He didn't turn onto Salt Flat Road. He failed to make a turn - and the road he stayed on then became Salt Flat Road.
I know this is from a while back, but I haven’t been on this thread for a bit.

I know that’s what we think he did, but we don’t KNOW that’s how he got onto SF Rd. for a fact. There are other ways to turn off and end up on Salt Flat besides continuing on instead of turning. I was pondering if he was maybe avoiding a train and turned off and got lost. I don’t really think this is likely though.

Was he not geolocated at those actual traffic lights with the correct right turn in very small print? Was that not the last place his cell had action?
I think he went straight on there.

I think he went straight on there.

That is correct. In fact, his digital footprint stops as soon as he crosses Hwy 183 (where the right hand turn was necessary if going home). So basically, right where Blanche Square park is. I've wondered out loud for a while now whether or not whatever happened that evening started at that park. It's also my belief that he Snapped with whomever, 5 blocks before Hwy 183/Blance Park/and where he should have turned right... and that is who he drove in the middle of the night to meet, which is why he turned Waze off. He no longer needed it at that point in time. Whomever he Snapped with probably told him to meet him at the park a few blocks further ahead.

And since everyone likely hasn't read all my previous thoughts about this, or if they did, might not remember (so I don't get asked this question as I know someone would ask! LOL)... I've gone on to say that the reason he had his fish was because he wasn't planning on going back home that night. I also believe he wasn't planning on going home that night either. His parents weren't told he was coming and he and his brother had said that they were waiting for his sister first.

I believe he was either going to hang out with whomever he was Snapping with for a quick meeting (drug deal? Or whatever his reason was for a middle of the night meeting) or spend the night (or a few days) with that person, then continuing on to a friends house in his home town. He'd stay there for a few days, THEN go to his parents house, closer to Xmas, after his sister gets there, and after letting his parents know when he should be expected. I really am not of the belief that he was headed home that evening for reasons I've stated above.

Partial timeline and source below:
  • Landry entered the City of Luling on Highway 80 at 11:24 p.m. As he went through the intersection of Hackberry Street, where Highway 80 becomes Austin Street, he stopped using the Waze app and began using the Snapchat app on his cell phone. He continued on Austin Street to the intersection with U.S. Highway 183 (Magnolia Ave.).
  • It's believed Landry continued straight through that intersection, continuing onto E. Austin. It's at this intersection where Landry's digital footprint stops.
Authorities believe Landry continued on E. Austin onto Spruce Street, which turns into Salt Flat Road.

I think it's much simpler!
I think he dropped his cell while retrieving the snapchat message.
I reckon he then pulled in, possibly to the park area in an effort to find it and he was either unable to find it or unable to retrieve it easily from the groove it was in when Kent found it several hours later.

I do not know whether he encountered anybody during that stop or not.

I think he gave up on finding it and drove into SLR to find a safe place to stop without the danger of high traffic..
OR, lost his bearings entirely and was trying to do it with instinct, an almost impossible task for someone accustomed to direction by Waze.

I don't know what caused him to speed, if he did, I don't know what caused him to crash, I don't know why he exited his vehicle while leaving the keys in the ignition unless he knew he'd need to get the keys to a recovery truck driver...
Then again, maybe a passenger entered at a stop he made after the turn..
All just circular speculation on my part.

Too many questions remain and no answers are apparently forthcoming.
That is tragic.

Kitty, I could go along with a lot of your theory except the driving down salt flat to get out of high traffic. We have to remember what time this was. It was 11:30 at night. There was no high traffic I don't think. But it could be possible that indeed happened with his phone, then he pulled into a spot to find it, maybe even a gas station, then something happened. Maybe he felt threatened and took off, or maybe he was chased?

If indeed he was smoking in the car while driving, it could indeed be hard to manage a phone and a smoke at the same time so dropping the phone becomes more likely in my mind.

I have been wondering things like that too. Like how do we know which way he really went to salt flat? Could he have got there a different way? So many questions for me.

BBM above in quote.

Gemmie, I 100% believe your thoughts too. I know we have discussed this before but I sure am curious why officials know for certain where he timed at other locations but phrase the last part of his travels as "It is believed". What makes them believe this? Was he spotted on video anywhere? Is it believed simply because of where he ended up? Do they have google GPS data yet?

Thinking of him every day.

If he'd been smoking in the car, Kent would have smelled it in the morning. Too close to Christmas! Car would be at home, it's very difficult to get the smell of weed from a vehicle... but you just gave me an idea...
Any late night car valeting shops in or around that area at all?
I don't know how much traffic is on that particular road at night, could be checked, probably, but to get to a less public area, to pull in and search for his phone again or get out for a smoke walk without fear of meeting anybody..
Anything is possible, nothing makes sense.

