worked on radio antenna towers, and traveled around frequently, and stayed in motels in the course of his occupation. While they were at one motel (their best recollection was that it was in Beeville), they met this girl (possibly named "Cathy"), and for those few days, the sister and "Cathy" became friends and spent a lot of time swimming in the pool together and doing each other's hair. At the time, the brother and sister were 12 and 10 years old, respectively. "Cathy" told them that she was 14 years old, and a runaway from Corpus Christi. She was staying at the motel with a couple, about mid-30's in age.

Both the brother (who lives in Texas) and sister (who lives in Oregon) saw the publicity on WCJD independent of each other, and both immediately thought of "Cathy" without prompting by the other. When the sister came to Texas to visit her brother and mother, he asked if she had seen the articles on WCJD, and she immediately said yes, and that the story and drawings of WCJD reminded her of Cathy. When they asked their mother about Cathy, the mother said yes she also remembered her, and said "I even have a photo of her".

Both siblings remember that "Cathy" wore clothing similar to the clothing description of WCJD, and added that she didn't seem to have very many clothes.

There are a few other details provided by the brother that tie in even more to WCJD's narrative, but the sister says that she doesn't remember those details, so I haven't put those details out for discussion.

Here are a few more details regarding "Cathy" that I should probably add to the mix.

According to the brother (the sister doesn't remember this detail), "Cathy" told him that she had a friend who was incarcerated in the Sugarland Prison, and at one point, asked his step-father if he would give her a ride to Sugarland. Apparently, the stepfather didn't give her the ride. The stepfather drove a 1978 Ford Truck with a camper on it. However, the brother says he recalls that the couple drove a large American car, possibly a chevy, possibly maroon or brown in color. He recalls that it had a beige or white vinyl top.

Of course, if this is true, it would make "Cathy" a very strong possible for WCJD, despite that her friend was in the Sugarland prison, not at Ellis, and that the couple's vehicle was maroon or brown (as opposed to blue - as was reported to the WCSD by the owner of the gas station who saw WCJD prior to her death).

When he first told me this story, he was saying that the motel was in Richmond, and he even drew for me a diagram of the layout of the motel. There are no motels in Richmond, and after many hours searching Google maps for of the motels throughout the area, he came back to me and said that he thinks that the motel was actually in Beeville. He pointed me to the Esquire Inn on St. Mary's street in Beeville, and said that he is pretty sure that is the same motel. The sister agreed that this appeared to be the same motel, and its layout is very similar to the drawing that the brother gave me.

I've been reluctant to mention these details (1) because I wasn't sure if the brother was just repeating details that he had read in public narratives related to WCJD, and (2) his sister couldn't corroborate those details. The sister was only 10 years old at the time, so it is understandible that she wouldn't remember every detail about the few days that they knew "Cathy". But I've decided to go ahead and put it out there and let everyone decide for themselves whether it is credible or not.

Yes thank you CarlK90245. I couldn't find the pic of her either lol I'm just having trouble making the leap to the WCJD. MOO. It seems like ppl like to be a part of the narrative these days.(in reference to the brother/sister reporting), but it's hard to dismiss their claims. It's been a very long time since thy were on this vacation. But, I also respect your opinions bc you've got a solid track record and are respected in the world of Jane Doe's. I just feel like she doesn't look like WCJD not at all. All avenues are certainly worth a look though and I am NO professional. I also wonder abt the person submitting. Could they be privy to more info but in releasing that info could implicate a family member. I know that may sound over the top. I watch/read too many crime tv/books/websites lol But, seriously was that considered?

Throwing this out there ... Is it possible her friend was transferred from Sugarland to Ellis in the between time of meeting the brother and sister to Nov 80. Those inmate lists that have been bouncing around would be a wealth of information, finding specific inmates whom were transferred from Sugarland to Ellis.

The savagery of this case is very haunting ..

Or if there wasn't a transfer, it might be interesting to see how many inmates in each prison shared the same name. It could be she went to Sugarland bc she thought "X" was imprisoned there, only to find out it wasn't the right one.

I don't know if this was ever discussed in the past but it was a thought I just had.. Maybe she was not going to the prison but was using the prison as a Landmark of a smaller place that she was going to .. But the Prison would be a more famous landmark and easier to get directions to. Does anyone know of what was surrounding the prison in that area. Any other places, like private homes or apartments or something else that could of been her destination?

It seems that the prison keeps an archive of maps of the prison at the time - which may or may not include the surrounding area. Click on 'maps' at this link https://www.tsl.texas.gov/arc/appraisal/tdcj.html#25

You could always contact the records liaison listed at the top of that page and ask if they'd email you a scanned copy?

I think this is a very good idea. Idk why I didn't consider it bc it's how I describe where I live when telling a friend duh lol. Across the street apartment buidings from a major shopping mall. Makes really good sense actually. Smart thinking madamx😆thanks.
