Texas Teen Killed in Broad Daylight While Walking Home With Friend

A 13-year-old girl in Texas was killed and her friend was seriously injured when they were shot while walking home on Friday afternoon.
News Channel 6 reports that Lauren Landavazo and Makayla Smith, both 13, were shot on Friday at 3 p.m. while walking home from One McNeil Middle School in the small town of Wichita Falls.

Lott set to have trial scheduled

With no plea deals offered, a 21-year-old man accused of murdering one Wichita Falls teen and shooting a second teen is expected to go to trial.

Lott found incompetent to stand trial in Kingston Drive murder, shooting

The mental health expert found Lott was "presently incompetent to stand trial," in her report, which was filed with the court on March 8, according to a judgment filed late Friday afternoon.

In the judgment of incompetency, the court ordered that Lott be committed "to a maximum security unit of any facility designated by the Department of State Health Services or North Texas State Hospital (Vernon Campus)."

He is to be transferred by Wichita County Sheriff's deputies to the facility "for a period not to exceed 120 days for further examination and treatment toward the specific objective of attaining competency to stand trial."

Documents: Kody Lott to pursue insanity defense at trial for murder of Lauren Landavazo

According to the notice filed by Lott's attorney, James Rasmussen, the "Defendant and the undersigned Counsel for Defendant have reason to believe that the Defendant was insane at the time of the commission of the offense alleged in the instant indictment."

The trial is expected to begin on Sept. 10, 2018 in Tarrant County, according to a letter filed by 30th District Judge Robert Brotherton on June 22.

According to court filings, Lott's next jury pre-trial conference is set for 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 10 in the 30th District Court.

Wichita County judge rules in favor to have own expert examine mental health of suspected murderer

On Tuesday, Judge Brotherton signed a motion allowing a prosecution expert to examine Lott at the Wichita County jail without the prosecution or Lott's attorney present.

Lott is scheduled to have a pre-trial hearing on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

At this time Lott's trial is tentatively set to start on Sept. 10 in Tarrant County.

FORT WORTH – Jurors in the Kody Lott murder trial spent Friday morning viewing graphic autopsy photos of the bullet-ridden body of a 13-year-old girl shot to death Sept. 2, 2016, in a Wichita Falls alleyway.

Dr. Emily Ogden, a medical examiner, testified three of the more than 10 bullet wounds that Lauren Landavazo suffered were fatal injuries.

The seven-man, five-woman jury also saw grim photos of apparently blood-stained clothing and jewelry, and bullet fragments believed to have hair and blood on them – a surprise discovery Thursday evening.
