The Jasper County Sheriff's Office needs help finding a mother of 4 who has been missing for nearly a year.

Sheriff Mitchel Newman says 57-year-old Kay McCoy was first reported missing last October.

A red flag was raised when The Department of Family and Protective Services called the Sheriff's office concerned about McCoy's whereabouts because she has a mentally handicapped daughter staying at a living center in Lufkin.

Shortly after that McCoy's bank alerting the Sheriff's office that McCoy's accounts had not been used in months.

Cadaver dogs were brought out to McCoy's house Tuesday to search for a body but nothing was found.

Newman says they will continue questioning McCoy's family, but says no family members seem to know where she might be. Newman also added that no family members seem concerned about her disappearance.

Deputies started contacting McCoy's family members, and began learning a few interesting things about the missing woman.

Newman says McCoy's oldest daughter described her mom as a survivalist and a "doomsday prepper". She also told authorities she wasn't concerned because it was not unusual for McCoy to leave for months at a time without talking to anyone.

"She told us that she might be somewhere on an archaeological dig, or she might be out of state," said Sheriff Newman. "With the stories that the family was telling, it didn't seem odd because she had done this on several occasions."

After almost a year passed by with no sign of McCoy, Newman realized they needed to launch a formal investigation.

Chesnut said she never talked about her family much, but knew she didn't have a great relationship with her oldest daughter.

"Through the years, Kay would rarely mention her oldest daughter because they fought all the time. Her daughter would run away all the time," Chesnut said.

It turns out, 40-year-old Kristina Hicks may have a role in her mother's vanishing.

On Monday, a Jasper County grand jury indicted Robert and Kristina Hicks for abusing McCoy's credit cards and checks. They are charged with credit card abuse and forgery.

Chesnut says the news is a huge break in finding her friend.

"I'm glad that they finally indicted them, the oldest daughter and the son-in-law. Now, I hope we can go find her body and bring her home and put her to rest," Chesnut said.

The question of what happened to Kay McCoy still remains.

Chesnut hopes more answers will surface following the indictments.

Details of Disappearance
McCoy lived with her daughter and son-in-law on Farm to Market Road 1747 in Jasper, Texas at the time of her disappearance. They stated they last saw her sometime in May 2012.

The search for McCoy began in October 2013. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services called the police because they were concerned about her mentally disabled daughter. A short time later, her bank reported there had been no activity on her account in over a year.

When authorities checked her daughter and son-in-law's residence, none of the vehicles were missing. She had been receiving Social Security checks at the time of her disappearance, and they were deposited into her bank account, but the money was never accessed and eventually the benefits stopped because they were going unclaimed.

McCoy's oldest daughter described her mother as a "survivalist" and "doomsday prepper." Her children they had a strained relationship with McCoy and that it wasn't uncharacteristic of her to disappear for months without telling anyone, which is why they didn't report her disappearance. Her daughter and son-in-law said the last time they saw her, she wrote out a list of things to pack; the list indicated she was going to Kansas.

In July 2019, Robert Louis Hicks and Kristina Marie Hicks were indicated for credit/debit card abuse and forgery of a financial instrument. They are accused of cashing checks on McCoy's account in August and September 2012, several months after her disappearance. Investigators stated they were also persons of interest in her disappearance as well. Photos of Robert and Kristina are posted with this case summary.

McCoy's disappearance remains under investigation and the circumstances of her case are unclear.

I just caught the Cold Justice episode about this as I ride out some bad weather with late night tv. After the sketchy explanations about the bank card and checks I can’t believe they haven’t dug up more on this.
