Was he meeting someone up Salt Flat Rd to get the narcotics, but why would he do that on his way home?
Or, was he to meet someone to pass off the narcotics?
Or was he even in the car when it went up Salt Flat Rd.?
Or was he even going home.. or was that just assumed? No statement saying, he was expected at such and such time, or he said he’d be here...

Just thinking aloud...

So his wallet was in his backpack which we already knew had been found. I would think in finding the wallet in the backpack, the narcotics would have been found at the same time. So why are they deciding to report on this now vs the same time they reported his wallet being found?
If it were legally prescribed meds, what is the media’s reasoning for reporting it at all?
It sounds like a leak to me.
Not only were the narcotics not identified , neither was the quantity found. Did he just smoke a reefer after walking from the wreckage to calm his shock and they found the remains of that?
It's unfortunate if they got this whole thing incredibly wrong.

My take from the broadcast at 6 PM:

Reporter Marin Austin (of Fox 7 - Austin) reported Texas Department of Public Services (DPS) reported narcotics found 100 feet from the JL's wrecked vehicle on 12/13/20 (image of a police report in the background).

Marin also reported the keys were in the ignition, and the car doors locked.

It was not clear if she was reading from the police report image but I assume she was and/or obtained the info from the same report.

ETA: IMO, I believe the "narcotic" info is probably being reported today after the News Reporter filed FOIA for the actual 12/13 report by DPS.

Thanks Seattle.
Keys in ignition.
Doors locked.
BUT, he could easily have pushed in the back window if he had wanted access.?

There is no confusion.
It was Sheriff who was cited in Crimeonline interview yesterday.

My apologies. When you mentioned Miller and TES, I thought you meant Tim Miller.

Presence of mind to lock the car door before shutting it? Crawled out back window? Car locked with keys in it is weird to me. Staged accident? Brick on gas pedal?

I believe the reporter most likely filed FOIA on the DPS crash investigation report and is reporting what she obtained from the actual report by DPS.

We learned earlier that investigators notified the parents about the accident after finding his wallet and that was known much earlier -- probably released by LE while withholding the info about the "narcotics." MOO

But it's extremely early for a FOI, isn't it?
Active investigation etc?

I agree, however, I believe LE/media would state prescription medication as opposed to drugs.
Respectfully, I kind of think media would say whatever would get the most viewers as long as it was not factually incorrect. I’m waiting to hear what it was. I’m with dad; you’d have to be naive... but I am not willing to bet he had illegal narcotics on him. That’s just me, MOO, etc etc

No prob, the reason I asked about TES being informed is that the information would be relevant to their searches.

It's a possibility for sure, but to walk away from the stash too kinda wrecks it for me..

I wonder if the news reporter read there was a controlled substance found in the backpack and she interpreted that to be narcotics (opioids) when it could have been weed or ADHD meds.

Even though the dog tracked Jason’s scent... I think there’s a chance he was not in the car at that location and this may have been a staged scene by someone who does know his whereabouts. Law enforcement might need to go back to his last known location (apartment?) and go from there - things don’t seem right to me. Opinion and speculation only but I remain hopeful they can locate him safe and alive.

Reposting this tweet as it was not clear to me earlier today when I posted, and that JL's locked phone is currently in the possession of deputies. Apparently, at some point, the family gave it back to LE.

Items found in #JasonLandry's abandoned car weren't initially taken into evidence, and instead were turned over to the family shortly after the vehicle was found. Deputies now have his cell phone, which is locked w/a 6-digit code, making it harder to break

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Texas State student Jason Landry face hurdles as...
The search for missing Texas State University student Miller said his department simply does not have enough evidence to form a single working theory about what happened to the young man.

It's certainly possible but I believe no less than 5 dogs picked up his scent and signalled accordingly, house to pond. The pond was searched and they did not find him there.
I don't see 5 getting it wrong.
Unless it was part of an elaborate plan, but the narcotics were left to be found?
Very mixeyuppy and hard to fathom.

If it were Jason who staged it, why leave the backpack (I can see leaving the phone)? Why even bother locking the doors (repeating your question)?

If it were someone else, why leave the drugs? Maybe the backpack drugs were separate from whatever was behind the staging?

I wonder if they found any cash.

Early on, they said they had found Jason’s clothing at the scene, and most thought it likely that he was taking laundry home to do over break (or at least a change of clothes). What if it were his clothing from that day? He would seemingly have vanished into thin air.

Oh, Texas....we should talk. If I called weed a narcotic in Detroit, I’d be laughed at! But “technically” on a federal (and some states) level it’s true. There are DEA schedule classes as well.

If it was drugs, no matter what form of narcotic, would you really stock up BEFORE going home for the holidays? Was he maybe selling the drugs to fund Christmas? So many unknowns at this early stage.

I too find that a little odd. Was the car still running or did 'whomever' turn it off and leave the keys in the ignition? There would likely be fingerprints on the keys to tell us if it was Jason or someone else (unless the someone else had gloves on, IF there was even a someone else).

Although, I can attest to not thinking clearly AT ALL after getting into an accident. Maybe locking the car door was an automatic reflex?

OK, it's funny story time! lol

I went to my parents who lived in a super small town and my father drove me to the store (a really TINY place). We get out of the car and I lock my door. My father says 'Why did you do that? It won't do any good if I don't lock my side.' LOL

I'm a city girl, I always lock my doors and windows, even if I'm home. *shrug*

If they attempt the code incorrectly to many times it may be setup to wipe the phone after say 10 times. Time for a IT visit!
