If there’s a possibility he did end up in an oil tank, could he potentially have climbed up on top of the tank in hopes of looking for a road or any passing cars? I imagine that would have given him a bit better of a view, despite being in total darkness, & maybe he fell in on accident? I’d hate to think of anything awful happening to anyone, but this would be my only explanation as to how/why someone would end up in an oil tank.

That's quite plausible. I hadn't thought of that possibility. I remember some gal fell into something like a tank after climbing up to view the stars or the moon (I remember the gist, just not the details). But being put there is still an option for me.

The top of oil tanks are notoriously dangerous. Workers must be attached by a safety rope and harness. There are two types, floating roof and weak seam roof. Floating roof tanks literally float on the surface of the oil or chemical and have a rubber seal around the edges that you can fall between. Weak seam roofs are meant to blow off in case of explosion, however they are exposed to the elements for years and get significant corrosion. Some areas can be paper thin and you can go through. I worked for a petrochemical fire equipment company for many years and there is no way you would get me on top of a storage tank.

And there you have it. Not saying that’s for sure what happened to JL, but….

I’d really like to know how well they checked the tanks near the accident and where his backpack and clothes were found. I really can’t imagine him getting too far barefoot, even if he were forced or psychotic.

Wonder what would happen if you flew over tanks with heat seeking FLIR system?

I’ve been wondering about sonar. But I don’t know if there would be anything left to detect at this point. I don’t think tissue would last long in crude oil, but not sure about bone.

  • #866
At this point you would be looking for a person size hole. If he went into a tank, most likely he will not be found (as bones) until the tank is emptied for maintenance. The oil in the tanks float on a small cushion of water. Odd I know, but that's how it works.

Any idea how often they empty them?

  • #868
Sometimes years. Usually only if a leak point develops.

Last question (I think)…Do you think it’s possible that there are tanks in that area that are out of service, but would still have oil in them?

  • #870
Tanks are filled and emptied on a regular bases. In the summer the gas is pumped out for transport to service stations and the tanks are filled with fuel oil for the winter. The first clue might happen if bones are found in a filter housing cleanout.

You are all so knowledgeable - I have never heard about tanks in the middle of nowhere and in a I believe residential area!
Has anybody heard about the reward ? And was there any activity yet?

I have not heard anything in regards to the reward. The only thing I heard was they softened the wording after getting some 'constructive criticism' over the wording. (Legalese) Some thought it might scare some potential tipsters from coming forth.

Thank you for your reply- I believe there isn’t anybody who has Jason, otherwise we would have heard something by now!

When LE has located and investigated ALL local meth labs within 30-40 miles of Luling and SFR, I think they will have uncovered the clues they need to help them determine what happened to JL that might. Jmo. A young volunteer firefighter and his teenage cousin were shot and killed while checking out smoke coming from a building that they believed might house a meth lab - about 4 miles from SFR. This occurred in late May, 2020. My guess is there are still
meth labs in the area. JL could’ve stumbled across one. Jmo

Yeah. This is the case that I (and others) have brought up here. I did not know, or hear, that they were checking out the smoke of a potential meth lab. I just knew that the person who killed them thought they were aliens chasing him dressed as firefighters. It was a very sad situation.

This was addressed the first time news from the June 2020 tragic incident linked here!

I believe any talk of checking smoke of a potential meth lab attributed to social media rumors.

I recall Caldwell County LE making it clear that the 18 yr old VFF and his 16 yr old cousin were not sent out to inspect potential lethal meth lab fires.

The teen was on duty and providing (volunteer) services checking on typical, rural fires in his known, assigned area (Tenney Creek Rd).

Yes Seattle1. But my post was not about the teens.

I never suggested the VFF teen had been ‘sent out’ in search of meth labs - or that he was even acting in any official capacity. I also never suggested that the cousins were doing anything unwise or risky, or doing anything that they shouldn’t haven’t been doing. They were just operating a 4-wheeler that had a proper VFF sticker on it. Again, my post had nothing to do with the teens or what they were doing. They were innocent victims of an unbelievably tragic crime.

The reason I continue to think that the incident deserves at least some consideration in the JL missing person case is that the man who shot the teens reportedly did so because he thought (at the time) that he was being chased by aliens. This is not normal thinking. Among other causes (such as mental illness), this kind of thinking can be an indication of meth (or some other drug) - induced psychosis (recent).

While we may never know whether BH’s thinking that day was caused by meth (or some other drug) - induced psychosis (the shooting took place on a Tuesday, the arrest on Thursday), I think it is a fair question to ask. If BH’s thinking that day was due to meth (or some other drug) - induced psychosis (again, pure speculation), where did he get it? What was he doing driving around THAT particular middle-of-nowhere location (near Tenney Creek Rd, in Tilmon, TX) suffering from (possible drug-induced) psychosis - when he was from Austin/Bastrop?

Maybe he was at a friend or relative’s house, or maybe he was just out hunting. Maybe he was in that location precisely BECAUSE he was lost and suffering from mental illness. But again, I think it’s a fair question to ask: Why was he there? Looking at google earth and other maps, there literally is nothing there - and for miles. It is not a shortcut back to Austin from anywhere. Yet Tenney Creek Rd is within just a few miles of where JL’s car was later found.

Could there have been a meth lab (w/in say 10 miles) of where the shooting occurred (that was still there in December 2020)? I think it’s possible. And if (IF) there was a meth lab in the area in December 2020, could JL have somehow come across it (or somebody associated with it)? I think that’s possible too. Maybe not likely, but possible. I admit it may be grasping for straws, but sometimes it seems that’s all that’s left.

Just trying to help find JL. All pure speculation. All jmo.

Respectfully, my post was in direct response to OP quote cited above, and where there was no reference to the suspect or mental condition whatsoever.

The VVF teen was also confirmed to be on official duty when shot:

Fire officials confirmed that Manning was on duty Tuesday night, checking for smoke in the rural area.

Also, I do believe the suspect was suffering from mental illness (as evidenced by the court's response and low bail set for double murder).

Much of this discussion was previously cited/linked in the earlier threads.

Praying for family & friends daily and the recovery of Jason.

I think it’s definitely possible, and this theory should be considered for sure.
