SAN ANTONIO -- The parents of an 8-week-old baby boy were charged with capital murder by omission Friday in connection with the death of their child.


Jose Romero Jr. and Jeanna Hernandez, both 18, are being held in the Bexar County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond each.


Police said the baby's grandfather called for an ambulance Thursday night after the couple discovered that Jose Romero III was not breathing.


When paramedics arrived at a home in the 700 block of South Bernardo, they tried to revive the baby but he died at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital.


Jose Romero III suffered a retinal hemorrhage and had bruises on his stomach, chest and back that were several days old, police said.


"To me, everything was normal," said Luciano Romero, a relative, who lives nearby.

Prosecutor Scott Simpson's message to the jury was clear: Kill a child and a stiff punishment will follow.

Jose Antonio Romero Jr., a father who was found guilty of causing serious bodily injury to his infant son, who later died, was sentenced Wednesday to 55 years in prison. The 399th District Court jury deliberated for nearly four hours.

Jurors convicted Romero, 19, in the death of his son, Jose Antonio Romero III, on Tuesday. He'll be eligible for parole in 11 years, having served two years in Bexar County Jail while awaiting trial.

Gina Hernandez, the mother of the slain 7-week-old, is scheduled to stand trial on Jan. 28.

During the trial, defense attorney Richard Silvas placed the blame for the death on the baby's mother, not on Romero
