"Her son has already asked for her" | Family continues search for mother who's been missing

[...]

According to Mendoza, on the morning of Aug. 6, Kate left her west-side home on Maria Elena, near Culebra to go to a medical appointment.

[...]

Kate's family says she has struggled with drug abuse, and was known to disappear for a day or two, but she would usually keep in contact.

"None of her friends have talked to her, none of her family. The place that she goes to and hangs around with, no one seen her, no one heard from her," said Mendoza.

*"Hopefully someone says something, knows something, even if it's something little. It may not seem important, but it might be," said Kate's mother.

The drug/burglary/resisting arrests with probation revoked last year are here for the record but what is standing out is a case filed July 22 (before she was reported missing) for custody of her child. The petitioner is her mother and the case is in the "interest of" a person who has the same name as the name tattoed on Kate's face. So I'm assuming the father of the child? Can't sleuth him per the rules, but I wonder if the custody case bears into her going missing all of a sudden? Bexar County Justice Portal

SMH. Not liking this. She has family and a son, and I'm sure her family is very worried about her.
It seems that she made it to her appointment, but that's all that is known about her whereabouts.
Apparently, she does not usually stay away very long as he has this time -- none of her friends have seen her.
Hoping for the best for her and those who love her.

The family will be hosting a BBQ plate sale on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Dragon's Sports Bar located at 1353 Bandera Road.

The plate sale will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the plates will be $12 each.

“We're trying to raise funds in efforts to try to hopefully get money together to offer rewards. So hopefully someone will come forward and speak. We do know people have been talking in the neighborhood,” said Valerie Mendoza, Kate's Mother.

What does her Mom mean by people in the neighborhood have been talking? Using the word closure makes it sound like she doesn’t think Kate is alive? Or am I misunderstanding?

Mendoza says after Kate went missing, other people were using Kate's phone which she says was not normal because Kate always had her phone. Mendoza also says stories they told her don't add up.

“Now he's telling me that he dropped her off somewhere on August 9 at 1:00 in the morning at some house by my mom's. He can't remember where and she left her phone in his car," said Mendoza.

San Antonio Police have been investigating Kate's disappearance and now Mendoza says homicide is involved.

... One of Vara’s friends said he had dropped her off at a random home on the West Side near where she lived on Aug. 9 around 1 a.m., but Vara had left her phone in his car.

“I’m like, well, why haven’t you returned it? I even asked him what she was wearing when he dropped her off, and he couldn’t even answer that to me. He would just go around in circles and say something else, and now no one can find him,” said Mendoza.

A year after 26-year-old Kate Vara was last seen, her family continues to search for answers — and justice.

On the one-year mark of her disappearance, loved ones gathered across the street from the Winnquest Inn, near Eisenhauer Road and Austin Highway, where Vara was last seen alive. They held a prayer vigil and balloon release in her honor.

Exactly one year after Vara was reported missing, her family says they have to rely on home videos and pictures to honor her memory while they continue searching for her.

“We do hope to conduct another search soon,” Mendoza said. “It is in the works. We’re hoping it doesn’t lead to that. We’re hoping someone has a heart. We’re hoping someone has the compassion to come forward so we can bring her home.”

Homicide detectives fear Vara may no longer be alive. Mendoza says this vigil does not mark the end of her daughter’s story.
“I’m just going to keep searching,” Mendoza said. “We’re just going to continue searching. Bringing awareness, putting out flyers. Looking however long it takes for me to bring her home. I’m going to bring her home. Because at the end of the day, her son needs that.”