The article you linked kind of alludes to this. It was only after Kent Landry got there early in the morning, finding the phone in the car and the clothes on the road, that LE realized it was more than just another abandoned car and that they were in fact dealing with a potentially endangered missing person. They may have used those clothes from the road for scent, but it's not known if other items from the car (did he bring any other clothes?) were available for that too.
Wondering if anyone else clarified the clothing on the road. IIRC -The 1st person to call in his abandoned car was a volunteer firefighter, age 17. He waited until DPS arrived. DPS officer had a strong light and bodycam. He was standing near the backpack and could see the clothing further down the road. I have seen a still of the video of this. Why the clothing was left in the road, collected the next morning by his father and then turned over to LE by his father (I think after carrying it home) is an oddity in this case. It was quite cold and someone might be out there naked and hurt. They did some searching that night on nearby roads.

I believe the VF went to the nearby home where the pond was drained and looked around that property. DPS may have too. It was never confirmed the dogs hit on JL's scent vs. other people on that property that night. No resident was inside the home.

IMO It would be helpful to conduct more searches, especially recreating the dark conditions JL faced that night, assuming he walked away from the car.

But I would want to confirm that his Snapchat conversation does not preclude him being out there alone. No use searching if there is evidence that makes it unlikely he wandered off alone.

JMO & IIRC

Why would his father smell weed in the car? I can't see a reason for him checking out the inside of his car after he arrives, and less of a chance of it the next morning. What would be his reason for even going anywhere near the car? Every single time I drove to my parents house they never neared my car because there was no reason to. Why? Because I'm no longer in it. LOL I get out as soon as I arrive so there's no reason for them to come out to join me at my car. So I could have been smoking up a storm in my car and my parents would have never known.

Reportedly, KL traveled to Luling in the early AM and arrived at the storage yard where the car was towed just before it opened, and where he was able to enter the vehicle and retrieve JL's phone. This would have been only a few hours since his son was inside the car. (KL said he knew the phone was inside the car because he tracked it there with a find friend/phone app). MOO

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear with my post about why a parent would, or wouldn't smell the inside of your car. I meant if you drove to their house for a visit, not if you went missing and your dad went to check out your towed car.

For one thing it was his father's car, not his own.

Yep, I totally get that it was his fathers car. It was given to Jason (even though still in Kent's name) so he could get around. Even so I still don't think a parent is going to snoop in the car they gave to their kid when the kid comes home to visit. So I don't think the parents would have smelled pot in the car once Jason got there (had he been smoking in it). Even though it's legally Kent's car I don't see a reason he'd want to open it up and look (or sniff) inside.

Gemmie, you know Kent DID actually open the vehicle in the morning when he got there?
He had EVERY reason to open it.

  • #934
Yes, I'm aware he opened the car at the tow yard but we're talking about 2 different things here. To clear things up to make sense for folks... I'm sorry if my original post wasn't clearer. :)

You had originally said: If he'd been smoking in the car, Kent would have smelled it in the morning. Too close to Christmas! Car would be at home, it's very difficult to get the smell of weed from a vehicle...

To me I thought you were talking about his dad smelling pot in the car after Jason arrived for Xmas which is what I originally responded to (My post 929 responding to your post 927). I've been talking about the fact I don't think Jason's father was going to open the car and smell pot once Jason got there for a holiday visit. Somehow that's been confused with Jason's dad opening the car after it being in an accident.

Let me confuse it even further for you all....We still don't know he was actually going home that night. So, to me, smoking in the car is a possibility..although, we saw and heard of NO remnants of that. Not even a lighter.

I totally agree! :D That's what I've said for a while now (and most recently my Post 923). I do not think home was his destination that evening. Not in the middle of the night without letting his parents know he was coming. (not to mention he and his brother were waiting for his sister to get there first and she hadn't arrived...)

I agree. It's late evening; I don't believe that he was intending to travel to Houston to his parents home that night. He also did not intend to return to his apartment because he brought his pet fish along. He used the Waze navigation app to get to his intended destination that night. After arriving at his intended destination (Luling), he switched to the SnapChat app in order to communicate with somebody; IMO, somebody he was planning to meet ..... and that communication led to the reason that he was on SFR. There is another party involved in some way. MOO.

It seems to me that in addition to a missing person/death, there is enough circumstantial evidence of potential foul play to be able to secure the geofence warrant.

EXACTLY!!!! Been sayin' that for a while now (re: 1st paragraph).

I believe that Jason was headed to the Houston area on Dec 14 where he probably planned on crashing with a childhood friend that shared JL's passion for video games. I recall KL making reference to JL possibly waiting for his siblings to arrive in Houston before they all headed to the family home together. I don't have the Twitter link but we know that JL was traveling with a backpack full of electronics/gaming equipment. MOO

LE has shared that Jason was in fact using the Waze app that night, but is it known what address he entered into Waze? Would LE know at this point? And if so, just not sharing that info publicly?
